TAT L-700 & Tanker
Spruslayer replied to Spruslayer's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Jim,you way to kind, and thanks to everyone for the encouragement to keep moving on even when i feel seconds away from turning a kit into tiny shards of broken plastic If i may throw a little rookie rant in this not specifically about this kit only but about the kits i have built in the16 months i have been back into it. A little background first,in my glory days i was a handle crank-in machinist schooled the old way before CNC took over.I did some injection mold work so i have a kinda fogy idea what if any flaws in the mold should slide by and which defects get fixed.Concerning the L-700,how in the world can someone let a design like the front spindles on the tractor fly,the other option that could cover this is that the mold is so old and wore out that when it was new all the parts fit and worked properly, but i dont think that is the case here.Another one that gets me as you really dont get exactly what you see on the box cover. The one that was the worst of this offence was the masterbox pinup girl, the one posing on a jeep hood.Yes,you get a girl figure in a sitting pose but in a totally different look. The cover photo of the L-700 Shell tanker did not have the cab side mount turn singles on it and to me,not to be to critical, the model used for the box top is not very well done. Not saying i could do better but i know i have seen many here that would do a far better job. Theres more but im starting to boar myself But ya know i did enjoy the challenge to turn the L-700 into a somewhat presentable form and i have amassed a small stash to keep me finding suprises for a long time to come Fair well for now and Model on -
TAT L-700 7-8 trailer done
Spruslayer replied to Spruslayer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
The trailer is done.Adding the extra 1.22 " wasn't as bad as i thought it would be but i ran into trouble when i tried to use 2 different brands of paint that did not play well together. So cheers to this one More pics in the under glass -
I have reached the the end of this glue bomb disaster and my figurative rope on this one. Unless im a complete ID10T there is no way to build the tanker trailer in the short bed version straight out of the box.I put it at 20 scale feet by adding 1.22" in length. Allthough i do love the Dodge l-700 i wouldn't recommend this kit unless you are willing to spend all the extra time involved in fixing many flaws in this kit, most notable is the tractor front wheel spindles, and then there was the cab hinge, fixing the ride height of the tractor,i could go on but im sure most of you know all to well about this kit. So,without further adu My TAT Dodge L-700 and tanker trailer

best way to wash before build
Spruslayer replied to bubbaman's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I use a utlrasonic cleaner,a 2.1 quart cap Super clean mixed with water and the parts come out squeaky clean. The down side is the cost of a quality unit thats big enough for bodys and other large parts. Paint brushes, 60 seconds and clean as new.Airbrush and my HVLP gun i can clean in about 5 minuets,no more removing the Ab nozzel and risk damage or losing it. For scuffing the parts in preparation for paint on part that i dont want to sand away the fine details i use a air eraser. Im currently working on the Amelia Earhart Electra that has tones of raised rivets and the air eraser abrades the surface like it was sanded but leaves the raised details. Model on! -
Forgive me but i havent read the entire thread but as far as cleaning a airbrush or even a small HVLP gun, a ultrasonic cleaner and a gallon of Super Clean is all you need Between changing colors in my Neo,i run a little water through first to get to bulk of the paint out, then to the UC and i just hold the gun just so the paint bowl in under water and give it 2 minuets,it comes out like you did a complete disassemble and clean. I do sometimes take it apart and turn the heater on for a through cleaning. I only use water base paints in the AB,anything else gose outside to the shop HVLP Heres the one i have $90 is not cheap in my veiw but i also use it for other household task too, cleaning the LOML's jewels, glasses and much more.................... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GA1I3M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Model on

My store put the clearance out today.I was wanting the Thunderbolt ford but it was not marked down I did leave with 4 kits though
-
Thanks for pointing that out Joseph,i got so worked up over trying to make it sit like the box art that did not even cross my mind.Either i couldent figure out how to put the supercharger on the engine or The one that came with the kit was such a fail i did'nt use it.Plus i need to go back to school and learn the the class designations. Overall i liked the kit but there was several pieces that were just poorly made The good part is that when i build i dont use glue if the parts stay together so swapping moters in this wont be too bad

Thanks guys!

counterfeit products
Spruslayer replied to Spruslayer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I do love your box art Greg Ill list the ones i have #1 76 Gremlin, this one is in a box that is larger than the rest and the print inside is also larger the the other 11 #2 Gene Winfields 40 ford sedan delivery #3 Opal GT #4 40 Ford Coupe #5 73 Mustang Warren tope's #6 70 Impala Heavy Chevy #7 Piranha spy car #8 Pontiac Grand Slam #9 29 Mod Rod #10 Flying Wedge #11 Monza 2+2 #12 59 Elcamino Ellen,i still not so sure this isent just poor QC on the manufactures end I emailed R2 asking for a replacement so ill see how that goes So, back the the bench -
Great Saturday afternoon Modelers. In one of my uncontrolled buying sprees i sourced out all 12 of the Amt Original Art Series kits. As you probably know the kit includes a art print of the box cover with the print on one side and the series number and kit name on back Today i received the last 4 in the mail and upon opening #4,the 40 ford in orange, the print was blank on the back side and the paper quality looked different from the other 11 So i guess my question is,are counterfeit models a problem here in the states? The other obsession i was into before modeling was guitars and fake guitars are an enormous issue, even parts and some of the ligit imports. I bought this kit from what i considered a safe online super store as models go I do plan on contacting Round 2 about a replacement print

No clearance models at my HL I think i will take the lead from some of the other folks here and try to befriend one of the HL employs and mine for pricing info I did score the coffee table book Muscle cars American icons by auto editors of consumer guide at Sams and the Revell 64 SS Chevy at Mejeirs on clearance.

Here is one that is 99 %.I lost the gas tank cap and one of the stock headlights so in went the headlight covers. The kit supplied radiator hose was a complete fail!It looked like a badly formed piece of spru. And i need to add a coil.then there was trying to get the box art stance and look Doing it by the instructions dident look right, low in the front and high in the back with the rear tires sticking out from the body

Thank you for the resource Steve.Silver it will be.The interior pics are nice,i was needing a guide for what to do behind the seat
-
I like the ruby? color of the current version but i haven't seen it in silver I would like to be sorta historically accurate so i may go with silver This is one of those car that make you wonder why dident someone do this in a kit,

TAT L-700 7-8 trailer done
Spruslayer replied to Spruslayer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
The trailer with this rig is as big a mess as the truck was I wanted a short bed as to not take up so much space, but after figuring out the single axle rig,no thanks to the instructions, looking at a mock up with the truck the trailer was way to short. So after a quick interweb search of earlier trailers i came upon a site with a pic of a single axle tanker that looked similer to this one, even better the pic was scaled with diminisions.Acording to the pic the tanker trailer was 20 feet long,9.6 in 1/25 scale inches. The short bed included in the kit was 1.225 short so im grafting on the extra length -
love the headlight awsome work

TAT L-700 7-8 trailer done
Spruslayer replied to Spruslayer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
After much trials a tribulations may i present My L-700 TAT Truck Some parts i dident use such as the antenna, which when measured would be about 1.5 dia,way to big and a tool box that was to go on the outside frame just would not fit right so away it went. Also had to scratch the cab side mounter running lights as i lost both of them
