Some may disagree with this method of building, but one way to minimize that is to build all of your assemblies-----test fit everything on the body to a T-----and then paint and BMF the body. It'll also give you a good handle on how to handle the body in final assembly. I do this especially where there's any opening of panels involved, or any big body mods. Handling is minimized as you're making sure the body will fit over the interior and chassis with no issues, and you don't run into any hiccups after everything's all painted, polished, and BMF'd.

Gotta agree with Harry here. I've been using BMF since the late '80's and have never had to seal it either. The model you see in my sig. was built in 1998-99, and the BMF is still as bright as when I finished it up 10 years ago. If the foil is not sticking, it's more than likely a problem with the surface (excessive handling before applying, over bare plastic, etc.) or the sheet is simply bad in which BMF Co. has been addressing that very well lately. I've not had to keep the BMF in the fridge either............I can remember using a sheet in the mid '90's that I had bought in the late '80's, and the adhesive was as strong as ever.

Here are some pics of an absolutely gorgeous '71 Olds made by Juha Airio of Finland! I don't know if he made this on his own or used the AAM kit. I love how he does his glass..............nice and clean with clear stencil sheet. Just the way I like it!

I broke my corvette
MrObsessive replied to Corvette.Jeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had a 3:54 axle in my '69 AMX (390 C.I., 4spd Manual) and it was a very lively performer with that setup! (just ask some mid year Sting Ray owners! ) The axle in your 'Vette looks a lot like what happened to my beloved '65 Volvo P1800. It was making a "clinking" noise (very subtle at first) which I kept ignoring. I eventually took it to the Volvo dealer and they wanted $1500 (!! ) to fix it! One day I went out to move the car because they were street cleaning that day..............wouldn't move forwards or backwards. I ended up selling the car-------I wish I hadn't looking back as they're as scarce as hens teeth now! -
This is turning out Beautiful!!................Gorgeous paint as well! I love the mix of new with the old! Is that an Irish Setter with you in your Avatar? We had one when I was a teen living at home many years ago. Boy she was an ACTIVE dog!!

Nice work going there Kevin! It is good to step out of your usual builds once in a while-------------I need to do that soon as builder burnout can set in on me quite quickly! Keep it going!

Revell's plastic
MrObsessive replied to mr moto's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Manuel, not having built any of the new Revell kits in a while, (last one was the '06 Magnum a couple years ago) I'd err on the side of caution and barrier the plastic before I did any painting. If the plastic is of a cheaper grade that I think it is, I can't see Revell taking a step back and spending more money for better plastic in light of what costs are today. Some may disagree (including Revell) that the plastic is no different than it was from years ago. But I can see the difference in the plastic itself compared to say 10 years ago. -
Beautiful, Gorgeous, Classic!! I'd be hard pressed to let it go!

Modeller evicted
MrObsessive replied to lordairgtar's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What a SAD, SAD story!! Without knowing all the details, I hope all is well with him to this point. Having a disability and then have your home gone out from under you------I'm not sure how I'd deal with it. -
WOW!!!!! this is very rare!
MrObsessive replied to B_rad88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've only ever seen one tornado here in Central PA, and that was back in '96. It didn't last long, but it did some damage to a few buildings on a busy road. We don't get them here very often thank goodness as I sleep during the day, (from about noon to 7pm) and that's when they seem to be at their peak. I do have the Weather Channel on my laptop so this time of year, I'll leave the laptop open while I'm asleep in case there's any severe storm warnings. The Weather Channel sounds a big thunderclap in case a severe storm warning pops up on their radar for my area. That thunderclap will wake me up! -
Cruz, if you really want to pysche 'em out, stick an RX-7 rotary in there! I thought I read somewhere that the Vega was originally supposed to get a rotary, but Chevy decided on the 4 banger instead, as the rotary wasn't quite efficient enough for GM in those days. Just a thought!

Johan quickly comes to mind, but they went defunct quite some time ago-------check eBay but bring lots of dough as some can get quite pricey. You've got Fujimi out there too as they've done some beautiful vintage Ferrari's.

1968 Mustang Coupe
MrObsessive replied to Ryan Quantz's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Why yes I did! It's crude by my standards today as I made this one in 1996 and it's one of the first body conversions I did. Skills have gotten a lot better since then, and I've learned how to use the '66 body to make a more accurate '68 Green Hornet this time around. I've got all the parts to do the car, correct wheels from GMP, correct decals from Keith Marks, and much better detailed pics of the engine and that IRS setup. -

1968 Mustang Coupe
MrObsessive replied to Ryan Quantz's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Must be some mind readers here! 'Cuz that car is a possible next build! Actually I want to do the "Green Hornet"--------the one off Shelby that would have been a notchback Shelby coupe production model had Ford saw fit. I too being "Mr. Obsessive", notice some things about that casting I would change, but I'm only going by one pic and not seeing it in 3D. -
Who Likes 69-72 Chevelle Wagons
MrObsessive replied to dencon's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
That master looks pretty good.........the only change I would make if at all possible, is to make the C pillar about 1-3 scale inches thicker per the 1:1. I too would love to see a '68-'72 Olds Cutlass Vista wagon! I always thought they were pretty sharp with the raised roof and glass section. -
The Sky was a derivative off the Solstice, taking styling cues from the Vauxhall VX Lightning show car a number of years ago. The platform (Kappa) was solely done by GM for use in the Solstice and then to the Sky to spread costs around. The Astra's fate was sealed when it debuted with too high a price tag which was not very "Saturn like" for a compact car. I could see the Sky end up as a cheaper alternative to the 'Vette, but I'm not holding my breath. Not to mention you couldn't get the regular Astra sedan which is sold in other markets...............Hatchbacks don't do well here in the states. People look at them as too utilitarian including me. The Vue (not sure about the Aura) is also not an original Saturn, yet they want to keep that one. It's based on another platform from overseas. The Outlook is based on a new crossover platform which underpins the Buick Enclave, as well as the GMC Acadia. The last really original Saturn was probably my Ion which they quit making two years ago for whatever reason. Some derided the fiberglass/aluminum construction, but the car was actually selling quite well compared to other GM small cars as of late '06 early '07. By April '07, GM pulled the plug. Typical.

Yeah, I read that on another Automotive forum. They're keeping everything 'cept the Astra and the Sky. 'Tis a shame because those were the only two cars I really liked in the whole lineup. The others weren't bad, just a bit too ordinary for my likes. Hopefully the Astra and Sky can find a home elsewhere...............one in my driveway would be nice for starters! I especially was hoping for an Astra with that cool panaramic windshield that won't make it over here now. I hope also my local dealer sticks around with their GREAT service! I have an Ion Coupe and each time I take it in for routine service, they wash and wax the car and vacuum the inside. They also don't BS me with stuff the car doesn't need----------------too many other dealers have shot themselves in the foot pulling that nonsense.

Ditto along with everyone else Bob! Beautiful, fantastic save! Excellent foiling job BTW! Mercury couldn't have did better than that in '60!

Real or Model #92 FINISHED!
MrObsessive replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Hehehe! It makes it nice and easy when you've got pics of this very car on your hard drive! That's why I could say absolutely nothing! Here's some more pics of this beautiful M1! -
Cruz, another killer project! I say go with the last set you posted..............A bright orange would be nice for this style of car! Whatever engine you choose Bro has to be better than the oil leaking one Chevy used. I can't remember the last time I've seen an original running! I've always wondered if that car was meant to be a new body style Corvair had Chevy continued that model. The vents in the rear, the taillights, the roofline, all of it kinda says Corvair to me.
