I'll eventually jump in with a Ford in a Chevy. Maybe a Vette.

Gloss vs Satin Clearcoats
rattle can man replied to Mike_C's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
perfect, high gloss is for show cars. in reality, Daily use will take away from that perfect shine Paint fades, oxidizes, and scratches, dulling the appearance. race cars, heavy equipment and commercial vehicles will be lucky to get a wash. so think about what your subject is What bothers me is overdoing polishing and weathering. Examples exist for both, but reality is somewhere in the middle. The majority of the time, minor scratches, texture/ orange peel, (I totally get that texture looks out of place if it isn't in scale and should be polished out) i and sometimes slightly mismatched paint (either from the factory or a repair) are common. Even two of the same color cars next to each other might be slightly different shades. -

F-150 mirror source

Thank you everyone. Wile looking through my stash for another build, I found that the SuperStones F-150 has the exact mirror and it doesn't look oversize like the ranger mirrors. As for the engine, I think I'll order a stock six from VCG and modify the kit V8 EFI to fit. I have to modify it to six runners instead of four and fab an intake manifold. The air filter housing and intake hoses are accurate enough for me. -

WHATS GOING ON HERE?
rattle can man replied to CaddyDaddy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I will stick to my $1000 work truck. '93 F-150, former county work truck. Nothing but AM/FM, inline six, 175K on it. Co-worker thought I was nuts buying it instead of his loaded Ram (towing package, lifted, power everything, etc). Why would I need that to haul compost, mulch, rock, etc.? If the gov't really want old, poorly maintained gross polluting vehicles off the road (don't crush well maintained cars), they need to encourage low priced vehicles. Cash for Clunkers failed because you have to be able to afford a loan for a newer vehicle and its maintenance before you buy a better one. -
Goodbye Hot Rod Magazine?

It is simple. investors wanting a quick buck, buy the company, cut budgets, and dumb everything down. then they close it because they lose readers. all the while most people don't want to learn from what they read and would rather buy something than build it. -
Can you identify this car ?

Is this common?
rattle can man replied to Earl Marischal's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not only can I drive a manual, I can shift left handed on a manual trans with a reverse shift pattern (reverse up and to the left, not down and to the right). I miss jolly ole England sometimes. Nothing beats a 5-3 downshift and hammering it in my Festiva (loud muffler, of course) and seeing people stare or try to catch up. -
Mexican Ford Trucks
rattle can man replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Okay after breaking out my kits it isn't as easy I thought. The van bodyis taller than the pickups, so it will need to be sectioned and maybe a top chop too, depending on how you slice it. Plus you will have work to do on trim and maybe the lower body sides. The SuperStones pickup is a long bed. The Phantom van roof would be too short in length. Either shortening the bed and Chassis or lengthening the roof would be needed AMT F-150 short box (early 90's ) would work perfect lengthwise, but the van roof looks to be too wide. Careful planning might be needed to narrow it and keep the ribs looking evenly spaced. Or rework the hood/ cowl/ windshield area. Revell Ford Ranger (kit 85-4360) looks like the most promising, but it is a 4x4 sport side. The cab is the right width, and the length of the chassis is very close. -

I like the concept, but the four door proportions seem off. After I finish my current builds and my F-150, I might try one. exterior looks like a roof and upper panels from an AMT Phantom van grafted to a Super Stones F-150 might be doable. -

some how I managed to post the same question twice. I was mistaken withe Texas 3d. They have Mopar slant sixes and GM in-lines. VCG is the one with 240/ 300 sixes listed. the stock is a 1 bbl carb. there are hotrod, performance, and vintage race versions as well. -

thank you both. I just realized I have that kit. If I find that 300/ 4.9 I will post the source. I know Texas 3D does have a 300 in several variations, but not the "late" EFI. -
I'm trying to replicate my truck, a '93 F-150, ex county work truck special. So I'm looking for a source for Ford Type 9 mirrors and a 300 six. I do know the mirrors were in the Revell Explorer, but were they in any other kits? photo of the mirrors attached. I know I've seen a 90's 300 six in factory trim somewhere (resin or 3d print) but can't remember who was selling them. Thanks for any help.

correct ID?
rattle can man replied to rattle can man's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thank you! I wonder where I picked up the Buick engine. Now if I can find the rest of the engine I can use it. -
I need to confirm my ID guesses on the following two things. The first I believe a body is from the Orange Crate or a derivative. The second pic I believe is a Buick nail head from AMT, but I don't recall what kit

These (or something similar) were in the Revell Hot Rod series edition of the Lil' John Butera Model T and '34 Roadster.
