Flat hood for AMT 71 Charger
Ken replied to Ken's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, but in the novelization and occasionally in the show, the car is referred to as a 74. There are actually people that believe it is a 69???? -
Flat hood for AMT 71 Charger
Ken replied to Ken's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have been lurking, but between all the 1:1 projects and 'honey do' stuff, modeling time has been short. Trying to slowly get back into the bench. Hopefully, building something for the wife will be motivation enough. I am also building a Revell Challenger for her. She watches NCIS and has fallen in love with the new challenger. -
Hey all, I want to build a replica of the 'Burn Notice' 73/74 Charger. I have the AMT 71 Charger, which will be a great starting point, but it has the louvered hood. I need a flat hood and a 440 6 scoop. Somewhere, I have the Monogram 69 440 Bee, but it is 1/24 not 1/25 of the AMT kit. Is there a readily available 73/74 Charger or does someone in the aftermarket make a flat hood. I was planning on filling in the side strakes to make the body, but the hood has me stumped. Thanks guys

Raul, don't worry about us 'haters' Yours will be superb as always. The chassis alone is worth the price of the kit. It is a close replica, if not an exact replica of an Art Morrison chassis if my recall is still good. It also has a great set of airbags in it as well. I usually replace the wheels with the ones from the Phantom Vicky kit from AMT. I would almost think that if you laid the grill back a bit it would help trememdously as well. That grill just seems way to straight in comparison to the front fenders. I think your modifications to the headlights should help as well.
-
Man, talk about 'Zombie' threads!!! This one and the 914 thread reappear. Both worthy of reappearing as well. Nice job with both kits!!
-
I am the same way. I have 5 or 6 of these in the stash, but they only seem to get robbed for parts. Yours looks like a good start. Didn't somebody use one of these to make a Cord-esque wagon? Like others said, yours should be great!
-
Yup, it does. It is pretty decent too. I will effort some snaps of it tonight or this weekend and then start my thead so as to not clutter up this one.
-
I just bought this same kit last week. Trying to put it together as a suprise for the wife. Everytime she watches NCIS LA she talks about the car. I just have my engine painted and started. I will be watching this thread for some hints and tips. I didn't notice the rear of the hood sticking up. I will have to check mine when I get home. I also thought about doing the same thing with the mirrors. I am gonna have to start my own thread so we can compare.
-
Sweet! I almost bought an XMOD a while back. They were on sale for like 25$ or so. I may still grab one after seeing how yours turns out. I will watch this thread!!!

I know these aren't model cars...
Ken replied to Junkman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, this guy is featured in Fine Scale Modeling everytime he comes up with a new model. That is not to detract from the awsomeness of his work in any way. The man is a master modeler. -
We are gonna get hit hard!!!!
Ken replied to cruz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, we got hit hard last week. My mom called from Baltimore and lamented that they were going to get the storm as mostly rain rather than snow. This storm that is about to hit you gave us freezing fog and rain. I hear you guys are gonna get 15-30 inches of the stuff in some places. I need to call my mom and tell her not to wish too hard... -
I also discovered this one at the same time. I didn't take any pics last night, but decided to this morning. This is the second-second attempt at this. I didn't like the height of the top chop after a while and decided to start over. After seeing this one in pics, I prefer the first-second attempt. This one flows better in the tulip area, but the chop is too short. The front windshield would be about useless without major modifications to the roof line. This is also the one where I was stumped on the rear window treatment. In all, it would make a good show car, but not a street driven custom, which is what this project was intended to be. I may just paint the windows black on first-second and make it a slammer for now. Onto the pics. Here are the two side by side, you can see that the front chop is quite a bit lower than the rear chop Here is a straight on side shot of the second chop. I need to finish out the windows as that would lighten up the, at this point, heavy roof. This is the rear of the chop. I really like the way the top resolves into the tulip panel on this one. Again, I just don't know what to do with the rear window. At this angle, eventhough it is full size, it would be a mail slot to view through. Not very useable in real life. Of course, it is just a model. You can also see that I did not go as far with the body mods. The fenders are stock width. I did graft the fronts of a set of rear 40 ford fenders to get rid of the gasser wheel well look. This one will use the kit frame if I ever get around to finishing it. Hope these pics help with your project and give you some ideas.
-
Believe it or not, the rear fenders are sections of 40 ford fenders grafted onto the body. As far as yours goes, you might find the chop a bit easier to reconcile with the trunk if you cut out the sides of the top. You can see how I did it from the cut and glue lines on mine. Good luck with yours. I need to get restarted on mine.
-
Okay, after staring at the model room mess I remembered where the willys was. I dug it out and present it here for you... boy, that sounds horrible... Most of the mods are self-evident. The fenders were widened about 3 scale inches front and rear. The top is chopped about 3-4 scale inches and the section is about the same. it has been a while since the mods were done, so I don't remember the exact dimensions. The rear is pretty much done, it is the front end treatment that has had me stumped. Anyway, hope this help with some ideas for yours. Oh yeah, the frame is cut and the rear suspension mounts are flipped to the outside of the frame rails. The front suspension is stock from the kit. The rims and tires are from the AMT 32 phantom kit

What engine is in the Ala Kart
Ken replied to Madd Trucker's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Trucker, I meant no offense. When the 'new' tool came out, there was a huge amount of flack over the size of the enigine. I too think that it is an excellent kit. The chassis and rims have ended up under a bunch of projects ever since. I bought every single copy I saw on clearance. I have a bunch of the original issue kits as well. Someday, I will actually build an Ala Cart rather than rob them for parts -
Ask and you shall receive!!! I still haven't finished it. Chassis is intended to be the one from the 39 wagonrod kit... best parts kit ever!!!! Interior still needs a lot of work done to it, like starting it for one. Rear window treatment needs work as well. This is definitely a stalled project and has been sitting for well over three years or so. It is the second attempt. First attempt was done using the Revell SWC willys and the opening doors caused issues with the roof. Okay, it appears that I have deleted the photos from my photobucket account. I will take some more this evening and upload them tonight.

Isn't the engine in the Ala Cart undersized?? Sorry, couldn't help myself... -
Top Gear, the end is nigh?
Ken replied to HotRodaSaurus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I figured that they had to unmask the stig specifically because they wanted to test an FXX. Ferrari will only send them to the owner to use at a track. It would be simple for an enterprising reporter to figure out which FXX Ferrari shipped to England and then deduce who the stig was that was driving. Not to mention that Mercedes bought the Braun team and was reportedly in talks with Micheal about returning to F1. There is no way that he would be able to race and be the Stig at the same time. They did leave it up to speculation with the Stig's lap at the end of the show. Still, I watch for a lot of reasons. I love the british humor, even some of the cracks at America. It is shot very well. Being a photojournalist myself, I am facinated by the shots and the editing in the show. Some of the cars are half bad either. -
Top Gear, the end is nigh?
Ken replied to HotRodaSaurus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I really hope that the end is not near. It is a monday night ritual for the wife and I. One of few shows she and I both look forwar to, the other is Burn Notice. I do have to explain some it sometimes for her. Like she did not know who Micheal S. was, or why they would unmask him... rumor is they did it due to his return to F1. I just can't get enough of this show. The Botswanna episode and the Vietnam episodes are some of my favorite. -
Let see, Jordan, The Chevy truck is owned by the guy that owns the car lot across the street. It has some sort of family sentimental value and as such, he will not sell it. We have tried. Now, it is resigned to sit and decay till he realizes he is not going to do anything with it. Time will tell on that one. I believe that it is nothing special. JT, my first car was a 77 celica and I sold it. Starting searching for another one years ago. When I ran across these two, I couldn't pass them up. I have been sidetracked a couple of times, but I keep plugging away on it. I would also like to find a 71-74 coupe, but they have gone way up in price lately. Not to mention, most are on the left coast. Charlie... Funny you should mention WMUR in Manchester. I grew up in Merrimack, watching WMUR all the time. This Channel 9 is KWTV out of Oklahoma City. Believe it or not, I am the same way with most Japanese cars, gotta be old school for me to care about them. The cressida is an off-shoot of my foray into Celica Supras. My cressy is fully loaded, power everything, IFS, IRS, LSD, auto heat and AC, sunroof. Quite the luxuries for 1985. I expect to get another 100,000 miles out of her before even considering a rebuild. She cruises real nice right now and gets about 25 mpg, sometimes more. I do have a complete turbo setup out of an 87 Supra if I ever decide that she needs more zip! Of course, it may end up on the Supra... Dave, a Starlet... the guy I bought my celica from had three or four sitting out back of his shop as well. The Starlets have an underground 'cult' following just like the cressida. Unfortunately, more 'drifters' are discovering the cressida and cutting them up. Prices on clean, running examples like mine have begun to climb. I think that it is an age thing. While I missed the original muscle car craze, I still had a few. Most of the cool guys in my high school drove 240s, 510s, celicas etc. I think that is where it is coming from. Just like the generations before us, we now have the money to get the cars we couldn't growing up. Don't get me wrong, I would love to park a 71 340 'Cuda with billboards in the garage, but my JNC(Japanese Nostalgic Cars) do just fine.

Let see, first, Marc... A tuned Yaris S, isn't that an oxymoron? Nick, you are jealous of me and you have a 1st gen GTI??? Great Car man! Okay, here are mine Daily driver 1986 Toyota Cressida with stock 5M. Bought out of a guy's driveway for 200$ It is the proverbial 'little old lady' car. She only shows 173K on the clock. So far, Tokico Blues all the way around. Cut 1.5 coils in the front and 1 coil in the back, may go more. 5 speed swap planned, but not executed just yet. The only shot I have of my work truck, kind of. You can see it in the background of this shot. I was trying some flares on the cressida. Work truck is a 2004 4X4 Tahoe with big News9 stickers on it. Helpful in a lot of situations Project cars... 2 1983 Supras, one parts, one fixer. I haven't decided which is which just yet. Red one was free and needs an engine. White was was saved and needs a ton, but has a good, strong engine... Lastly, my pride and joy, a 1976 Celica GT liftback. I bought this one from the original owner. He had a ton of stuff, original paper tag, lien release, wiindow sticker, Weber carb, spare parts car... just a bunch of stuff for it. Right now, I am in the 'parts collecting' mode for it. I bought a 3rd GT for the black interior alone. It will be a long term project, but I hope to have it at least running before summer. On the road, hopefully by the end of the year. There is one more, that is not mine, but I am doing a lot of the work on it. My buddy stole this one off of craigslist for 200$ needs a fuel pump and that is it... The brother to my cressida, a 1986 wagon. I really want to buy this one from him and give it to the wife. She wants a wagon and this one has more style than most on the road right now. Of course, it would look realy cool dumped on some centerlines or Konig Rewinds...

Then you must, like me love 'Army of Darkness' and you gotta watch 'Burn Notice'... or is that a different Bruce Campbell.
-
It would appear that the AMT 62 Bel Air has these. They have the race hubs, but are not chrome plated. The ones in the 32 ford are chrome plated, but do not have the 'race' hub. I imagine that you could sand down the hub that is on the 32 examples if you need the rims in chrome. Otherwise, I would use the 62 Bel Air rims.
-
Doesn't the AMT 62 Bel Air have those? They are not chrome, but on the regular tree. I also believe that the Revell 32 Fords have them... Let me go check...
