Oldest Monogram car kit?
samdiego replied to Scott Colmer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
and the original box?! I'd have paid a jackson for that in a heartbeat. screamin deal great avatar, awesome idea for a rod -
The above being said, i've had good luck with Testor's system. I scored about a dozen of em for $.50 ea at wally's a few years ago. You really need to flatten the paper between soms books and sneak up on them with the clear coat. A big plus is having access to an art program. In a worse case scenario, expense wise, you could do it all at a Kinko's. A little close work with an x-acto can remedy the background color issue. if possible print an extra fat outline to allow for errant knife paths. And keep your thumb out of the way

Memory lane, how many remember?
samdiego replied to RatRod's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's to the Ohio contingency. Hot Summer days, the smell of the lakes, red-winged blackbirds buzzing, milkweed floating on the breeze. riding stingrays (I had an Iverson drag styled model) and minibikes to the swimming area, lawn mower engined go-karts, creeks, woods, corn fields, livestock, the smell of the freshly opened model. G.C. Murphy's, J.C. Penneys, Woolworth each had thousands of models stocked at a time. I had the most idyllic upbringing you could ask for. An interesting aside; you can still get Boy's Life magazine issues from the 60's on paybay, about $2-$4 ea. great model, bicycle and other ads for all the 60's icons -
Thanks guys. The kit comes with two decks and motors but only one hull. This would make an easy vacuum forming project, maybe later. I wish I could see my thumb

Memory lane, how many remember?

Capt. Kangaroo told me i could run faster and jump higher with PFs and i was a believer. and you got prizes with them. who didn't need a whistle with a secret compartment in it? that might have been keds, I was always a sucker for the free prize thing -
i've sliced a tendon in my left thumb and will have a cast for at least 6 weeks. i started with easy stuff but then decided to increase the danger factor by adding the dreaded x-acto. sort of getting back on the horse. real mahogany veneer on the woodie. I did it at work with an x-acto. the injury, not the boats

The search for Gold Dabloons

Knowing that the A Bros used Ford station wagon parts for the front hatch and stuff, have you noticed the resemblance of the Deora II to a Taurus wagon? -
Airbrush Dilemma From San Diego Is Fixed
samdiego replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That says a bit for the Grex Guys as well. I was there when the deal was struck and even though I tried the same tactic as Gregg, the outcome was slightly different. I got a nifty free brochure. (full color!) Seriously, the demo was impressive. They are sweet units. -
One of the problems we face is that the decals always seem to be a crapshoot. Even from the same model company they can be completely different from kit to kit. The Cartograph stuff in the Tamiya kits are incredible. Who else advertises the decal manufacturer on the box lid? They do get mushy under Solvaset though. Jbwelda's advice is right on with walking away until they are done festering. They can look really scary during the process and it can be hard to resist "helping" them. One thing that made a huge difference in my modeling was buying one of the magnifier on an arm things. Even when I still had young guy incredi-vision my contest stuff was always done under the magic biggifier. And you gotta wanna Of Course, I am really good, too. Check that avatar! Oops, painkillers taking over one handed keyboard input

Has anybody survived this kit? How?

AMT Ertl Blueprinter Parts Pack
samdiego replied to Lyn's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wish I could be more help but I've got a fresh cast on one arm and I can't root through the storage just yet. I've got a few of the packs and could name them by sight if I could find them. Can you do pic of the instructions? I've heard from more than one source that in researching subjects for these kits, AMT got a group of the speed manufacturers together for one big meeting. And the story goes that it was such a good event for all parties that it eventually led to the formation of SEMA. Of course that could be the story behind Revell's parts packs and it could be totally made up. But that's what I heard. -
I've taken a fair amount of teasing over the years for lovin' the wacky show rod stuff. This was one I never did back in the day and I'm actually pretty stoked. I hope the retool is a good one. Where's the Tijuana Taxi? Both have been absent way too long. Good to see Tom Daniels' name in the stores again. I'm still drawing the line at the Bathtub Buggy, though.

I saw two of the 1/16 antiques from Lindberg at the local over the weekend. I think they were the Mercer and the Stutz. -
How to spray HOK Kustom Kolors?
samdiego replied to Smart-Resins's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I was told that the stuff was a urathane (sp). I've thinned mine with a standard auto type thinner. It's definitely different. I found it to be rather resistant to running, but the colors are very transparent so light coats are a must. it does flow out nicely and rubs out well too. -
I need some help guys
samdiego replied to Nick Winter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What kind of stripes were on those tires? Have you tried chucking an exacto into a compass and cutting decal sheet? Oh, they were factory pencil whites weren't they? I dug Rockfish, he inspired a few of my winter driving techniques growing up in Ohio. Marion, Ohio. The town that was in the Steam shovel article last issue. I think that's the first reference to the home town I've seen since I left in '77. What an odd place to finally it see it mentioned. -

Got my MCM July issue!
samdiego replied to RodBurNeR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I always thought it depended on how many articles the letter carrier wanted to read. Not that I mind waiting. If my rag can inspire some hobbyless mailman to buy a model kit and have at it then so be it! -
Revell Merc roof query?
samdiego replied to HotRodaSaurus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is a build from the early 80's. Sorry about the pic quality. It's AMT's with a scaled 4in front, 6in rear chop with slanted B-posts. I think it was cut into 7 pieces. Across, lengthwise, around that rear window, and I think I cut it to keep the peak above the windshield, plus the posts. The 1-piece rear window would be from a '50. Those dimensions are what appeal to me. I would like to chop Revell's Merc but haven't gotten around to it yet. This car was one of my first to appear in SAE back in '86 I think. What is invisible here are the crescent tailights from the AMT '57 that are set into the '53 Chevy rear fender tips molded to the Merc. Alas, a tragic victim of the horrific entertainment center collapse of '89. I still have the custom license plate made with the serial numbers from the bottom of a decal sheet. -
Michael Jackson dead at 50
samdiego replied to Custom Hearse's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Undeniably one of the most famous people on the planet. The 50 shows in Britain were sellouts in 4 hours. I'm thinking that systems limitations could have held that back and it could have been faster. I wouldn't say that I was a fan, but as many radio stations did daylong tributes, I realized just how prolific this guy was and how familiar the music is. He was a master of his genre. Perhaps impossible to understand, but a master. -
Canada gots southern stuff?

I got this for my birthday last week. A right time, right place kinda situation. It's a '94. It's got 110,000 miles. Everything works. It really is in great shape other than the missing panel between the tailights. The original owner cried over the envelope of oil change receipts that she gave me. How much for this modern day classic? ( I've wanted one for years) $800 I'm so stoked. I sold my trusty Stanza for the $500 I paid for it five years ago. It was a really good car, but I couldn't resist. So for $300 out of pocket, I lost 80,000 miles and gained more than 10 miles per gallon. And a few style points. The more I drive it, the more I love it.

Mine didn't come out that well, I think I can salvage the top as a fridge magnet though. Cutting some kind of block to the inside dimensions would help. Sign foam would be perfect for that. I'd also like to reduce it and try a 1/25 size.
