  1. I've done everything but the paint and subsequent stuff. This is a really thick, heavy body. That prevented sink marks, even in the roof with all of the headliner detail. But the body I have suffers from die alignment problems. The area at the base of the sail panels humps a good scale inch at the seam. I've been planing gradually. Instead of rescribing the trim lines, I'm just going to go with cutting the foil to the correct width and wrapping that around the edge. I'm still loving the kit, the finished motor hole and dual 4 bbl are really nice.
  2. and my research shows that you guys are part of why this site is the best source for model car info ever and is the best model hangout on the planet oh yeah, there's the magazine, too
  3. Wowzers! That's a sweet one. What 's available in the way of 50's and 60's Euro stuff? Are their Lotus Cortinas and odd stuff we don't see much of here? And since you are new here, just what are your feelings about energy consumption of the painting processes used by the 1:1 carmakers?
  4. Actually I do get a little winded when I shoot models on the patio. Especially with those huge Krylon cans
  5. Thanks or sorry or whatever, I'm an art guy. It's not like I ever do anything that involves spelling . . . wait a minute
  6. A '34 Ford. Chopped 6", channeled frame deep, no hood, no fenders. Vintage OHV V8, six carbs (actually disguised fuel injection), Limefire headers, late 5 spd trans. Maybe Torque Thrust IIs, maybe contrasting solids with trim rings and baby moons on wide white cheaters.
  7. Second fave. This one always gets me in trouble, I should stop telling it to women, but I can't. Why do women wear make up and perfume? Because they're ugly and they stink!
  8. I gots hours of material, but this is one of my faves and the shortest joke in history. Six words, that's all you get. Two dyslectics walk into a bra . . .
  9. I've got no pix, but I do know that there can be a lot of wet areas out there and the salt will build up just like the slush and stuff back in the snowbelt. Of course they knock off as much as possible after a run, but the stuff can really accumulate in the wheelwells and the lower body even when the wheels are fully enclosed. So if you turn out to have added too little, you can just claim it was one of the drier years, too much and you just haven't cleaned it off yet, you are good either way!
  10. I guess ugly is a subjective thing, I love the flat fin cars. The new Hot Rod TV is on a car from Bodie Stroud's shop called Scarliner. It's a fairly incredible combination of the '60 Starliner and the new Ford GT. The engine and trans were used with a handbuilt frame and GT suspension parts. The gauges and switchgear from the GT were used inside. Amazing. The body was left pretty much as is, I think they shaved the door handles and they left the signature stars on the sail panel. It also looked like they went for a solid red instead of a metallic for the body color. No mention of the cost of essentially re-bodied GT, but it was a ground up build, first rate. And what a cool 1:25 it would make.
  11. After my experiences with the 1:25 scale stuff from this company, I'll at least wait to see what's written in MC before I consider one of these. IMO they have a tendancy to overcomplicate things and sometimes miss key dimensions.
  12. Alcohol, I prefer Methanol but even Isopropyl should do the trick. I use just a little on my fingertip which means that no abrasives are involved as long as I've washed my hands recently. Technically, you should wear rubber gloves for the Methanol, I don't because I'm immortal
  13. Okay. One huge, glaring oversight in this spectacular Trophy Series kit. WHERE IS THE FRICKIN' TROPHY??!! I wanted another trophy, dammit!
  14. I just found that decal in the starliner kit, cool addition. I'm also likin' the full-size vintage style AMT sticker. Thanks for both AMT, and for poppin the Starliner too. Man I would love to get my hands one of those "model" kats, it's probably the same high-impact plastic that Rat Finks and most gumball toys of the '60s were made from. The detail looks pretty soft and I'll bet they don't hold paint very well. I sure don't remember those in any of the hundreds of AMT kits I had back then. I wonder if they might have been from another source, like a trade show giveaway.
  15. About 1967 or so, I wrote to AMT asking about replacement parts for a long out of production T-Bird kit that I had gotten hold of. Budd wrote back to say that they didn't have what I was looking for and sent one of those decals. I water-slid it onto my desk and it stayed for years. Wish I had it now, the letter too, for that matter. The desk itself, not so much
  16. I was layed off two days before Xmas because I was one of the more expensive guys in the shop ( high end signage and public art stuff). I've had it up to here with the attitude that if you own a business, no matter what size, you should get as rich as posssible as soon as possible. I'm sick of hearing about their new cars and houses and trips, but they can't afford high quality workers. And they wonder why things go south when they try to get by with a bunch of low-wage rookies. Unions are a joke, Just an excuse for a few people to make more money from other's labor. 100 years ago they may have been neccesary, but not today, Detroit is finding that out now. my very expensive union did zip for me 7 years ago in a dispute that cost me a 9 year position, completely ignoring my excellent job performance over the course of those years. I got a call Monday asking for help at a shop I was in a few years ago. It just happened to be for more money than the job I just lost, but I would have leapt regardless. The market for what I do is completely in the toilet in So Cal. Anyway, I'd suck it up if I were you and I'm as prideful as they come. A bird in the hand, my friend, a bird in the hand. Of course nothing prevents you from scouting around while you are still with income. A $4 an hour loss?! Ouch. But these are the worst times I've ever seen. Good luck to you. Wow, this is the most angry post I've ever done.
  17. At least the '32 would be easier to chop than the Merc. Now I'm hopin for a new '34. I've been staring an old ZZ Top kit for a while and as badly as I want a '34 I just can't get over the problems with the two piece body.
  18. The Model Cars Mag Banner was shown also. I think I caught the logo at least 4 times. I hope the laymen make the connection. Great episode!
  19. What was up with the Bonneville anyway? Are Trumpeter's plane kits the same hit or miss? It was way better than the Monte Carlo, however. First, the inexplicable wrongness of the roof and vent wing shapes. How does that happen? Then there was the chrome problem. Was it just me or did anyone else notice that the sweet replacement chrome tree was always colder to the touch than the original? Really, why would that be? And after touting their tooling made of beryllium spheres, it looked like some spots in the dies never made it to final polishing. The side glass was invisible but the rear window had a slight texture. I was skeptical of the side trim treatment, but in the end that's was one of the standout aspects. it worked better than Revell's trim for the '55. If only the mirrors and and door handles had been included on that tree. The wheels were disappointing, but after painting and mounting in the whitewall sandwich, I like them enough. As for the '55, I used HOK spray bomb Lime Time Pearl with clear over it and the white base coat on the rear. I really the like simple black grille and the way the green, black, white and chrome work together. The HOK kinda has a satiny glow even under clear. Great kit, wish the decals fit better, like the decals in Revell's Mustang. I used to love the Cragar five spokes.
  20. Actually, my first car was the base model without the fin and the fancy wheelcovers Thanks guys
  21. boy, are you getting up there! Happy Day my friend!
  22. So, the high-end signage and public art business is in the toilet here in CA. I haven't worked since Dec 22. Thank God I never throw anything away. I'm pulling from a 40 year stash. What a mixed bag this was. Some really good, some pretty bad. I like the finished piece well enough, but it has its problems Anybody ever try this one from Monogram? Why is the front end so wrong? Whose was this originally? I just noticed in the pix that I've nicked the rear bumper during photos, wheres the super glue? What I lusted for in '75. Sale table find $4 I'm sure this was on sale too, but I've had it so long I can't remember OK not quite contest finished but certainly entertainment center ready in this house and it's kept me from spending money and/or jumping off a bridge
  23. I love that event! A full day of walking, that's for sure. Nothing beats $5 Hot Rod Hell t-shirts
