MACK DM600 Builders kit
Old Buckaroo replied to Rigzndiesel's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I haven't done any curved semi windshields but a multitude of curved automotive with clear acetate. (Im lazy and hate polishing out scratches) I will use a note-card trimmed roughly to fit on the inside to make a pattern, draw along the inside frame with a mechanical pencil if possible. One the pattern is drawn enlarge it - 3 to 4 mm Is what I start with. Once you have the pattern fitted with a inside lip being big enough for a gluing ridge transfer to the acetate. Here is the secret. "Aleenes Original Tacky Glue" it is a quick drying white glue that will dry clear. Start at a pillar post and work your way around making a small bead with a or little dots by using a toothpick for an aplicator. If you get a little out side of the frame a damp q-tip will clean it off. Once attached you can go back around with same glue and seal all the edges. Don't be discouraged sometimes it takes more then once to get it right Hope that makes sense I forgot - Tamiya tape works really well for holding the windshield in place (center) to get you aligned and started on the glue process. -
What do you drive?

Jeff that is a fine looking Mack, too bad about the MIA windshield. Put a feeler out in the "wanted" section of the forum. I would recommend sourcing some clear acetate sheet or a piece of clear packaging (you know that stuff you can never get into) and make one. Even with that curve it should not be too hard with persistence. Another tip I will share with you - on flat surfaces that you want to put a decal on brush on a little "Future Floor Wax" although the name has changed to Pledge floor care about the size of the decal and let dry, that ghosting of the clear decal paper wont be there. -
Shane - your frame looks square and that is a good start. What I would have given for a hobby mat with square grids when I was a teen building trucks. Keep at it, this is a sharp looking truck to model. I think I have read every post on this forum pertaining to the AMT Freightliner. Well I feel I am an expert now on all the quirks and should order one

Nice work & build up Roger, it is amazing how some of these projects fight you the whole way. Belated congratulations on the baby I have been having a heck of a time finding front tires also - seems like every kit I check has those blasted Good Year Poly Glass in them.

Awesome truck to build. Looks really great and I wouldn't worry about those turbo seams. The factory doesn't . -
Thanks guys, I am still plugging away on this. It the little things that burn up the bench time and trying to remember my " great ideas" from several years back is taking the most time. Roger old friend - Glad to see you stopping by.

Yes x 2 , Jim is a Great guy to deal with !

Howdy Mark, I can relate to your change of subject. I used "Future" on aircraft models for a decal base and to make canopys crystal clear. For my Automotive finishes I really liked the clear coat marketed by "Boyds" paints but it is really hard to find anymore. Looking forward to seeing your builds.

Russel I am impressed, I remember seeing your Drill rig as my older brother (supplier of most magazines) kept that one as he had plans to build a oil field "work over rig" -

Wow That is one beastly truck. That is some really talented modeling you have done on this project. I can hear that pto drive winch gouging right into gear just by looking at it. -

"Johnny Wheels Trucking " that is great ! To bad you were not home you might of scored a ballcap or jacket.. Force - Thank you for that much appreciated information on the kits and conversions. Ok you class 8 experts, can anyone recognize the year and model of this White Freightliner ? That is what happened to me as a teen driving on the Ranch like "Bo Duke" on muddy roads. It would be nice to find a kit to build up like the old Ranch Semi. -

Jeff - that is some really nice work, and a great kit. It is good to see something built sporting "Daytons" PS - I use to chase cows all over that part of the country you live in. I remember a Coop, convenience store, watering hole and about 20 houses. -

Oh man - I had forgotten about the bingo cards, I was guilty of sending them off too. I kept the mailbox at the ranch full of brochures.. I dont remember Overdrive though, the"lady's" did not interest me at that time of my life. They still had cooties or some such ! Brinx that was a big sticker , I forgot where I stuck mine. -

I haven't built a truck in years, are there still W-925 kits available on the market ? Sure would like to build a "Movin On" clone now that I am older and a better modeler. I checked ebay for a BJ McKay Aerodyne and got scared away -
Wow - that is really something. If you had this car in a different background I would swear it is real. Very Nice Work !
-
I like all of them - Is the center Nova the "Old Pro" or the later Revell release ? Nothing wrong with it not being plumbed. Sometimes less is more. Nice builds !

Howdy, Growing up in the late '70's there use to be the best magazines called "Owner Operator" . I started building truck models around the age of 15 and was not happy with out of the box builds. These old magazines had pics of all sorts from interior to engine pics. If you were real lucky sometimes there was a foldout add that featured a truck and you could skillfully cut out the gauges to use in a model. To top it off there was a section dedicated to just model trucks. I spent hrs at the local truckstop with my old 110 camera taking pics of those Highway cadillac's. I had a fair size collection of the magazines until my sister ratted me out for having "junior playboys" due to the pretty ladies often featured with the trucks. So I was made to get rid of them Those were the days, and what I wouldn't give to get my hands on another BJ McKay or Movin On KW. Anybody else remember those old magazines ?
