Not to hijack the thread, but there has been some talk about having an automated translator on this forum. Once upon a time, the Danbury Mint made a diecast 1:24 Boston Whaler 13-footer with a Mercury outboard, circa 1959-60. Only available now on eBay or other places. Pricey, at about $120. For newer boats (1990s), you could adapt a Corvette LT-1 for a MerCruiser sterndrive (I/O), since that was the base engine. -

That is ultra-cool and the muted orange trim seems to work much better than my example. And, from what I can see, the top of the bonnet is polished metal. That would look great, except for the green interior. (On the other hand, the Gatsby car is an older Phantom I, and I haven't seen polished metal bonnets on the later Phantom IIs.) -
That's a virtuoso performance. Reminds me of a Le Mans "art car." And actually, I think it works better on a coupe than the cabrio.

This isn't exactly cigarette cream, but I think the combination sounds like it would work. -
This is the same person who posted a lotus cookie recipe in manta69's 1/8 Lotus 25 thread.

What photo file format are you trying to upload to Photobucket? (jpeg/jpg/pdf/png, etc?) Out of these, Photobucket does not support pdf. Here's info from another site: The heart of Photobucket's service is digital image storage. But images can come in many sizes and file types. Photobucket supports the following image file formats: * Graphics interchange format (.gif) * Joint Photographic Experts Group files (.jpg) * Portable network graphics files (.png) * Bitmap files (.bmp) -
As I mentioned, I had to follow the links for it to dawn on me, since you didn't clarify it in the title or the thread. What are you talking about?
-
Grrr. Aargh. Errrr.. well, okay. (though the humor is lost on me).
-
And this has what to do with model car building....? I thought you were talking about scale aftermarket parts and I wasted my time following the links. Really irritating, and it doesn't belong here. There's also another thread going on about what GPS unit to buy. If I want information about 1:1 parts, I know plenty of places to look, and I come here for entirely different reasons.

To create or not to create?
sjordan2 replied to Jeff Sauber's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I might add that, based on the traffic at Scale Auto, there is a certain demand for conversations related to other models. Combining Motorcycles with Other Models, they have a current inventory of over 2,000 threads with over 20,000 responses. While this is an average of 1/3 the traffic of any one of the 7 other car type subjects,(not including news/techniques/etc), and though their structure is quite different, it's reasonably substantial, even though these topics have been around for a while. Of course, as publisher of Fine Scale Modeling, Kalmbach has a vested interest in expanding the site's model subjects. That said, I look at the poll numbers above and I wonder why nearly half of the voters don't want to add this category. Is this a case of Too Much Information? -
To create or not to create?
sjordan2 replied to Jeff Sauber's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with all of that, as long as other types of models were usually presented with "how I did what I did" descriptions or Work in Progress journals – painting techniques & materials, aftermarket sources for things like rivets, etc., with brand names and other information of use to all modelers. At the very least, having that kind of forum would stimulate dialogue and glean specific information from experts on other subjects. It would hopefully broaden the scope of our "Tips, Tricks & Tutorial" section. Without that, I think there would be quite a drop-off in interest here. -

http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12248 This details how to download/upload your photos from your camera, then use a service such as Photobucket (recommended for its brain-dead simplicity for people like me) for posting your photos. Then it's as easy as copying the Photobucket image code and pasting it in your post. -

Here's the 1/8 Pocher Star of India by a modeler named Laurent Guy, as found in the Rolls gallery at modelmotorcars.com. Can't find any information on how he achieved this finish. As for the gold/black combination, this '35 Saloon doesn't look too bad as long as it's a light gold. Bear in mind that the wheels/discs should be black, not the side panel color, to be authentic. On another note for anyone who's interested, a Gunze Sangyo 1/16 Phantom III has just been listed on eBay: http://bit.ly/bsRM3m There are others available there, too. -

That's the Rajkot "Star of India"; There are a couple of good kits out there (Italeri 1/24 and Pocher 1/8), but of all the builds of this car, I've only seen one that managed to pull off the reflective polished metal look. It's pretty impressive when done right, though I've never liked the pumpkin/saffron color. -

This is the original car that was the basis for the 1/16 Gunze Sangyo/Revell/Anmark/Academy Phantom III. Personally, I don't think gold is very successful. -

Scratchbuilding vs. Kitbashing

If you've been following Bill Wowk's Camaro and the work of Gerald Wingrove, you know what amazing skill it takes to build something from the ground up. If you haven't been following this one, here's another thread of mind-boggling scratch building in progress – a 1/8 GT 40. http://www.scalemotorcars.com/forum/large-scale-cars/6477-1-8-gt40-mk1-ford-scratchbuilt-why-not.html -

Nothing wrong with black and yellow, and this doesn't look like riff-raff to me (it was the star of the movie, "The Yellow Rolls-Royce") What would your coach paint technique be? PS: I just found a very interesting article at the RREC site on historic color schemes, materials and finishes. Very fascinating. http://www.rrec.org.uk/Cars/Coachwork/Colour_Schemes.php -
Packaging for mailing
sjordan2 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
All of the above are correct. I would also recommend adding small-bubble bubble wrap inside the kit to keep parts from moving around. One of the most important parts of this packing depends a lot on the kit; kits at this size tend not to have the kind of sturdy boxing you find on smaller scales and it's very easy for kits to get slightly crushed and arrive with broken A pillars on the body. Therefore, I additionally recommend packing the body with a certain amount of support inside the shell. It's not a huge deal, and you can get away with outer boxing that's not that much larger than the kit box, but the larger the outer box and the more the packing material the better. I say all this from my experience as a recipient, and I've seen what works and what doesn't.
