Comstock Ford GT40 MKI
Chinacar replied to Phildaupho's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
I'm watching closely. My first serious contact with the GT40 was in Geelong Australia when I had the luck of being the passenger in one in the Geelong Speed Trials in the early nineties. Love at first site. Last year I started working for Shelby and occasionally the legends around the GT 40 come up, especially with the movie a few years ago. In any case, good luck on this one you are doing beautiful work. -
The weather's been good so I was able to get some photography done in the last few days. I got this model last year shortly after I started to work for SHELBY AMERICAN. It's the Fujimi kit which has some short comings (like the too thick windshield frame). The exhaust was a bit fiddly to assemble with way too thick chrome so I stripped it and painted it flat white. Decals looked like they were a nightmare, so I skipped them. Paint is Mr Hobby / Mr Color Metallic blue, with Mr Hobby Super Clear Primer. In hind site the metallic flakes are probably too big for the scale, but I didn't want to strip and repaint. The rest of the kit is built box stock. Thanks for looking.

The weathering is spot on in this build! I aspire to be able to weather as goos as this. Beautiful build! -

The kit is not bad. It needs a bit of work in fit because so many things open, but detail is ok and there is a lot of reference to super detail. My next version will have more detail and more of the problems corrected than in this one. I have already bought a third kit as they are available for about $50, which is a great bargain for a kit like this. -
Exactly the same thing happened to me with these products. The Tamiya I find to be much glossier, but it's a decal destroyer.

Thank you! What I love about this site is that they have good people willing to share knowledge about the hobby...so last night while surfing around, I though my pictures really are not good and don't do the model justice. I went into the chat room Tips, Tricks and Tutorials giving tips on how to take good pictures and voila! Better shots. Hopefully I can improve this aspect of my modelling in the future too.

Thanks for the follow up! Seems like a handy thing to have, it saves a lot of time modifying kit parts. I still may build a Daytona version of the car but probably a different livery. I'm progressively getting better with each version. I'll have to post the pictures of my Denny Hulme winning black version as soon as I get it photographed. -
My first car was a 1970 MGB. I spent more time under it than in it. It suffered from electrical woes that I could never solve. I replaced a lot of the sheet metal as the mid-west winters had taken their toll. Despite all of the shortcomings I was a bit teary eyed when it was driven out of my parents driveway by its new owner. So here is my model tribute to my first car... The model is based on the Aoshima kit which really has excellent detail. The high points of this kit are the beautiful chrome wire wheels, photo etched details and a well proportioned accurate body. The downside is the lack of engine and that the body sits high in the rear. I tried using Tamiya enamel on the body for the first time and it went over the Modellers white primer nicely. I hid it under a dust free cover for a few days knowing enamel dries slowly and I ended up with a shiny finish and didn't need to clear coat. Tamiya polish and some Meguires wax to finish it off.

Thanks for your comment! I learned quite a bit about the shortcomings (door fit, plumbing) and positives (good proportion, accuracy of the body) of this kit. I'm well into the Denny Hulme Le Mans winner version, hopefully it will look much better. -

Thanks for your nice comments. Who makes the Daytona conversion? -
2024 24 hour build - Ridge Runner Pinto
Chinacar replied to Nacho Z's topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
Really nice paint finish and build! You've just proven my theory wrong that you should wait at least 24 hours to allow the paint to "gas-off" before applying decals...thanks for you post.- 21 replies

Some in progress and finished pictures of the Ken Miles - Llyod Ruby car. Modified right front fender made it higher for more wheel travel, deleted the Guerney bump on the top of the doors (the bump was invented later) and deleted the rear intake scoops. I made my own decals with Adobe Illustrator and printed them out on self adhesive vinyl. Other than that the Magnifier kit was built box stock.
