Chopped '32 Ford 3-window highboy - 3-19 Update

I'm a little slow in getting this finished up after contracting Covid19 at the GSL. I'm all better now and here's a teaser shot of the completed model. More pictures will follow soon Under Glass. Thanx to all who .followed along, B. -
GSL XXVIII Official Entry photos
Bernard Kron replied to RancheroSteve's topic in Contests and Shows
Thanks again for the ongoing updates to what I think is an important archive of this historic meeting. I suggest attendees who know the entrants post their names in the comments. I'll be doing that where I recognize them. Tim Boyd's thread with photos of the names of those he photographed is also a useful cross-reference which should help build out this archive. -
Lookin' good!

Nice build, and nicely photographed. I just won this version at the GSL auction and the clarity of your photos highlights some intriguing details which I hope to exploit. The Alclad work is really well done, too. I assume you added the finned brake drums.

Amazing coverage! Not only did you manage to photograph most of the models on display, often in detail, but you gave us coverage of the supporting events as well. Thanks so much -

I always admire your straightforward style. You invariably nail the stance and textures and the overall look. -

LouverWorks resin parts
Bernard Kron replied to 68shortfleet's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
That was quick! Now I don't need to take a pic. Looking forward to the 3-window version as I just finished that conversion a current project and would love to avoid doing it again, LOL - plus I'm sure you'll a proper job whereas I as I'm far from convinced I did... The louvered fuel tank lid would be a cool "modern traditional" accessory, kinda like the louvered valence you did for the ZZ Top coupe you did. Speaking of which you might want to show the guys of pics of that sweet '34 you brought as well as a very special black Deuce you had. Actually both are deserving of their own Under Glass postings! -

I'll see if I can take a quick pic of mine to post in a little while. -
LouverWorks resin parts

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Jason at the GSL. He introduce some beautiful pie-crust whitewall slicks as seen on the Monogram 'Lil Coffin but re-engineered to fit AMT and (with very slight modification) Revell wheels. I managed to get some before they promptly sold out! I think LouverWorks is a great name. Jason also showed a pretty ex-ZZ Top coupe showing off his newly introduced louver sets for that kit, including a handsome louvered valance panel that sits below the rear deck. I consider the Revell '32 Ford louvered hoods to be basic material for any Deuce hot rod modelers. Jason explained to me the challenges they present in properly casting them which may be why they hadn't ever been offered up til now. I'm confident that LouverWorks will find them to be well worth the effort. Full hood sets for the recent Revell '29/30 Ford kits would be really useful as I believe this kit will sit alongside the Revell Deuces as basic material for hot rod modelers. I recently did a '29 Roadster with a full hood and a Deuce grill and found that it was a surprisingly simple combination as all that was needed was the shave the leading edge of the hood slightly to accomodate the very slightly narrower contour of the '32 Ford grill shell I was using. But that was an AMT '29 Roadster body on Revell '32 Ford chassis rails with a Revell grill shell. (BTW, the standard Revell '32 Ford grill shell fits easily between the Revell '29 Roadster chassis rails so you don't necessarily need to use Deuce shell that comes in the '30 Ford coupe.) One final note. With the recent issuing by the German Revell entity of the modified Stacey David kit with the DuVall windshield there is no longer an in-production kit with louvered hood sides. So, alongside the louvered hood tops and rear decks LouverWorks might considered re-popping the old Highboy Roadster/Goodguys louvered hood sides to complete the set. -
I'll be there. This will be my first - and last - GSL and I chose a small assortment of my models that I consider my best work to ,bring with me. But mainly it's one of the few chances I'll ever have to meet up with the folks I've made friends with here on the forums over the years. See you all tomorrow!

Super sanitary execution and that big smile has got to be a nice reward for such a fine job done!

Chopped '32 Ford 3-window highboy - 3-19 Update
Bernard Kron replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Definitely looks like it might be from the stepside Chevy [pickup. Here's a detail from the AMT instruction sheet (flipped and cropped for clarity): And here's a photo I just took of a duplicate axle from my stash. The axle I used was in greyish plastic while this one is a kind of maroon color, but they are otherwise identical. -
Chopped '32 Ford 3-window highboy - 3-19 Update
Bernard Kron replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks Jim. It's a plastic piece from my parts box. It looks like a Monogram part to me, but I can't seem to be able to identify it. Perhaps another forum member can tell us. It has a very deep drop, probably at least 4 scale inches, which, along with the drilled out holes, was why I chose it.. -
This project is alive and well despite my recent silence. It’s very close to done, but I’m waiting on a selection of white number decals in various fonts from Pattos’ Place in Australia. It takes a while to get here (I’m in Washington State in the USA). I’ll glue the body and wheels into place after I’ve determined the final graphics scheme. In the meantime the motor is in Place and the chassis is completed. The exhaust headers are from Replicas and miniatures Co. of Maryland, cut down and flipped. I’ve set the car up as a street rod so it has full mufflers and headlights. For TRoG competition purposes the headlights are taped (using super-thin .75 mm masking tape). I’m off to the GSL this week (I hope to see some of you there). The decals should arrive any day now so I should have this thing done on my return. Thanx for lookin’, B.

In your capable hands this turns out an impressive model, highlighting all its quirky and ornate detail with such clean execution as to avoid distracting from any of it. Bravo!

Thank you, Carl!

That's what I landed up doing with the all-Revell highboy I referred to above - black with red steelies and a red and white interior. It would even had gotten a Flattie except I had already done an all-Revell channeled version that had gotten one, so I went the vintage OHV route (stock valve covers, etc.) instead. Lowering the rear end a bit also helped fill the wheel wells. (If you're interested here are links to the highboy project: Revell '29 Ford Roadster HiBoy W.I.P. ; Revell '29 Ford Roadster HiBoy Under Glass ) I'm looking forward to seeing this project take shape.

Thanks Bill. I think this will be a worthy replacement for the one I sold off on eBay. Funny how I immediately regretted not having a more modern looking highboy roadster on my shelf... Thanks! Funny you should mention 36's. I've done a few over the years among which are a couple that I think are among my better work, but the kits were rare and uncommon enough until recently that I tended to resist acquiring them to build up a stash. There are 2 versions, the ex-Monogram 1/24th and the 1/25th AMT. I'm prejudiced towards 1/25th so my stash is all AMT '36s. The Monogram version appears to be more finely detailed but lacks a generally available chopped top - Replicas & Miniatures once offfered one, though. I tend to shy away from cutting up compound curves so a chopped AMT or the Jimmy Flintstone repops have generally proven to be a better solution to going the Kustom route. In any case, it looks like there'll be another TRaK 96er coming up soon and I've thought about attempting a chopped 3-window custom '36 in much the way that I did this Lobeck tribute Under The Gun. Here are some links to a couple of my '36 Fords:
