1954 chevy panel truck
Jantrix replied to mnwildpunk's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Doing research on what has been done with 1:1's would be a good idea. -
Oh man that is all 31 flavors of cool. I have seen that suspension in 1:1 and always wondered how well it works. It looks very cool though. Well done.

Looking good Bryan.

General suggestion when showing your models.....
Jantrix replied to cruz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Know any girls? Besides I go into beauty supply stores for nail polish and sanding sticks all the time. No reason to be shy about a make up brush. -
Man, I gotta get back on this. I've been on 2nd and 3rd shift for a while now and even on my days off I'm just so whipped I don't feel like building. I'll get the interior of the '49 done soon so that even if I have to show up on race day in primer, I can at least be able to.

If it doesn't draw blood, is it really yours?
Jantrix replied to Harold's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah I've always joked that giving a project a little blood is good luck. I laid the pad of my thumb open with a new hobby blade, from stem to stern back when was 19. An astonishing amount of blood on that one. Aside from that no major mishaps. -
That is just perfect. Very authentic and nice work on the top.

I just ask them to Pay It Forward
Jantrix replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have received parts for free from folks that seem to have no immediate needs. Honestly I'm always thankful to have the part but I'm not real comfortable with that arrangement. I'm a very pay-my-way kinda guy and I'd much rather do a straight up trade. And I have given parts away to folks I know here and in my model club that I know pretty well if only by reputation (the Good Trader thread for instance). Because I know they would or have done the same for somebody else. I won't do this for someone I do not know. It's gotta be a trade. Call me selfish if you want. -

Another point I'd like to mention is before you take any shots of a build, WIP or complete, is dust the darned thing off. Use a clean make-up brush and give it a quick dusting. -

Suggestions on painting an interior tub?
Jantrix replied to foxbat426's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Most of the time only the very bottom of a interior tub is visible through the chassis and maybe part of the firewall. So I would paint the interior as you need it and then when its all done, mask off and spray the bottom to match the chassis. -
Tastes change ...... ?
Jantrix replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the input guys. It's nice to see I'm not alone. -
I've always loved hot rods. When I was younger I loved the modern rods, the billet rods as they are called these days. Old cars with modern power plants, suspension, wheels/tires and every modern convenience. Traditional rods were just ...................... old fashioned. Yet for some reason over the last five years or so my tastes have changed. So far in fact as to do a complete 180 degree turn. I get kind of disgusted when I see a billet rod now and I'm spending time taking models kitted in such ways and striving to return them to a more traditional style. Rat rods and weathered rods particularly were distasteful. I thought rather vehemently back then that building something purposely to look bad was just stupid. Especially in model form. I had a rather excellent discussion about this idea back on the old SA forum. Now I find them very artistic and aesthetically pleasing. I've built several. I'm not a band wagon jumper, far from it. I know that rad rods are very popular lately and traditional rods are making a big comeback. I truly cannot account for my tastes in hot rodding in general to do such a drastic swing. Could it be that because I'm getting older (44 this past June) I'm seeing more value in things that are old? Or that I'm appreciating the talent and craftsmanship in keeping the old things running more than just replacing them with something off the shelf? Probably both. Has anyone else had such a swing in tastes? Maybe in the opposite way? Lets face it modern suspensions, power brakes and steering are a lot easier on old bones.

proper way to blackwash chrome grill
Jantrix replied to foxbat426's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Gloss acrylics work well too. Let dry fully and then wipe with a wet cloth. Less hazardous to the chrome than the enamels. -

Looking forward to this John. Doing a bare metal rod has been on my to do list for a while. -

This looks sweet. Man I'd love to find some of those decals. -
Wow. That looks wonderfully authentic. Easily the best '56 I've seen built up. I have a can of that paint and you've given me something to look forward to when I paint my '49.

Source for Alan Root Boss heads
Jantrix replied to Fat Brian's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Yeah unless its a vintage part which might have Edelbrock or Morosso on it, you aren't going to find much. Even Ross Gibson would have to get permission to cast parts like that, which is doubtful. Your best bet is to find a valve cover that is close and then add a decal for the BOSS 429. -
Well said Bob. We have turned into a very disposable society and the fact that nothing is built to last anymore is the reason for that. Nearly nothing that is manufactured today is meant to be repaired. Remember when we'd take the TV to the repairman or he'd come to the house? Now it goes out to the curb and we're on our way to Best Buy. Cars are the same way now. I've yet to have a car hit 150k miles since my 75 Olds.

Very cool project. Looking forward to it.

1954 chevy panel truck
Jantrix replied to mnwildpunk's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Looking at the pic it also looks like the hood is too long? Is that correct or is it just a gap on the side? I would get some sheet styrene and fill the cowl holes with that. Filling the whole gap with putty is asking for trouble down the line. If your gap on the side is your only issue, use some very thin sheet styrene and add plastic strips down the length of the hood edge. I like using Tenax or Plastruct liquid glues for this because it isn't adding any material to the fix, merely welding the plastic and then evaporating. Keep adding styrene until the hood is now too wide for the opening then slowly sand away the added styrene until it fits properly. I just did this recently for the optional hood on the AMT 49 Ford. It worked like a champ. -
Nice work Chuck. I've alwasy had a soft spot for this kit and that looks very authentic.

Very cool Chuck, I'm looking forward to this.
