death race car build off (official WIP page)
Jantrix replied to diymirage's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Update shots on the Spartan. Exo-cage is finally done, first primer. The weapons platform is simple and part of the exo-cage. The idea was to make a cage that looks like it is attached and basicly an extension of the body/chassis of the car. Weapons will be started next. Enjoy. More shots here. http://s53.photobucket.com/albums/g73/Jant...athrace%20300C/ -
The best way to take the guess-work out of pic size on Photobucket is to automaticly resize the photo to about 640x480 AT UPLOAD. That way all your model pics are the right size and are forum-friendly. If you look at your upload device on your Photobucket page the reduce option is right below it. Hope I helped.

Hey guys could we perhaps do a little creative editing when we quote folks we want to reply to? Just delete the photo URLS in the quote so that we don't have to swim though tons of duplicate photos. Or just leave one pic if you want to remark about a particular feature of the build. In any case, after a stop at the Evergreen/Plastruct/Aluminum tubing display at my LHS, I've done quite a bit of work on the Spartan. The exo-cage is just about complete. The weapons mount is just about ready. The mount and the car will have to be primed seperately to make sure everything gets covered completely as I'm using lacquers. When I add up the actual weight of all this steel in my head, if this were 1:1, I realize how far behind I'm leaving reality. But what the hell, this is set in some screwed up future anyway right. The only thing I have overlooked is that I should have distressed the body before I built the exo-cage. It will be more difficult to do now, but I'll get by. I'll get some pics up when it's ready for primer. -

Well we haven't SEEN any Caddy yet, real or imagined. All we've got so far is a lot of talk and a silly name. -
As for models it's cars or nothin'. My other addiction is an online video game called City of Heroes, which I love as I'm a closet comic book fanatic. My wife and two sons also play, so it's a family thing too. I used to collect comics until I bought my 1700 sq. foot home and realized that I would not have room for an extended collection.

Everyones work looks fantastic! No progress on mine quite yet, been busy with life and hurricanes and such. I need a couple things at the LHS. I'll try and get back on the stick this weekend. -
My Best "Bud's" in building.
Jantrix replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My best friends in the hobby? First would be my wife who supports it, and gives me honest opinions with interest. Second would be my local hobby shop owner, Brian. Who is always ready, willing and able to get me what I need. And lastly would be my friends on this forum and on two or three other forums. Before the internet, modeling was mostly a solo gig with occasional meetings with like minded folks. Now it is a very social hobby that I appreciate very much. -

Updated pic. Sort of fleshing out the external roll cage. Weapons are still a ways off right now. I'm planning two horizontal side bars, and extra armor will be mounted there. Two roll bars will go over the rear potion of the roof and weapons will be mounted on those. I'l planning a .50 cal and a quad RPG rig. Oil, smoke and grenade deployment from the rear. Paint will be metallic gold with metallic red graphics. If you can't quite understand what I'm shooting for, think of Ric Flair (wrestler- Google it) as a deathracer, and you might get the idea. The car will be damaged here and there and look a bit road weary, but it's nothing more gold paint won't fix. -

Um...................nope looks right on to me. Lets face it, if there was ever a build off that SHOULD be over the top and taken to far, THIS IS IT! -
Grats on the kit! I build a couple Hubley kits "back in the day", and I can't tell you how much I hate metal kits. Looking forward to seeing this one come to life.

This was built for my Gunslinger build. The main body is two monster truck fuel cells sandwiched together. I added some sheet styrene and tubing. If I can build this anyone can. -

Nick just a thought, as this is a Deathrace and not a WW3 build off, a semi is probably not gonna keep up with the rest of the racers. You might want to break out some old junk kits and get creative. And of course your welcome to join the field. -
This one was TOOOOOO easy harry, you're slipping.

Said the Egg Man. Why not join us Harry? Come down to our level and come play in the sandbox with the kids for a change. -

Swivel mounted weaponry? Um.......................no. In my ultra-humble and well thought out opinion, to keep with the "spirit" of Deathrace, I'm not gonna be doing that. In Deathrace there is a driver and a navigator. There's no room for a gunner, and neither driver nor navigator would have the time to devote to turning the weapons and aiming them while doing their primary job. It's up to the driver to train the hardmounted weapons on the opponent in front, and navigator to deploy aft defenses. But maybe I'm thinking too much into this. But that's what I do. -

I don't think they have yet to come up with bullet proof glass that'll stop a .50 cal. Considering it'll punch through an engine block. -

I just returned from seeing Deathrace. If your not looking for Oscar winning performances, and are into general extreme gratuitous violence (like me), and plenty of automotive mayhem you will enjoy this film. This all looked like real cars, doing real stunts with real explosions. A very old school action movie. None of that George Lucas-esque CGI everything films. A very cool note. Roger Corman- executive producer. Another cool actor is Ian McShane who played Al Swearengen in the HBO series Deadwood, which I loved. Last thought- I saw the trailer for Fast and Furious 4, starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. The 69 Charger is back! EDIT: Here's a couple in progress shots. Oh, and Diymirage, although I will be adding a Michigan licence plate (for kicks), it will be metallic gold. -
Paint Strippers - What to Use?
Jantrix replied to pbj59's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
A note on the Super Clean/ Purple Power prodcucts. It is lye based, avoid contact with skin and eye protection a must. Works great on enamels. For lacquers, sand through to the primer in a few spots, to let the chemical attack the primer. The lacquer will just slough off after the primer is disolved. Unless the purple stuff is BRAND new, it seems to have trouble with lacquer paints. -

Man, I love building models like this, very creative, and very forgiving. Too much glue? Screw it, add more dirt! I have finally come up with a name for my little creation. Thinking of the shields, armor and weapons, and the fact that this is a "300", what could be more perfect than...... the SPARTAN! The seams are all welded for increased structural integrity. The only opening is the drivers door which has been halved and gullwinged. I've decided to addd an external roll cage like the old safari jeeps. Weapons will be mounted to that. Well back to work. All WIP pics will be here. http://s53.photobucket.com/albums/g73/Jant...athrace%20300C/ -

Man, you say that like it's a bad thing! Yay for the wife, give her a hug from us! I have seen the Dukes 69 at Michaels recently. -
Well she is sitting off shore right now, gaining strength again. She'll be headed towards Jax soon. I'm at work right now, so I hope she holds off till dawn because they will close the bridges and I'll be screwed. We've gotten loads of rain, which has really given my new drainage system for the front yard the acid test. So far so good.

Looks fantastic, nice work.

Guys, I'm going to take mine a little bit more from the original Deathrace 2000 I'm thinking. The dull industrial black/steel/iron look just isn't that attention grabbing. The idea behind Deathrace is that it is a televised organized sport. We as Americans don't care for bland entertainment, even if we enjoy the actual sport. Which is why our racing teams are all brightly or strikingly colored, our Football jerseys are more eye catching, and our professional athletes/wrestlers/fighters- over the top bold. So I figure that although the cars will look a bit road-weary, they would be bold and eyecatching, thus easier to see your favorite driver. Perhaps even wearing sponsorship logo's. Lets face it, a society screwed up enough to embrace Deathrace, would definitely do that kinda thing. NASCAR WITH A BODY COUNT! So my entry will have the same armor and weapons, it will just look more organized, more thought out. And it will be sporting some eyecatching paint. If it ever stops raining. Or it could be that I'm just thinking too much into all this. But hey that's the kind of guy I am. Looking forward to starting on Friday.
