Hmm. I retract my previous statement. They are all fine work, but just not your work. That's probably enough for Gregg to give this guy the ol' heave ho. This guy is just some kid stirring up trouble. -
Very George Trosley-esque. Nice job. Car-toony!

Well Gomez if those are your builds then you do fine work. But if you come off like a complete jerk, no one will bother to read your posts, so no one will see them. Go back to LiL with your hommies and do you trash talkin' there. -
Umm.........no. But that's my malfunction not yours. As artists I know that you gotta build what trips your trigger and screw anyone who says "nay". Referenceing your PM, I don't really care for Picasso or Dali (except for Dali's Shades of Night Decending that one grabs me for some reason) much either. So it's just me. So you keep building what you love, and I'll keep liking about 95% of it. Thank you for the compliment on my work. Like you, I build a bit differently and build what turns me on, so in that respect, we meet in the middle.

Dave you got a PM

RDean, that looks great! And you have made my day. I built this 40 about 20 years ago and painted it Pactra Lightning Purple. I have been looking for that color again ever since. And your Purple-licious looks exactly like it. Is that from the Testors lacquer line?

I said model, but to tell the truth it doesn't look like either. It looks like a computer design. The pic quality is bad and that makes it tough. It's a toss up.

Hey guys. Here are the first shots of my Monza Cannonball racer that I did for a CBP. It is based on a really lousy Revell kit from the 70's. It is soooo bad, I know for a fact they used the same chassis and interior for their Mustang II racer. However the body is passable. The chassis is a heavily modified Nascar chassis with a Nascar SBC with a Corvette TPI intake. Ferrari wheels and tires. The paint is Duplicolor Orange Mist. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. There are more WIP shots here. http://s53.photobucket.com/albums/g73/Jant...haos%20special/

What is Sacred is, uh, Sacred
Jantrix replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
At our local IPMS shows all parents are warned that if they fail to control their children or themselves while in the contest room they will be asked to leave. I saw two families escorted to the door by our senior members that day. I was very proud of them. It seems kids have a hard time at the car and sci-fi tables especially. As for my club, they ask all builders (prior to judging) to set their model in a way they wish it judged. This way they don't need to touch the model at all. This way if they want a hood or door opened to better view it's contents, they can do so before the judges come around. -
Advise on starting em young
Jantrix replied to Pete J.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think we all did something similar as teens. My Dad started me on cars, because thats what he was into as a kid. I also tried planes, helicopters and everything else. I had Frankenstein and Wolfman with glowing hands on my dresser. But I eventually came back to cars and been here ever since and will always be. My oldest is the only one of my two sons that is a builder. Like my Dad, I started him on cars. but he's trying new stuff now too. He's got a helicopter kit and is sweating those teenie little parts . However it's tough to compete against the lure of 24hr cartoon/anime/manga television. He builds like a madman when he's grounded, but hardly touches them otherwise. -
Rommel's Rod
Jantrix replied to The Creative Explorer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My LHS owner showed me the new Revell catalog with big glossy pics of the Rommels Rod and Tijuana Taxi, as to gauge my interest. After seeing my face, he said, "I'll have to get a bunch of those." -
Bob Paeth Treasures from Sale
Jantrix replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sorry gotta ask. Did his family sell all of his completed builds or just the unopened and opened/started kits? I'm glad you were able to get something. It looks like a fun build. A mid-engined pick-up. Thats different alright. -
Having Paint issues, need some advice...
Jantrix replied to LVZ2881's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I've tried spot painting. I was never happy with the results. I always strip it. I use Super Clean or Purple Power. Tamiya is a bit harder to strip, but if you sand through to the primer in two or three spots it will give the stripper a chance to eat at the primer and the paint will slough off like a snake skin. The chemical will eat at filler also, but I doubt it would hard epoxy. Then repaint. But it's your call whatever you do. Tamiya gasses out usually in a few days max, so as long as you use only what tape is absolutely necessary, you should be successful next time. -

I think the problem isn't the tape or the paint, but the fact that you are using tape on the paint. There is no need to cover the whole car in tape. Just wrap the area to be protected in newspaper and tape it closed. Masking tape should only be touching where you want the paint division to be. Leave the tape and masking on for only as long as it takes for the paint to tack up, 15-20 minutes max. Then pull the tape away carefully and very slowly at a 90 degree angle from the line of the paint division. Also make sure your base color has fully cured and gassed out. If you can still smell the paint, it's not cured. -
Weathering and Rusting with Acrylics!
Jantrix replied to RyanSilva's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Here's my Cherry 2000 Mustang chassis, that I did using Ryans acrylic mehtods. I also incorporated a bit of liquid mask and the sea salt technique. It is very easy to do and the results had my Dad's jaw on the floor. The base was red primer. Then I roughly brushed on three "rust" colored acrylics in a random pattern over the chassis and in some key locations I wanted rusty. Them I applied some liquid mask and sea salt stuck with a bit of tap water. After all was dried I sprayed Krylon Semi-gloss black. After that was dried I knocked off the sea salt and pulled up the liquid mask. Then I wiped down everything with rubbing alcohol through the black, to taper the edges of the spots from the liquid mask and salt and to thin the black down to the rust. After a few washes and some desert dust, she'll be done. -
Wow. Thats some serious bad news pardner. I would try Tenax then. http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tnx/tnx101.htm?source=froogle I haven't used it but as I understand it sort of welds the plastic together, and is non-CA based. It would probably be easy to obtain a peek at an MSDS from the manufacturer Hebco. I know tons of modelers that absolutely swear by this stuff. I buy this stuff for the kids to use, it does pretty well also. http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tes/tes3507c.htm EDIT- Oh ###### I just re-read the title- non-styrene media. I'm sorry. I don't have an idea for you then.

death race car build off (official WIP page)
Jantrix replied to diymirage's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Kasteer don't sweat the small stuff. Like most of us here I was off like a gun when we started this, then as I progressed I started remembering the other four builds in the works. Some of which with CBP deadlines approaching so the Spartan took a back seat. However I have one build at the 95% mark and as soon as I finish it, I'll be down to just two WIP's and I'll be back at the deathraces. -
I like the wire mesh behind the grill. How about blacking that out or painting body color to make the grill stand out more? Also I recently wet sanded, polished, ansd waxed for the first time. Talk about a nerve wracking experience. I was terrified of sanding through a great paint job. In any case, you mentioned that you do this before you lay foil. BMF is hard enough to get to stick, is it harder after polish and wax? I usually clear over my foil and then sand, polish and wax. Both the Merc and the beat lowrider are looking great.

Heeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyy. You been peekin' in my windows Pat? There's a mighty odd resemblance goin on here. Seriously though, thats a great looking build. That Revell kit is real nice. Mine is the old AMT kit, with the decals from the Revell 67 which I parted out.
-
Ed, I assure you that photo does not nearly display the level of awfulness that the teal paint job was.
-
Thanks guys. It was nice to see this sows ear turn into a silk purse, after years of frowning at it on my shelf.
-
Greetings. This is AMT's 67 Chevelle I'd done around 1998 on the kitchen counter. The original color was Boyd's Teal Green, which came out bad. The rest of the car was rather well done if I do say so, so I decided a new paint job was in order. The new colors are Duplicolor Cherry Red Metallic and Bright White. The decals are from the Revell California Wheels 67 Chevelle. This was also my first shot at wet sanding the final paint for polishing and waxing. That is a nerve wracking job. The paint came out so well I was terrified I'd burn through so I was real careful. The gloss is not eye searing but it has a nice shine that looks in scale. Here's some before and afters. Thanks for looking.

death race car build off (official WIP page)
Jantrix replied to diymirage's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Is anyone still working on this? Interest seems to have dropped off. I'm still working on the weapons for the Spartan. I hope to have paint down soon. I've also come up with a plan for replicating fresh bullet dings. Could be interesting.
