The Jairus Watson Artwork Challenge
Ken replied to Fletch's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Cool, I have the thom taylor issue somewhere around here... Got start searching the stash. I will send up a flare if I get lost!!! -
Kind of interesting with the red roof. Interesting note and slight thread jack... My grandmother was a Mopar lady most of her life. The one car I remember her having way too much fun in for a grandmother was a 70/71 Plymouth Duster 340. It was silver with a red roof, bench seat and torqueflite. She used to dust mustangs in it all the time. Interesting thing about it, All her cars were silver with a red roof. Her Duster was one of those 'not available' cars that Mopar produced. I wanted it when she went to trade it in on a Buick, but she sold it to some kid down the street. He wrapped it around a tree within a year The Bees are looking sharp! Makes me want to build my Nana's car!

The Jairus Watson Artwork Challenge
Ken replied to Fletch's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think I may actually already have the kits to complete this. I need to get some of the other ###### off of the bench first. I will start looking tonight. Is the ZZ top 34 ford still available in some form? Opps, sorry for the 'bad' word -
Mine was a Boeing Stratotanker kit from AMT. Built with my dad's help in the painting and destroyed by my brother on a 'test flight' down the stairs. First car model that I remember was an IMC GT40. I keep trying to win one on the auction sites, buy they always end at more than I want to pay. I do have the monogram SSP issue, but it is not the same.

looking for Ferrari 512 help
Ken replied to Ken's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks guys, I spent something like 3 hours yesterday searching google images under different names and such. My eyes were bleeding by the time I gave up. Looks like these references will help tremendously. I appreciate the responses and the help. Okay, after bookmarking those sites and saving a bunch of the images, I am going with Tamiya titainium gold for the valve covers with black spark plug boots. Riddle solved -
Would soldering work?
Ken replied to Nick Winter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You can try, but I believe it won't work. Soldering is mainly for brass and copper only. You can weld aluminum, but that would kill any small scale work you are attempting. You could use brass for the parts rather than aluminum. Thick super glue is your best bet for aluminum. -
Okay, I am working on the testors boxing of the Ferrari 512s. After a few minor missteps... thanks Cal, I am starting the engine painting. The directions call for the valve covers to be black. Most of the pictures I have seen show them gold. I am leaning towards gold. Are there any good, complete reference guides on the internet? I have used google, but after hours of looking at different shots I cannot find a definite, reliable source. TIA

Oh yeah, when I was a kid, I had to walk to school barefoot in six feet of snow, uphill, both ways!!! Jeesh, you old guys sound like a monty python sketch "We lived in a hole in the road..."

Calling fellow Mopar enthusiast's
Ken replied to Nick Winter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the MPC/AMT 28 Model A Ford had the 413 in it as well. I know it has a Mopar big block as one of the engine options. I have the engine laying around somewhere. I believe that it is labeled a Ramcharger 413. -
Sorry for the 'zombification' of this thread, but I am building the exact same kit. I keep returning to this thread for inspiration and reference... like are the wheelie bars supposed to stick out at weird angles like they do?? I ended up bending the forward arms around the frame just a bit to make the fit a bit better. I have to agree with most of the 'other' comments as well. NASCAR, run whatcha brung!!!! If it is FWD in the real world, then it better be FWD on the track!!! Maybe we will see some innovation from the big 3! NHRA, again, if it don't look like the car it is supposed to be than it doesn't run. BRING BACK THE AERO WARS!!!!!!!! Anyrate, great job on the build! Harry, don't worry, I have red metalflake ready to go for the body

I like the idea, I would almost go with two sets of wheels in the back. It might give more of the 'light commercial' flair. Off to a great start!

So far, #4 has been my favorite. I think the reason that the last two movies have been good is the director. He is into the import tuning world. He knows the cars and gets that if they have to be 'right' The actors have to speak like they know what they are talking about. No more twin turbo supras that are clearly not and such. The writers and the director are car guys and get the whole thing. If they are back and stay with the project it should be good. Both decided to forget the first two movies were made when they started the third movie. Working so far, don't fix it!

That is the Tobacco King's Galaxie. I believe it went to auction last year. There was an article in a past issue of 'Garage' magazine on him and the car. Basic story is rich kid with a penchant for all things fast.

This car was brought up on another forum I frequent. I can't remember if it was JNC, Celicasupra or toyotacressida.net. Doesn't matter where... the point I was getting to was how they do that. Supposedly, they strip the car to bare metal. They then spray a light saltwater solution on it and let it sit overnight or longer. When they get the patina they are looking for, they clearcoat the car. Personally, I love that BMW and would do it in a heartbeat if I found a 318 or 328 cheap enough. You've got a good job on yours. Don't forget the roof rack or the mad camber

Yeah, I am loving this detail work. Nice and simple, stuff I could do Which is good, I have four of these in the stash... gotta love the clearance isle at Hobby Lobby. I have already written down the trick on the brakes.

I don't have this one, but I have two of the 'Shaguar' release, which I believe is based off this molding. I look forward to watching this thread. Good luck with the clean up.

I don't know about weird, but a found a name tag.... in the name of FAIL. Also weird for this part of the country They have never been on a car. 1st gen celica quarters, just sitting in a field!!! Well, actually more like an old abandoned junkyard, but still really strange for a part of the country that didn't always look nicely on imports

I too have used at least one tip learned here, the 'glue ghosting cure' I used it on a Polar Lights funny car I started last night. Worked great on the mold lines. They did not ghost at all when I painted the body this morning. Of course, I rushed the paint and Mr. Murphy reared up and bit me in the tush. The body crazied in a bunch of spots, but not where I had used the glue... Oh well, off to buy more 400 grit sandpaper and get to work sanding... Thanks for the tutorial Bill.

Got a 1:1 sitting at the shop. I will try to get some pics this week and post them on this thread. By the way, it is set up for an outboard, but the inboard V8 would be neat looking!

Now that DOH 'clone' is great. I believe that it was built for Kenny Wayne Shepard if I remember correctly. Super build and a nice twist on the DOH clone mentality. The black one ain't too shabby.

Make your ride in pixal art!
Ken replied to Jared Roach's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here you can see the individual pixels. You can also see how I went in and started re-coloring the car. You have to figure out your color palate first. Usually, you need your base and two or three shades either way. a couple lighter and a couple darker. Then just use the pencil tool and go to town. -
Make your ride in pixal art!
Ken replied to Jared Roach's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You open the png or whatever it is in any graphic program, ms paint, gimp, photoshop etc, etc, Then you change the color pixel by pixel. In MS paint, you would use the pencil tool and then zoom into the pic till you can see the individual pixels. Using the pencil you would then recolor each pixel till you changed the color of the car. You can even vary the shade of the color you are using to create bodylines, highlights, shadows... that kind of stuff. I have been trying it for a while, but nobody has done a decent template of either a 77 Celica liftback or a MkII Supra. Plenty of AE86s and Mk III and IV supras -
Where is Marc Nellis when you need him. I believe that this is MPC 71 Roadrunner. The when the kit originally came out in 71, the aero parts were included. If my memory serves me right, Mother MOPAR had a test/research 71 RoadRunner done up like this till NASCAR changed the rules and outlawed the aero wars. I don't believe the parts have been included in any of the reissues in a while. Get either the AMT Daytona for the needed parts(wing and such, most of the kit is horrible) and maybe a resin cast replacement part. The AMT 74 RR may help as well.

Flat hood for AMT 71 Charger
Ken replied to Ken's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, I looked at the superChargers on Ebay and most had a bulged hoods. I guess it is off to Time Machine for some resin pieces. -
Flat hood for AMT 71 Charger
Ken replied to Ken's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No, you are right it is a 73 Charger, but I figured that I could get away with using a 74 Charger kit if that was all that was available. I have a non-bumperete front from the AMT 71 that I could use.
