  1. Yeah, the penny just dropped. DUH! Dupli-color is made for "metal" so has different properties than paint for plastic models. Gotta be an age thing, I didn't do the "why is this happening" analysis. I need to do the analysis thing on all paints except those made for plastics, Tamiya, Mr Color, AK etc. I had actually forgotten how much there is to learn, coming back to this hobby, paint, glue and so on. Thanks guys for turning on the light bulb. I bought a couple of cans of Dupli-color, because I liked the vibrant colors, at that stage not having considered the differences between the paints, plastic and automotive. Thanks guys. Don
  2. Thanks John. I'm at the take everything on board stage, and in for a lot of experimentation stage. Don Thanks Dave, I'm about to buy a new respirator, so I'll look into that one, thank you. Don
  3. Thanks Luke. The paint learning curve has started. I didn't know why the Dupli-color had that reaction, just thought I didn't put it down right. But yes, I will stick with your recommendation and stick with Tamiya for the time being, until I learn a lot more. Thanks Don
  4. Today I did my first spoon test. Tamiya, TS31, very good, but just a bit too orange for what I want, Dupi-color, Sting Red, not so good, (see pics). Tomorrow I should have my Tamiya TS49 bright red, so I'll see how that stacks up. Comments welcome. Don
  5. I have to try and do something like that for my'32, I knocked over a parts bowl and the exhaust extensions fell into the solvent thinner, bah first mistake, stupid mistake.
  6. Absolutely nothing, just tested a couple of paints - miserable failure. The red one with the crappy finish Dupli-color "sting red". Bad to start with, so I w&d 600/1000/5000, didn't improve a lot, the orange spoon is Tamiya TS31, straight form the can, one coat- very good, nice gloss finish, well for me. I will have Tamiya TS49 Bright Red tomorrow, so a further comparison, pretty sure I know what will win, Tamiya red or orange. Plwase let me know if you think I didn't get it right. Thanks Don
  7. Good one Les, I can't do 2am. ten is my deadline, after that I'm in zombie land
  8. Thanks Les, appreciate your help as you personally know the situation.
  9. Thanks mate, sorry to be a pain, you have better things to do than helping me. Yeah I have a mask, but just bought a better one, and I just bought a fan that I hope will blow a lot of the fumes away. With all that maybe my situation might improve.
  10. Yep, I looked at that earlier, and TS31 bright orange, hard to decide which is best. It's hard to tell with the samples on the websites, they give you two different colors, with the TS31, the color sample on the rattle can lid is closer than the sample they show. I think I'll get them both and do the spoon test and see which one I like/closest and go with that. With the trim, semi-gloss or flat? One more question and I'll get out of your face, painting small parts, fuel pumps, distributors, that sort of thing. I've used Tamiya satin, semi-gloss, etc, can't continue to do because of the fumes, even on those little bottles that are solvent based. I tried water-based acrylics that don't work so well, so do I have to primer them first, bit hard, because of a paint build up destroying the detail. How do you get around that? Airbrushing would use a hell of a lot of paint. Thanks for your patience mate, if you can help me here, I'll leave you alone until the next build. πŸ™„πŸ˜‚
  11. Been on different sites on the 'net, cannot find that color, can you give me the TS please.
  12. Really like that red, I can feel a change of mind coming up. It's sort of a orange red, I really like that, thanks. I ordered the TS85, but that can be for another day if I change my mind.................mmmmm. What code is that red?
  13. Donny

    69 Camaro

Great looking car, like it a lot. Don
  14. Can I use polycarbonate sprays on the exterior of a model?
  15. Just found Tamiya TS85 Ferrari Red, think that would look pretty special, if I can get it on right.
  16. I was thinking a deep red, maroonish color
  17. Thanks Luke, hope you're right, time will tell. Will be a bit before I get to it. Don
  18. Thanks Les, you mention "satin". The chassis and other parts, that's what Revell tells you to paint them for that kit. I'm not sure if it's me, but for satin it seems very shiny. I was expecting it to be not shiny sort of dull/matt. I think I might have used a bit too much paint. I am using Tamiya XF-1 as I couldn't find "satin". Thanks for the tips on the interior. I resized that, should have been a small file. Sorry about that.
  19. Sorry to hear that mate, it's a right PITA. The thing that sh*ts me off with it, is the things I can't do anymore, some of that is that according to my lung specialist, I'm stuck in "long covid". Yep I have a paint booth, nothing fancy, but helps. Don
  20. I have progressed a bit, the mechanicals are done, the body, on advice from you guys, has been rubbed down and primed. Hope to have a little more time this week and do a bit more. Anything special I should know about doing the interior? I guess it's matt whatever color I choose that matches or contrasts the exterior. I haven't fully decided yet, I'm thinking a deep red. Let me know what you think. Don
  21. Thanks Trevor it's in the bin. I'll take your advice and stick with Tamiya or Mr Color at this time as I can only use/spray Acrylics. I already wear a mask as I have bad lungs I have COPD, so anything apart from acrylics is forbidden, so the choice is made for me. I recently watched a vid by Barbados Rex, he tested the Mr Color range and gave them a pretty good wrap. I would like to have a try with enamels, but that was before Covid got me and shot my lungs, so as I said, it's a gotta be Acrylics. Hey, I'll work on Acrylics until I get a you beaut finish, well for me. I'm just happy to be back building cars and rediscovering lost skills, I just have to sort out the paint confusion. When I read about guys spraying clear and getting crazing and that sort of thing, I get real nervous as I don't want to stuff it up and have to be doing a rework - strip and repaint, as I don't know if that will wreck the body and not be recoverable, so, If I stick with Tamiya and Mr Color paints and their clears, I should be pretty safe - right? and no it doesn't add to the noise, you just helped me clear all the "advice/noise", I had filling my head, and gave me a path, thank you. Thanks for the advice and clarity, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that for me Regards Don
  22. Thanks mate, that's what I needed to know. Suggestions, Tamiya or Mr Color ? Don
  23. Yep, I'm an Aussie, but can't help you with big car parts - sorry. Think you're in the wrong place. Don
  24. Yes another one. I am and will remain confused for some time relating to paint and related products. Todays question, is varnish the same as clear. I have a can of "Vallejo acrylic gloss varnish", is varnish the same as clear. I watched a video last night relating to 2K for great shine/finish for show models, not knowing what V2 was, I looked it up and found that it was the most toxic material you could use, and stay away from it. So I wont be using that. Back to my original question, if the Vallejo "varnish" is good for a clear finish, then I will "maybe" use it. Next question, which is the better of the two clears, Tamiya or Testors, saw reports of them both being highly rated. Paint and it's related products, has to be one of the most confusing and things that everyone seems to have an opinion on, and not all the same/good. I'm fast coming to the conclusion that I stick with the major brands, Tamiya, Mr Color, AK Real Colors, etc and talk to you guys for advice, which of course I'm already doing. Don
  25. HI Peter, glad my stupidity gave you a laugh, I took it in the right vein. πŸ˜„Thanks for the reply - explanation, glues and paint are my biggest problems right now, using the glue correctly for it to work, and paint, well that's another story, but I'm gradually getting on top of it. Bit like the glue, knowing what to do is one thing, doing it something else. Thanks again for your help. Don PS. Wayback when I started this, I told you there would be a LOT of stupid questions πŸ™„πŸ˜
