1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible
sjordan2 replied to Mr. Can Am Garage's topic in Model Cars
This is a truly beautiful piece of work. Let me ask you this – my biggest gripe about this hobby is the metallic paint available, which to my eyes always has too much prominent metalflake for the scale, yet this build looks just right. Can you tell me more about the paint? -
MGB "ride height"
sjordan2 replied to Matt Bacon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Unless someone here has the exact answer, I think you just need to eyeball it. It needs to look right based on your opinion. As you probably know, to meet U.S. DOT standards issued at the time, the rubber bumper version was developed for this market and resulted in a body that had to sit at a very unappealing height on the chassis. (Part of the same wave of safety correctness that resulted in the elimination of plexi headlight covers from many European cars such as the XKE and Alfa Duetto, plus the end of eared knock-off spinners for wire wheels.) My next-door neighbor just sold his rubber-bumper MGB a couple of weeks ago, the suspension of which had been converted from the U.S. requirement to something more according to the original versions. A good way to determine what you want would be to search Google images; one thing I have done for other kits is to print out a straight-on side shot of a 1:1 car at the same length as a picture of the kit, then compare them to determine what needed to be done. This process has shown me, for example, that the 1:12 Mercedes Gullwing has an excellent overall shape but the doors on the kit aren't nearly wide enough, and the wheel well shape and the roof height on the 1:12 Ferrari 275 GTB are totally wrong (among many other problems with this kit). -
The first one looks perfect for the morning commute. (And a great job on all of them.)

That pearl blue is my choice for my Maserati 3500 GTi. Pearls seem so much more scale-correct than most metallics. Just wish there were more of them in mainstream colors.

bad eyesight lowering my standards (GRRRR)

A bit of note about car tires in the early years
sjordan2 replied to Art Anderson's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks so much for taking this discussion to a new, dedicated thread. There are many of us on this board, and others, who are interested in these brass-era cars and have many questions relating to subjects like this. When we search for visual reference on vintage and classic cars, it's virtually impossible for anyone but experts to know what's original or the product of a later restoration. -

Oooohh, thanks. Blue hits MY comfy button. -

Okaaayyy...so where's the IP Board stuff? I'm on Mac and I don't know where any of that is, if that makes a difference. I would like to see a variation in colors here. -

Is that a real thing or a bit of humor? Where's the "comfy" box? -
Welcome to the board. You came just in time to get a bit overshadowed by a radical departure from the previous look of the place that just happened this afternoon, but we're glad to have you here. If you have any builds to show us, we'd love to see them.

The new design looks great. About the chat room... is this sort of like a members' café where fellow modelers can come and talk about the kind of useless stuff that tends to take other threads in strange directions, like hot British schoolteachers in black leather? That would be cool. I always told my daughter that she could never join a chat room because things get weird there...but this could be enticing.

Well, I like the look.

The Elusive 1904 Knox Waterless Truck project
sjordan2 replied to Art Anderson's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Is this the same kit as the Airfix? EDIT: Oops – sorry, Art, I didn't mean to hijack this thread. I'll bring it up when I get into the Stutz. Want to see more on your water truck. -
This was an extremely popular feature on the Scale Auto forum until they banned it (it wasn't specifically about model cars). Give it time, it's fun.

The Elusive 1904 Knox Waterless Truck project
sjordan2 replied to Art Anderson's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yup, I saw "The Wings of Eagles" first-run in the theaters when I was a kid, too (I was 10), and to me the Stutz was the star of the show. I still have the original Dell comic book (awesome artwork by Alex Toth) and the movie is among my John Wayne collection DVDs. Is the AMT/Ertl version the same kit that was issued in relation to the George Barris replica for the "Bearcats" TV series? As for tires, was the "Nonskid" tread contemporary and common with those cars or is it a later issue? -

sjordan2 replied to Art Anderson's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Wow. That's professional model building. But should I put white or black tires on my 1914 Stutz? My build will be based on the Bearcat from the John Wayne movie, "The Wings of Eagles." I've found updated pictures of the same car since the movie, but there's no telling what's original or updated. Further, since the 1/16 Bearcat kit is a curbside, I'm trying to determine how to blend that with the Lindberg racer, which has full engine detail. But perhaps that's for another thread, and I can get back to you later on this subject. -

This is going to be great. Is there something here about white tires on the front and black on the rear? I assume it's a work in progress. Also, what color/process are you using to make the front tires white, and what did you start out with? On that subject, what timeline do you suggest for the transition from white tires to those with carbon black? I'm trying to determine whether my 1914 Stutz Bearcat should have white or black tires. -
Very cool, nicely done, and it's a pleasure to see something that doesn't show up very often. Have you thought of doing this as a road car? Or doing a larger scale kit? That would be very good, too.

Outstanding craftsmanship and fine photography. This is why I come here.

Thanks very much for a clearly described and well-illustrated tutorial. I haven't worked with resin, but I now I have important information in my reservoir. It was particularly good to see your comparisons between plastic and resin. This is the way a tutorial should be.

Outstanding piece of work all around. I'm not familiar with Charlie Rowley's decals. Do you have more information?

Beautiful build and a great and unusual choice of colors – a blingy white paint job with serious black wheels. Love it.

You might inquire at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center – I asked for information about a 1928 SS, and even though they couldn't find the answer, they got back to me in a few days. Astonishingly enough, they said they have very little original documentation on prewar Mercedes. I think there was a factory fire or something. They did e-mail me a basic specification sheet, though.
