I don't think it's right
samdiego replied to Ben's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's a little bit of why I stepped away from competitive building years ago. -
Good grief, even with granny used in the description? That was the episode title
-
sorry about the title. This is obviously the Hot Rod version of the Beverly Hillbilly's Olds as done by George Barris for one episode of the show. Actually it's as done by me because I took some liberties. The little reference I could find showed several differences between the 1:1 and the kit parts, so I improvised to suit me.I just didn't like the yellow seat inserts and I removed the woodgrain from the outside of the bed. The bed floor was planked with African Cherry veneer. I am keeping an eye out for an interior, too. My bio says I shoot for a seven out of ten on the "Would I let you see it" scale. Well, I'll put this one as a five. I had several problems, some self induced. but I'm about ready to move on to the next victim. I came up with this shifter while the BH build was ongoing and decided the roadster was the right place for it. The eagle is sculpy sculpted with an exacto and baked with brief passes with a lighter Only here can flaming jugs be a good thing. Carefully masked, sprayed and pinstriped, oh wait, this is a rad shell flame decal from Revell's '32 The trash was thrown in just to round out the title. it's for an HO diorama.

running model engine
samdiego replied to jw78z28's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
craftsmanshipmuseum.com Try this site. I've been to the museum. They have Conleys, but they have stuff that make Conleys look a little toylike in terms of sophostication -
Ahh, my second car. Dark green, 400, 4speed, ragtop. Way too much car for a 17 year old, it would do more than 140. I'm looking forward to more photos

1. My fault, I forgot to click off the "include debilitating virus" box when posting to the gallery 2. String pulled out of the tin can in Hawaii when run over by another errant cruise ship 3. Gregg ran out of quarters 4. There was a meerkat stuck in our interweb tube 5. SAE hired teenagers to hack the site 6. The hamster fell off of the little wheel 7. Outlaws cut the telegraph wire 8. Harry took a snow day 9. That accursed Dr. Evil! 10. That Assange guy hates model cars too

Much easier to clearcoat the egg. Spray paint really irritates poultry. But foil the egg after the clear

Musings on the Lil' Coffin
samdiego replied to samdiego's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
One other caveat, the HWs Lil Coffin has had a few name changes through the years. The version at retail currently is the Double Demon. The only member of this group that's warming pegs at Target and Walmart right now. -
My best results have always been with Testors Flat spray. I like to use a color close to the carpet color, I generally go with black carpet anyway. I've also been able to color white and blonde flocking with whatever color spray I needed like a light blue or green carpet. I mask what needs it and toss the freshly sprayed part into a paper bag of fuzz and shake. I'll give it a half hour before knocking the loose stuff off.

Musings on the Lil' Coffin
samdiego replied to samdiego's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just between us, I've never cared about the Dukes and wouldn't own a Charger, but that's another thread. Obviously to make the top of this list it's going to have to be something that was both a HotWheels and Styrene. The Red Baron's styrene numbers seem good, It's had a shorter life than the LC. It hasn't been a HWs as often as the Coffin, but that doesn't translate specifically into production numbers. The Baron's history is a little out of order as it wasn't a real car until it established itself amongst the kid crowd. I guess it still qualifies as a single car. -
There are a few brands and types out there. I've had decals react strongly to one and completely shrug off another, so experiment first. Some will cause the decal to shrivel up in a scary manner, but leave it alone, don't poke, prod, or blot. They straighten themselves out as they set. Good Luck and Merry Xmas

Decals always seem to be a crapshoot. Some of the Euro brands use Cartograph, which are so good that they will advertise that on the box. I agree. The American companies seem to just go with the lowest bidder. I would try some of the solvaset line of decal helpers. There are several different brands but I like this one. I haven't had any completely unworkable decals since the Monogram Mongoose '57 Chevy funny car from the 80's, which really sucked because the decals were a huge part of the look.

What is an annual kit?
samdiego replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
When I was a kid . . . no really, in the 60's promos were used as a sales tool by the dealers. They would have the entire line up mounted to a big plaque or something. This showed different color combos on different models in a more three dimensional way than the brochure but didn't fill up the lot. I spent a lot of time perusing these displays and even wheedled a few from the salesmen. They could also be purchased through the parts counter. This is the main reason that the yearly changes were followed so closely. -
Musings on the Lil' Coffin
samdiego replied to samdiego's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A run of 20,000 would be considered pretty limited by HWs standards. The Coffin is still being sold. I saw the latest version today in one of Hotwheels higher end lines at Walmart. -
Rough year for classic cars
samdiego replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe the extremely rare Barracougar. fun to say Bloatedcougar, I saw one a few years ago near my house that had been hit by a car in the early AM. The furry kind. Scary that they are that close (hundred yards or so) um, too much coffee -
Why is primer showing through on final coat???
samdiego replied to camarobuilder's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
But you have to think about the why. The problem is putting paint on heavy enough that it gets together with itself and it flows away from the edge. The coats of paint need to be so thin that you think it will never cover. You need a lot of coats timed after flashing so the paint can't move. You might be able to hide a lot of the problems with your cab using a Detailer type wash into the panel lines. I've had that work. -
Are you a "scale snob?"
samdiego replied to ian ashton's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll build anything, any scale, any time, any where. I guess that makes me a scale slob -
Musings on the Lil' Coffin
samdiego replied to samdiego's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just read an interview with Tom Daniel at HotWheelscollectors.com He stated that the Red Baron was his best seller with 2 million units in a year and a half. That's a lot of model cars. -
What else do you collect
samdiego replied to BIGTRUCK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
yeah, that could be a high estimate but it is realistic. I only display the current year though. C'mon, they're only a buck. Consider the timespan, I'm 51 and I started with Matchbox when I was 3. I did have them all hanging in the garage at one point (still carded), when I moved, it was a two day job JUST to remove the thumbtacks from the wall. The cars had already been packed. -
I never get to invent anything! This is a reject. Seepage makes it look like the car is driving out of a shadow, but not being installed, it was easy to shoot. You sure do a nice job of pumping up "under glass"

Quick tip for future similar projects. it almost looks like there could be something on the TV screen but I can't quite see it. I've used magazine photos for this. my favorite source are the automotive book catalogues that I get in the mail. They have photos of the book covers that have smaller photos of the subject matter. I either Krystal Klear them to the back of the clear TV screen if there is one or to the screen itself and clear coat. I lean toward the old B&W images to bolster the vintage look. Just sayin'

What else do you collect
samdiego replied to BIGTRUCK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm with Droid, except that I'm a little over twelve. I'm still buying HotWheels. There must be around 7 or 8 thousand in the house by now. That was a logical progression after starting with matchbox about 1962. I've been apt to pick up anything that could be related to transportation over the years. There is a huge collection of car mags back to the little pages and a smattering of real art.
