  1. Yeah, the Revell kit is a fine kit.I've bought two already and may buy more. You just can't swap many pieces between it and the AMT kit because of the scaling differences.
  2. 1)'59 or '60 Chevy 2 door sedan 2)'64 or '65 Barracuda 3)'49 Buick 4) '55 Imperial hardtop 5) '69 or '70 AMC Rebel
  3. There's a basic size difference between the two kits, the Revell kit being the larger of them. How do I know this?I've tried swapping parts. The mechanical items may change over easier but the body items are where the problems occur. The AMT grille is narrower, the shape at the rear of the body is very different and engineered differently on the Revell kit.The dual headlamp conversion pieces from the old issue AMT kit almost fit the revell body but would need plastic strip added to fill a gap at the top of the fender(or some reshaping of the custom pieces on their sides to conform to the Revell body).
  4. I've had more than one favorite based on different factors.I've liked the build experience on some, the paint quality on some, the stance or the subject matter on some, and some have drawn compliments from fellow modelers. Some day I'll have a build that combines it all and that one will become my favorite.
  5. I'm wondering if a factor in the graininess of BMF after burnishing could be the smoothness of the surface onto which the foil is applied. After all,how many of us polish drip moldings and window reveal moldings?I've experienced the graininess with both the old and new glue BMF sheets.
  6. I did finish the Tyrrell! It wasn't until Thursday morning, but it's done.I had come up to make dinner on Wednesday evening and was so tired and chilled(it's cold in my basement and the outside temp being about 15 degrees didn't help) that I didn't make it back downstairs to finish the car.I ended up dozing off in the recliner for about 2 hours, awakened only by the boom of firecrackers at midnight.
  7. A quick(?) survey-How many of you are going to hit the model bench for some extended build time today or tonight? That's MY plan.I've got a Tamiya Tyrell 020 waiting for final assembly and I'm gonna try to make it my final build of 2013.
  8. The '64 Cutlass WAS made into one of those altered wheelbase cars along with the Edsel, the Nova and the Mustang fastback.
  9. I recall hearing that there were several of the old MPC kits in the tool inventory when one was taken some years ago.One was the '70-73 style Camaro but with the subsequent release of the new AMT tool there wouldn't be a valid reason to reissue that or the '70-'74 'Cuda with the recent debut of the new revell kit.I wonder if these old tools would now be scrapped because of the newer releases of the same (or nearly so) subject. Along this same line-what has become of the "new tool" AMT '57 Chevy from the 1990s? Every re-release of the subject from AMT has been the old tool.
  10. That "Fast and Furious" movie was on TV earlier this year.It was kinda lame. And it involved a sports car race, not hot rods.
  11. It was the Big T for me,Christmas 1962.I was eight.Dad built it for me even though I was already building my own 1/25 scale kits. A close second would be the first kit I ever got for Christmas-an AMT 1960 Buick hardtop,Christmas 1959.I was five.
  12. In my area of metro Detroit we have four viable hobby shops(not counting Hobby Lobby). On the other side of the metro area there three or four more shops. In fact, one of them is looking for a larger store because he wants to carry a bigger variety of inventory. The internet stores are useful for buying things like photoetch, resin, and other things that the local stores can't or won't carry.
  13. The AMT '67 Chevelle Pro Street chassis works under the '67 GTO or the '65 GTO.It's the instrument panel that needs alteration.
  14. Looks like a VERY well done build. With a different background it could taken for a real car.
  15. I remember reading items over the years about the low quality level of the Australian built products coming into this country.Perhaps this was a factor in the decisions.
  16. The Meyers Manx that I just finished. After scraping the plating from the gluing surfaces of many of the parts they still wouldn't stay glued together, the metal pins for the front wheels were not included in the kit,the tie rods dont come close to the wheel backs, the exhaust system pieces wouldn't line up,I lost one of the carburetors, and the locating pin on the end of the trans case broke off so the engine/trans wouldn't line up until I pinned it.It's just one of those kits that fought me all the way. But it's a good 4 footer!
  17. I'm thinking "Winning".That's a film film in which the racing action is decidedly secondary to the story line like "Rush"."LeMans" has by far the best racing scenes,"Grand Prix"'s cinematography is first rate,if a little too 60s self indulgent artsy. But no movie combines both great racing action with a decent storyline. The late actor Paul Newman was asked if there was ever a racing movie combining a great story with great racing action. He said no,commenting that any movie was going to have one or the other characteristic, not both."Rush" come the closest but,for my taste, the racing scenes could have been longer. The movie that comes the closest to combining the two elements is "The World's Fastest Indian" starring Anthony Hopkins about Burt Munro and his efforts to run his motorcycle at Bonneville.
  18. Only automotive builds for me.I've only ever built one plane(a Revell F4d Skyray) and that was about 50 years ago.I think I might have done one ship kit back then, too.I just have no interest in anything military or in commercial aircraft. I confess to lately having a slight desire to do a Boss Mustang-as in P51 Mustang.Paint it a Grabber color and stripe it up just to be perverse.I just haven't convinced myself to do it yet. I think a Titanic kit would be an easy build-Buy the kit, take it home, fill up the bath tub, open the box and shake parts into tub-model's done!
  19. Welcome,Brian. If you're interested, stop by the Dearborn Ice Skating Center on Ford Road on the 3rd Friday of the month(not this month) and check out the Downriver Model Car Club. It's a large group with members having a wide variety of model bulding interests.
  20. My first '34 Pickup,the '32,'36,'40,and '49 Fords were all black.My '50 Ford was gray.

    Meyers Manx 4

A nice build of a kit that has fought me all the way along the project.I'm envious of your ability to make the exhaust pieces join up so closely.
  22. Question from left field-Did you decide to display the model with the raised body because it didn't fit on the completed tub very well? That's the problem I had when I built mine 30 years ago.I checked the fit throughout the build and it was fine until I finished the car. Then it didn't line up very well. For a long time I thought it might have been something I messed up but a few years ago I bought another one already built and it too had the same poor body fit.
  23. "Finished" is a foreign word. I never kept track of the number but my peak had to be in the late 60s or early 70s when I had more time in the summer between the school years. Now I'm lucky to finish four or five a year,if even that many. Since I have about 1200 unbuilt kits now,I look at them as life insurance.I plan to live to be 400 years old so I can build them all.So far,so good!
  24. I'll suggest a different line.If his interests go there, try an import car kit from Tamiya. They go together very well, especially the ones with fewer parts like the older 1/24th scale sedans or sports cars. The most time consuming effort for these is the painting.
  25. I wonder how many employees at the school use the electricity there to charge their personal cell phones or other devices. And I bet there's a microwave oven and/ or a fridge in the staff lunch/break rooms. What if one of the staff buys a plug in hybrid or full electric car?Would they be charged with theft for doing the same thing the parent did?I doubt it.To me that's the same same kind of "theft".
