Early Monogram wheels and tyres
peekay replied to peekay's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I saw those pics too but thought the wheels and tyres weren't shown clearly enough to post. But that is the kit I mean and thanks for posting the link. When I was 13 or so (I'm 61 now) I built the 36, 34 and Model A Phaeton Fords and that's where my styrene addiction started. In the last month, after a windfall, I've bought all three again. The Phaeton was on Swiss Ebay and a 10 minute drive away. I've been after a reasonably priced 36, my favourite kit of all time, for years and bought this on US Ebay a couple of weeks ago. I was the only bidder at $24. I thought there must be something wrong that only I couldn't see but it's near perfect, even the box. The Black Widow re-issue looks nice enough but I do miss the original instructions with the re-touched black and white photos. -

Thanks a lot for the offer Dan but I'm sorry, I can't post pictures! The wheels I'm talking about would be tan/brown in colour and have a whole in the center about the size of it's small hubcap. I should say at this point that I also own the complete 1962 issue of this kit but it's my holy grail and I want to keep it unbuilt. So I'm building the current issue as close to the original as possible. I now have the Black Widow kit and the tyres are big'n'littles, quite different from the 36 Ford. Probably from a new tool, as you suggest, Casey, and really quite nice. I also have a Green Hornet on the way and would bet my shirt it comes with the same tyres. -

Thanks a lot Glenn, much appreciated. A Black Widow (current re-issue) is on it's way accross the pond as we speak so I can soon check that out. I'll have to get a print catalogue from Replicas and Miniatures, been meaning to for a while. -
Does anyone cast the stock wheels and tyres from the original (1962) Monogram 1:24th 1936 Ford? Subsequent issues didn't have these and the current kit's whitewalls and steelies, although nice enough, aren't like the originals. The Modelhaus has everything you need in 1:25th but nothing in 1:24th.

This seems to be an "ANYONE-CAN-JUDGE-A-MODEL-CAR-CONTEST" story as well. Great model !

Great stuff, thanks for posting. -
Modelmaster enamels/lacquer thinner
peekay replied to peekay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks everybody for your input. -
I'm interested in Donn Yost's painting method (enamel with lacquer thinner) but can't locate Testors products in Switzerland. Has anyone tried Modelmaster enamels? Are they, in fact, the same? What about Humbrol? Also, does anyone know how lacquer thinner would be labeled in German or French? Nobody knows what I'm talking about here. (Junkman?)

Brett, you obviously had a great year. Hope 2012 is just as good for ya.

Did something crazy last night

The other day I saw someone picking their teeth with a - wait for it - toothpick!!! -
I'm really enjoying my (early) retirement - it was WORK that was boring. But I wish I'd had the foresight to stock up on kits for retirement when I was 15. Now they're collector items and cost 50 times what they did then.

Never would have thought of that. -
But to answer your question "when is there too many", - when you have to move house.
-
I would have 1500 too if it weren't for financial constraints. 10 years ago I sold half of my then 300 kits but I'm back to over 250 again. Quite a few of these are replacements for the ones I regretted selling. I've become quite comfortable with the fact that I'll never build them all and have learnt to like them equally in pieces in the box. In fact the boxes themselves are a big part of the appeal for me and often the deciding purchase-factor.

This one was too tough for me when I was 14 so it's great to see it done sooooo nicely!
-
Beautiful work! Subtle, yet stunning.

I never imagined this kit could be done so nicely.

5 model cars or trucks you wish were made.

BTW, If you think a topic has been done to death, just ignore it. -

57 Desoto Jaguar XJ6, XJ12, XJC (coupe) or Eventer. (The Eventer was a beautiful hand made station wagon). 58/60 T-Bird (new tool in 1.25th) 52/54 Lincoln Any Vista Cruiser I also think a new 50s wagon would sell well, eg. 57 Ford. -
Thanks Doc. I sent pictures of that one to family and friends who have no interest in model cars, just to show them it can be an art form. They were all very impressed.
-
That T-Bird should have been the box art - they'd have sold twice as many. Looking forward to more in 2012.
-
Great to see all those creations in one place Doc! Your WIPs were among the year's modeling highlights for me. (Even though I just build factory stock and the odd hot-rod myself). Keep the "eye-candy" coming in 2012. PS. Did you forget the 50 Chevy pick-up?

Something completely different.......1/12 Austin A35 Panel

Really love this one. Clean, precise work, great colours and very nostalgic - they were a common sight in New Zealand when I was growing up. -
Nice work! Your modifications to the doors really paid off.
