Good job...love the engine compartment detail. Not a big fan of those short sidewall tires on older muscle cars but they don't look too bad on this particular build!

1960 Ford F250 4x4
Terry Sumner replied to modelmonster's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Look in my thread on my restoration of a glue bomb 1960 Ford long bed pickup here.... http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=41675 If you can find even a glue bomb on eBay or somewhere, Modelhaus makes a lot of parts to restore one. They make taillights, wheels, hubcaps, glass, hoods, front bumper/grilles, rear bumpers, hood emblems and a chassis. Unfortunately they don't list a complete body! -
Looks good Nick...and it looks like you got that big 'ol decal down pretty good too! No small feat with that decal...

Got my order in today from Modelhaus! Yay! Now I can continue on this project. I ordered and received the front and rear bumpers with beautiful fresh chrome, a set of rear red taillights and the front and rear windows. The latter are vacuformed but that's ok...I'm used to working with vacuformed "glass" on airplane models so it should work out ok. Add to that the nice little door decals Tom Jackson so kindly sent me and it looks like I can now finish up this truck! Hosted on Fotki

Ya know...maybe there are snobbish IPMS clubs as you've heard, but I've been in IPMS since 1996 and I have NEVER seen that! Every IPMS'er I know has been nothing but great. I've learned an immense amount of modeling techniques from my fellow IPMS'ers. I've competed in many IPMS local club contests, Regional Conventions and US Nationals and ALL of them were run and judged by guys who have a passion for this hobby and strive to "do it right.". There will always be a bad apple or two in any gathering of human beings and this would certainly hold true whether your club was an IPMS club or an independant club. Don't worry about those idiots...just forge ahead. Having a club is one of the best ways to get together with like minded people in what is basically a "loner" kind of activity and there is the pretty good chance you will make some pretty good friends in the process. I know I have. I joined the IPMS club, Bay Colony Historical Modelers Association back in 1995 and have loved it. Some of the fellows in that club have been lifelong modelers longer than me...and I go back to the 60's! And some of those guys have become lifelong friends. And as for IPMS being all about military modeling...totally untrue. My club is split up pretty good with maybe half the guys interested more in cars than military. And as for rivet counters? Well some guys are yes. But many aren't. Just because one belongs to IPMS does not mean they enter contests and just build for contests only. But if one does choose to build for a contest, well...then you have to be a rivet counter to some degree...if you're competing to win. After all...if you choose to enter a model where you have disregarded accuracy completely you're going to have a hard time competing against an accurate well built slew of other models. While there is no hard and fast definition of a "rivet counter", I think one may assume that a "rivet counter", as used by the modeling community, would mean any modeler who takes his zest for absolute accuracy to an extremely high degree. And IMHO...EVERY modeler is a "rivet counter" to some degree....it just depends on how far he/she is willing to go to make a good model. I see it as a bad thing that some modelers denigrate the rivet counter with such disdain. It is after all those rivet counters who are responsible in a large part for getting the model manufacturers to make much better kits over the last couple of decades! And those guys are the ones who build the models that set the standards for which we mere mortal modelers see in the magazines and stand in awe of and aspire to someday build like them!

Guys...I do know about the distributor...don't forget..I've been around drag racing for over 40 years. I figured that's what you were going after Chris but I can see that this one is clearly mounted to the front of the intake manifold. I was just wondering why you had mounted it there that's all. I thought maybe you had a poor photo somewhere and you were under the impression that was how it was supposed to be mounted. Thanks for your explanation. "I found a couple of detailed pictures online that demonstrates this better. Pretty cool innovation." Indeed it is. One place I can think of that this setup would really help is the classic Big Block in a Tri-five Chevy where there is no room for the distributor at the firewall!

Chris...I can't resist asking you this...Why do you have the distributor coming out of the intake manifold? Or is that one of those things you wished you had done differently? Terry

Well I didn't make the deadline but I have the offending part in the EasyOff right now. Once it's back to bare plastic I can restart. That was a bummer as I was so close. But I was so dang tired I didn't even get out of bed till NOON!!! -

6th Annual 24hr Build
Terry Sumner replied to Wildrice's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well I'm done for the night. The paint on the roof of the top section wrinkled and bubbled so I have to strip it. And I have nothing here to strip it with. Gotta go to the market in the morning and get some Easyoff oven cleaner and get that ###### paint off. Everything else is done to this point that I need the roof to build the walls of the top section...so I'm screwed for now. Sorry guys... -

I painted the top of this with some slower drying stuff. Might be a big problem. Even in the dehydrator it's taking a lonnnnnnnng time. Might have to just let it cook for quite a few hours before I can finish up the top section.... -

Great...just had a little setback. The woodgrain decals did not stick to the side panels! Peeled right off. Maybe try the other set that came with the kit.... -
6th Annual 24hr Build
Terry Sumner replied to Wildrice's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
OK...22:30 hours. I've got an honest 8 hours in this build as I lost a couple helping my son and making dinner for my wife and I. And here's where I'm at... The chassis is sitting on it's 4 wheels all glued in. The engine is in with some minor detail painting to do on the fan/supercharger belt drive and the driveshaft. Hosted on Fotki I gotta tell you...that front end was a complicated sonofagun to put together! Lot's of really small parts there! Hosted on Fotki Here's how it looks with the body on the frame. The interior tub is glued in. Now to do the interior. I think I'm going to use some flocking for the floor.... Still have to build the upper section yet... Hosted on Fotki -

I dunno Doc....I'm getting pretty tired already....Just lost an hour or 2 helping my son. I had to fabricate a bracket to hold the engine down in his Honda until he can go get a new top motor mount. Good thing I have a garage with all the tools... Back to the build! -
6th Annual 24hr Build
Terry Sumner replied to Wildrice's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Had to take a break for a while and help my son fix his car...broken motor mount. So far I have the chassis about 90% complete...... Hosted on Fotki And here I just kind of did a mockup to get an idea of how it's going to sit. One thing I did change was the rear tires. The kit tires were just too misshapen to use plus they were slicks. And no one in their right mind would be driving a Surf Wagon with slicks...they'd use treaded tires. So I pirated these these from the 67 Chevelle pro streeet kit. I just had to narrow the wheels by about 3/16" to fit even though the tread width was about the same... Hosted on Fotki -

Almost 4 hours into this 24 hour thing. Engine coming along..... Hosted on Fotki Chassis coming along too..... Hosted on Fotki Body with 5 or 6 coats of HOK Kandy Scarlett. The stuff along the mid body line that looks krinkly or like bad orange peel is actually woodgrain molded into that trim line. Will have to paint that later... Hosted on Fotki The flash has washed it out a little...it's actually darker...more like the previous pic.... Hosted on Fotki -
