Help with Tamiya TS-58
charlie8575 replied to Anderson_15_'s topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Grab some sprue and try the following: 1. White primer. 2. Gray primer. 3. Tamiya Dark blue, blue or French Blue spray paint, which might work well under the semi-transparent pearl blue. Try those and see which you like the best. Charlie Larkin -
Next up from Moebius ?
charlie8575 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes, please. In multiples. That Packard would actually make a good move, I think. Lots of customizing opportunities, as well as people who do stock. Don't like the Kaiser? Make a custom out of it. I've seen some pictures of these customized, not bad looking, but not my thing. I like them stock. A '61 Chrysler would be pretty cool, too. Forward-Look cars are popular with just about everyone. Waking up to a terrible cramp in my calf that wouldn't go away for nearly half an hour. Bad enough that I couldn't even move my leg without excruciating pain. Off to the grocery store in a few minutes to get some bananas, must be a little low on potassium. Charlie Larkin

Hi, Jeff. There's usually someone at the building by about 6:00-6:30; the meetings start nominally at 7:00 and usually run until 9:00 or 10:00. Also, as a heads-up, Classic Plastic, the other club in Masachusetts, has their show on October 5, I think (the first Sunday in October,) at the Elks in Lawrence. Very easy to get to- 93 to Exit 46 (River Rd.,) turn left off the ramp, go a couple of miles down, and the Elks is on the left. A car pool can be arranged in all likelihood with the guys in your neck of the woods. Charlie Larkin

That wood-grain is exquisite! Decal or really good painting? Charlie Larkin

Speaking as a former teacher, it makes me very happy to see when a kid puts down a magic box and actually does something with their hands. Get your friends in on the fun, they may find they like it. And yes, there's tremendous amounts of information and help here, look around, and don't be afraid to ask questions. You won't get a detention, I promise! Charlie Larkin

Hi, Jeff, and welcome from Marlborough. MassCar Model Club usually meets the 3rd Wednesday of most months (this month we had to change due to a facility availability issue,) at the Porter & Chester Institute on the Canton/Stoughton line, right off of 139. We have a couple of guys that live over your way in Weymouth, Braintree and Quincy. Feel free to come to any meeting. Turn left in the driveway, head to the auto-shop and enter through the door next to the garage, and head upstairs. Smell for the paint and glue. Charlie Larkin

Lyme....rotten illness to deal with; I've known a few people that have, and it's tough, but you can make it. Stay positive. Welcome back and enjoy. Modeling, is, if nothing else, a nice way to escape the electronic life, too. Charlie Larkin -
That's nicely done. As to prototypes, if it's a wagon, I'll probably buy it. Here's the ones that I think might actually sell. 1955-57 Pontiac Safari Olds Vista Cruiser, especially a second-generation one. I think a Forward-Look wagon would probably sell. The '63 Tempest wagon would be interesting, as a drag or regular car could be very easily replicated with a 2-in-1 kit. Any of the 1959-68 Chrysler Town & Countries, which were used on the Massachusetts Turnpike as patrol cars and turnpike ambulances. The Turnpike Authority chose the T&C because of the handling and the absolute, all-out performance from the 413s and later, 440s. I think a GM wood-bodied wagon might be a good seller, probably a Buick or Pontiac, as those generally seem to be the most popular with the collectors and are arguably the best-looking of them. A clamshell GM wagon of some kind. 1977-90 full-size GM wagon. Some mid-30s Ford V8 wagons might be well-received. An woodie Mopar of some kind from the early post-war errand, or Plymouth Westchester Suburban from the mid-late 1930s, a very rare, very high-value car popular with collectors of Chrysler products and wooden cars. A Studebaker Conestoga is a great-looking wagon and I think could lend itself very nicely to a lot of customs like the Starliner does. The Stude Wagonaire is a cool car and might sell just for the weird factor. We NEED new-tool '55 and '57 Nomads. The AMT molds are really starting to show their age, and well, do I have to elaborate on the Revell kits? A '57 Chevy 150 Handyman to go along with the Del Rio, as often suggested, would be a great companion piece. Maybe a Plymouth Custom Suburban, too? Charlie Larkin Fix that Nova wagon, as in make it the multi-choice build, and I'll buy at least one or two. The late '60s Mopar wagons are good-looking cars, and I'd grab one. Same with the '71 Satellite; Adam-12, LAPD, LAFD, LACFD, and a lot of other agencies used them, great boon for the emergency vehicle modeler. Set it up with optional front seats and the woodgrain, and you can do a Satellite Regent without too much trouble at all. Charlie Larkin I agree, Joe. The Cherokee is iconic, and deserves a high-quality model. Charlie Larkin

A couple of early birthday presents. I picked up a Bachmann RS-3 with sound in the Boston & Maine's classic maroon and gold scheme. And an unbuilt MPC '66 Dodge Monaco 500- looked complete, paid a little more than I would've liked, but it wasn't horribly over-priced, either. Now to pick a color...something that'll show off that really cool wicker-trimmed interior. I'm thinking something simple and classic, like white with a blue or red interior. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221812861418 Charlie Larkin

Modelhaus resin ' 61 Galaxie Starliner Finished 08/16

Looking very nice. I'd like to see if I can find my copy of Car Model magazine from 1998-99 that had the information about how to fix the AMT '61 interior from the '60. Wasn't too tough a job, but does take a little doing to saw the interior tub apart. That blue looks so nice on that car- perfect color for this. Charlie Larkin -
Actually, I think you did a nice job on the weathered look. It's not overdone at all, but rather looks like a car that was well-cared for and simply needs a little freshening. If you decide to use the Model Master Honduras Maroon, that comes out semi-gloss before applying the clear. It looks good for a weathered paint job that needs a good compounding to bring it back, if you want to go for a look that suggests that. Charlie Larkin

You practically stole my planned color scheme! I was actually planning on Colonial White/either Woodsmoke or Gunmetal Gray, with the red and white interior. Nice job on this, Al. I love your work. Also, interesting about the bumper guards/license plate lamps. You don't happen to recall how (or if) the license plate was illuminated? Charlie Larkin

Revell discontinued Del Rio wagon.
charlie8575 replied to kingiguana's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That would indeed be nice. Perhaps they'll get the message. I wouldn't be upset with an all-new '55 or '57 Nomad, either. Charlie Larkin -
Hmmm.... I could see either outcome as a distinct possibility. Paint opacity, chemical reaction or both, could be the problem we all encounter. And yes, I've seen it with heavy-bodied primers, as well. I've taken to painting, in many cases, red plastic with red/maroon paint directly. Fixes a lot of problems. Charlie Larkin

1/25 Revell Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon 2'n'1

That's it! This wasn't the stuff I saw, but it's very, very similar to the foil adhesive. Thanks for jogging my brain, Don. Charlie Larkin -

Actually, it was about a $200 credit, and I like the spoiler-less look on those Grand Prixs. It shows the curves of the design instead of hiding them. Charlie Larkin -

I know DRAG is using Cosmi-Chrome for some of their stuff. It's a little bit of a learning curve, but the results from what Jeff has said, have been quite good. Charlie Larkin -

I'm feeling lucky. After reading some of the molding nightmares you guys have had, mine came in pretty nicely. There's a touch of flash on a few parts that'll be clean up quickly with some sandpaper. I haven't started building yet, but I haven't seen anything at all in playing with parts and dry-fitting that'll cause me too many problems. Charlie Larkin
