Solvaset - Where to order from
Dave Van replied to hooterville75's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Vote for Solvaset here. To add to Art's good post.......... Walter's was the first to offer decal setting fluid. They were also one of the very first decal manufactures for the hobby industry. Walther's has been in business since 1932 and has always served the hobby field with major support of model railroading. They started their decal business in the late 1930's! So they have some experience with decals and in fact it's how I learned to apply decals from the instructions in their decal catalog. (they had so many decals it had it's own catalog) Sadly today Walthers no longer has a decal catalog and only has what's left of NOS. But using the method they taught me back in the 1960's I stick with what works. More decal history than you ever wanted..... PS....you can mail order it direct or most hobby shops with trains carry it. -
Real or not......COOL!!!!

Mainly because once you squeeze into the seat...no room for window winder handles!!!! -
Very nice work!!! Are we the only two with sealed 69 Ambassador kits!?!?!? I have yet to get the guts to open mine. I am an AMC guy but paid $9 for my kit.....thought I'd flip it....but can't let it go. Thanks for the build....at least I know what the kit looks like!!!

"Low-tus" Europa Special... final assembly!
Dave Van replied to jaymcminn's topic in WIP: Model Cars
My brother in law had a Europa John Player SPL black and gold. He put gold mini-lites on it. GREAT looking car, fantastic to drive...a bit quirky.....the cars were hand built and when you worked on them you could see hand welds and hammer marks on the chassis!! Bodies were hand laid glass. Not a car I'd want to get in a crash with....the wishbone chassis had almost ZERO side protection for passengers. That and the car ATE power window motors!! -

Owning 2 AMC's now and having owned MANY others......I am happy. True....a early model would be good....but in talking with R2 it may happen if we buy this one....like other 70's era kits sitting in the vault. AMC was on the verge of breaking out......they had a mini van in the design stage that might mean we would have AMC today and NOT Chrysler !!!! And what they did with no cash and using parts bin design is amazing! (Javelin used the same glass and door skins from 68 to 74 but you can't really tell!!!) -
Rattle Cans - who still uses them?
Dave Van replied to tiking's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have two decent air brushes.........cans about 90% of the time....vs 10% for air brush.......cans (Tamiya) have gotten so good and me so lazy is why! -
Cobra Daytona Coupe in plastic.
Dave Van replied to Steve D.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm NOT Moebius.....but I did stay at a Red Roof last week!!!!! I do know the folks at Moebius. I have the privilege of working with them on some items. I do at artwork for the NASCAR race car kits and I help on product development some. Look at what Moebius has produced so far. Each kit has a number of options built into it. Many more than you may think. A Cobra coupe is WAY to limited in popularity and it the ability to be the basis of a family of kits based off the tool. Like I said...I ain't Moebius....and am speaking for myself. But I don't see it any time soon. It does not fit their philosophy at this time. Someday....I'd not say never......but I'll not sit waiting for it. Just IMHO only! -
WOW!!!! 2 thumbs up from an owner of 2 real AMC's!!! NICE

Dear AMT/ERTL

Silver as a barrier. Works 100% for me. The color molded kits were for mass merchandisers like chain craft stores. Not for fringe like us. -
mom and pop vs. big hobby shop
Dave Van replied to Q tip's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Customer service is more a factor than big chain stores or the internet. My local hobby shop, 2.5 hours away, thrives because they have people that know what they sell and always ask if they can help. He does have decent prices and that helps......but people with sales skills are vital. -
First off....very nice work!!! And I too agree....this kit, while not state of the art we expect today, it is far from the dog some claimed. I built my Booth car the week the kit came out. I was able to tuck the wheels and tires under the body by shortening the axle stubs on the wheels backs and a very slight trim of the rear axle. Up front I just tucked them in as there is no real front suspension. A cool little kit that I want to build more versions. The car did well in the IMSA Kelly Girl series and some famous modified drivers used Gremlin bodies too.

Many ARII kits are reissues from other Asian manufactures. So the kits vary wildly. From very basic 'motorized' kits to decent full kits. Any kit in question??

Well...thanks for the input. I have a bunch at the print, not the gasser decals, but now it's time to start these. I'll post when I can. The others are available from Gopher Racing decals. Spotlight Hobbies, Model Roundup and others carry them Thanks

A hard fast answer you will not get on model cars being tooled now. The model companies are all very small companies and this kind of info is not usually public. It's a lot!! But the total cost of research, planning, drawings in 2-D and then 3-D, tooling samples and then molds. But it doesn't end there. Moebius had to almost scrap the original Hudson mold as the green house was wrong....the bad one wasn't free! So the total cost will be a combination of all that. More than you think...let's leave it as that.

Very cool....I like such projects!!! I can see how this could be made as a laser kit like my Dog Catcher kit.....
