Scratch built race car transporter
LOBBS replied to martinfan5's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
All right, I'm jealous. I still haven't found time to get started on the one for my Lonestar. Great work. -
Very, very clean work. Great job with the detailing.

How angry do you get?
LOBBS replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can say I used to get frustrated at times back in my younger days. It was especially hard for me to miss finishing up a project for an artificial deadline like a show. It never failed that if I pushed too hard or got upset I'd end up screwing up whatever I was working on and have to start over or repair it. Like most of the guys here have said you just have to recognize your limits and walk away if you have to. -
You've definitely come to the right place if you're looking to make your way back into the hobby. What kind of mods do you have planned?

Are the tires that come in the kit the standard issue California Wheels tires ('66 Chevelle wagon, '67 Chevelle, '64 Chevy truck) or something different?

Home-made paint booths seem to be a popular subject
LOBBS replied to LOBBS's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
No offense taken Gregg. I don't mind having $250 ($150 if you consider that I sold my last booth to get the seed money for this one) in my booth when the only other carbon-filtered, downdraft hobby booth of a similiar size starts around $570. Artograph 1530 I've been in manufacturing my entire adult life and one of the tidbits of knowledge I've picked up is to always buy the best tools/equipment that you can afford. I'll have a lot less in this booth than what I can pay someone else for and it will be customized exactly as I want it. This is my third go around building my own downdraft with Klaus' instructions, improving on design and materials each time. My Dayton blower is rated at 273 cfm @ 0 SP. A downdraft booth should be pulling 50 feet per minute. That is in contrast to a crossdraft or updraft booth that requires 100 feet per minute. I selected this particular blower as it would provide me with 100 feet per minute through standard filters and no exhaust. Since I am choosing to run slightly more restictive carbon filters, this fan will still have plenty of pull no matter what ducting I go with. -
Revell 1955 Chevy Belair Hardtop - Test Shot Pics & Review
LOBBS replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
At the risk of being sacrilegious, there are some styling cues I don't care for on the tri-fives. I love the 1:1 '57 from every angle but the front 3/4 view. Something about how the spear terminates behind the headlight bucket has always struck me as "off". I've debated doing a "naked" mild custom '57 shaving off the side trim and molding all the other chrome details into the body for a modern-car monochrome type appearance. I haven't been able to find anything close to my idea through Google searching so I'm having some difficulty visualizing the finished product. I don't care for the '56 at all so it's out. I'm feeling drawn now to the '55 after seeing several customized street rod style builds during my '57 research. The only thing I don't really like about the Revell '55 hardtop in the extension on the rear spear down to the bumper. I much prefer just the spear by itself like on your gold build. I'm wanting to do a tri-five for the "fleet" just don't know which way to go. If you see an AMT '57 Street Machine and ProShop kit hit the swap section I've decided to go Revell '55. -

I'll get some more pics up hopefully this weekend. Life keeps pulling me away from getting this thing finished. -
That's just sinister.

I've never been a huge fan of chrome so I love the toned down look. Great job on the Elky.

I may not be around for a while.

Take care Matthew. It's always tough when a furry loved one passes. We'll be here when you're ready to come back. -
Revell 1955 Chevy Belair Hardtop - Test Shot Pics & Review
LOBBS replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Thanks for posting up the pics. I wanna do a custom tri-five and I'm still up in the air whether to stick with the newer-tool AMT '57 I've already got or go with the new-tool Revell '55. There's a lot I like and dislike about each. -

Thanks for the heads up, a little easier to do a custom that way. -

Just looking to clarify. On the 1:1 the rear trim is a separate piece, is it a separate piece on the kit also? -
I'll throw my vote in here for the '67-'72 Chevy truck as it one of the most popular trucks of all time. As a model, it's saddled with annual era tooling design. Throw in a '67 Camaro off the Revell '69 Camaro tooling and I'd be in heaven. In terms of body proportions, the only "right" '67 Camaro was the original annual. The newer tool by AMT definitely has some issues.

What Type of Modeler are you??
LOBBS replied to Romell R's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
#2 and #4 here. I don't think I've built anything straight from the box since I was a kid unless you count the ones I've helped my own kids build. -
Having dealt with Don both on the phone and through e-mail I would not hesitate to place an order again with him. I personally have not had a single issue with him, either with the delivery or the quality of the products that he casts.

Home-made paint booths seem to be a popular subject
LOBBS replied to LOBBS's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Finally getting back to this project. I hate painting without a booth and I can't get back to building with out painting. I'm riveting this booth together and the idea of laying out a couple of hundred holes got me looking for a better solution. So I finally came up with an idea while inspecting some aerospace assemblies we were doing at work. Most aerospace assemblies rely on a handful of tightly toleranced (for size and location) holes to temporarily fit mating parts. When using these ATA or "Advanced Technology Assembly" holes, mating pieces are pinned while the rest of the pilot holes are drilled to size and riveted. When the other holes are done the ATA holes are finished up. In this spirit, I found this piece of angle in the scrap bin. After truing it up, I got four holes put in it with a 5" spacing a 1/2" off the inner bend. With this little tool, I only have to worry about locating one hole dead center along the edge of a panel, attach my bracket and drill the other 3 in perfect relationship. On the longer panels, I can walk my bracket to the next set of holes and repeat the process always assured of 5" spacing a 1/2" off the bend. It's a simple little thing but will save a ton of time when it comes to banging this booth out. -

Food Dehydrators & Paint Dryers
LOBBS replied to JayVee's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've had one of these Nesco dehydrators for years and got it for under $40 during hunting season. Lowest temp setting is 95 degrees on mine. I've got an extra set of trays. Half have the centers cut out for bodies and assemblies, the other half are original. I've left it running at 95 degrees for years at a time with absolutely no harm whatsoever to anything inside. Thanks for posting these Len. I forgot to check the batteries on my camera and they died right after I got to the show.

Looking for someone to cast a transmission for me
LOBBS replied to LOBBS's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
The casting does look to be top notch on that transmission however it appears to be either a Viper or Mustang version of the tranny. I remember awhile back sending MAD an email regarding the source of the master. I've sent Kris a PM to see if he'll cast up the one from the Revell Camaro/Firebird for me.
