85 GMC Van 8/9/17 Fixed for Fotki
Foxer replied to Foxer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
OMG! This IS the last post to this story ... the van is 99.9% done!!!!!! .. really! So much thanks to everyone that has viewed, commented and encouraged me on this build. There were a lot of frustrations (one rear door is glued shut... the other works) but it was a totally fun build and my daughter is overjoyed! Right at the end I realized I never paid attention to the windshield wipers and the A-Team wipers were the worst I've seen an any kit ... they were half circle shapes with no definition. So, some PE wipers are on the way and will be done before final studio shots. It needs some light touch up and washes but for all practical purposes .. DONE! Here's the last photos in this thread just to see a whole van! -
Beautiful work here!

It's so good to have you starting another build that we can all enjoy and be amazed over, Ken! I love the body on this one. Since I'm an engineer, I guess I do the scale math. Ken states the wheelbase ia 10'3" or 123" ... if in American feet. With a 6" wheelbase on the model that comes out to 123/6 = 20.5 or 1/20.5 scale.

Replicating my 1:1 Chevy HHR (using RMR's new resin)

I like seeing something different going on. Even better when you have a real one sitting there. Since I'm acronym challenged, could you spell out who RMR is and even a link -
Old Custom Tyme- Valiant Pickup

All I can say is "Wow!" It warms my heart that someone saw this in their mind and tried it ... this is what this hobby is all about! -
This thread sure underscores why the '32 Ford became the icon it is. ... and what great, creative builders there are here!

This is an amazing scene! All the little details are models in themselves. I do like the last scene with the wood car and dad helping out .. and the motorcycle filling out the back area.

Thanks for the comments on this with tiny photos! I was a AMT '40 Coupe and I do have a kit I was thinking of recreating my build from 1962! I have one 13" reversed rim and tire also .. ehhe. I know I used Cushenbery's Matador as inspiration on this (headlights and fender scoop) but not sure a rebuild will ever happen. It would be fun!.

I like seeing people building their 1:1 vehicles. There's always so many little details the change and get right. Nice work on the dash bumper! -

OK ... this WIP will NOT die! The left rear door hinges came loose once more and the door was epoxied closed! I proceeded to attach all the side lights, mirrors and antenna. All interior pieces were also glued. The rear bumper had to be in place to spread the rear body for door spacing and I put some super glue on it this time thinking it was the last time ... forgetting that the body needed to be spread even more to allow the chassis to be put in place. During that attempted operation the right door lower hings popped (!) and the chassis wouldn't go in. So, the glue was dissolved and the bumper removed. The left bumper bin broke off during removal and I have to fabricate a new pin from brass and aluminum rod/tubes. This is done now as photos below show. Now, it's just the door hinge glue ... hopefully this goes without the top hinge coming loose. Another day for the epoxy to cure and the chassis goes in and it's just paint touchup . I HOPE! I think this just might make it to NNL East this year!!!! -
Many do use Elmer's glue to test fit because it's removable with water. I use Microscale Micro Liquitape as it remains tacky and the parts can be taken apart and restuck.

I feel like I may have wasted my money on the PE set because the Tamiya kit is THAT good. The kit has a PE fret with all the logos already. The grills are cast with the openings open and look better than the multi-piece PE grill. I'll work up more comments once I start the build WIP here.

This hood and old slide scan is all that's left of a '40 Ford Sedan I entered in a local hobby shop contest in 1962 when I was 16. It won the Custom class and only lost best in show because it was said to be "unroadable". whatever that meant. It did scale out to be only 48" high after the chop, channel and section on 13" wheels! The placing surprised me as the Candy Green paint was a disaster with dark blobs all over it.

3-D Printing is now affordable
Foxer replied to Darren B's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In general a 3D object made for a video game will be optimized for a few faces possible and still end up looking good. It's more a matted of the video card than looking good to a modeler. Something you'd want to print with your new 3D printer would have a many faces as you could get.
