If I were building it, the answer would be a definite YES! Those are next to impossible to find on eBay or anywhere else for that matter, and they can go for super mega $$$$$ in pristine shape! The fact he got a box in decent shape makes it that much nicer! As they say, they don't make 'em like they used to-------the chances of us older guys seeing a new kit of a '62 Chrysler ragtop are Slim and None, and Slim left town!

Looking for Sniper model from R&R Resin
MrObsessive replied to Drago's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I've talked to Ray personally in the past and George is right..............Ray's been having a number of health problems over the years. He doesn't do nearly as many shows as he used to and he no longer sells out of his home. Best bet would be if Steve from Star Models can maybe get Ray to cast one for you, or keep checking eBay. I gotta admit, that's a pretty unusual subject--------I don't think it was a hot seller, but I could be wrong. There's a seller on eBay that goes by the handle "miteymouse". He sells quite a few R&R models, in fact I just checked on my sellers list and he doesn't have the model you want. Maybe you can also drop him a line and he might be able to put in a request for the Sniper. Hope this helps! -
Real or Model #51 FINISHED!
MrObsessive replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Hey! That faster rake D pillar DOES look better! I've always wondered if GM used the same rear roof sections from the '55-57 Nomad for their '57-'58 Olds and Buick four door wagons. Seems as though they use a similar flip up rear window section and rear curvature------just different ribbing on the roof section itself. I can see the leading edge of the C pillar shape where the rear windows may have interchanged with the standard four door hardtops.........just graft on the rear roof section from the Nomad and you've got a NICE wagon! -
Guys, what's behind all of this is the fact that in a couple years, Ebay as well as other online auction sites will be required to report to the IRS anyone making more than $10,000 in sales a year. Here's the story on the whole hubbub. This new provision was very cleverly embedded in the Housing Reform Act that was passed into law by the President recently. What better way to report that to the feds if you own the company that takes the transaction and with a couple key strokes, find out what someone earned in the past year? Personally, I won't buy unless the seller takes PayPal, but I can see sellers getting irritated being forced to sign up for it if they don't choose to do so. .......................And please, this is just fact, I don't want this to turn into a political skunk sprayer.

"A plucked chicken!!" That's what Chrysler stylists said and griped about when they were told to get rid of the 1960-61 tailfins...........to me it still has fins, but not as pointy and flamboyant as the previous model year. Great save Ed! That one was definitely worth restoring, as they're real tough to find! If you can't find glass, you may want to try making one with Squadron Thermoform. Take the original glass, back it with something on a hard surface, heat the Thermoform on a candle, and pull over your original. I'd buy a couple packs if you want to try it, as it takes a little practice, but it's not hard at all. I believe the glass that Modelhaus sells is for a Johan as they also make the windshield frames-----it wouldn't hurt to drop them a line to find out if you don't want to go the Thermoform route.

Real or Model #51 FINISHED!
MrObsessive replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Wow, two in a row! Once again the bumper bolts, and particularly the tinted glass were giveaways------it fits almost too well if it were a model. Yes R&R does a model of this one, but I ain't attemptin' it! I've got their '58 Olds Fiesta wagon-----that one's a lot better, but still needs work to make nice. Juha Airio did one years ago, and it's the nicest version I've seen yet of those '57-'58 hardtop wagons! He started I think with the R&R, but had to redo the chassis and interior, and of course the glass, because they are just soooooo bad! Pics courtesy of Rik Hoving's Fotki.............. Caballero's are as scarce as hen's teeth these days.............a very classy wagon in it's day, especially in hardtop form! -
Since they're in Great Britain, they use British Pounds. When I've bought things overseas (Great Britain or Europe), I use this site for converting dollars to pounds or Euros.........it gives you the current rate for the day. If I were ordering from them, I'd give 'em a ring on the phone and use my credit card-------true it costs a bit to call overseas (I've done it on my cellphone) but if you mail it, it can take a long time 'til it gets there! I'm not so sure about sending a money order overseas the way things are now. I'd also ask if you could send the money via PayPal........if they've got an email addy, they can receive money. HTH!

I was just getting into building around 18 so he's got a great start! Keep up the good work Brendan!............As Izzy said keep your models in a safe place-----I didn't do that and now don't have any of the models when I started building nearly 30 years ago.

Paint Strippers - What to Use?
MrObsessive replied to pbj59's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've found ELO (Easy Lift Off) to be great for stripping paint. Most good hobby shops should have it. It smells (and feels) like brake fluid-------but brake fluid may be harsh on styrene (and deadly to resin!) so it's got to be something else. I used it when I had to repaint the Ford I'm working on.........only drawback though, is if you've got any putty work, kiss it goodbye as it'll break that right up! Brush it on, let it sit for a couple hours, and the paint'll start to lift with ease! HTH! -
Has anybody heard of Draggin Plastic?
MrObsessive replied to Blu_Hawke's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Thanks for the heads up guys! I had noticed those poverty caps too and was thinking about getting 'em! I swear folks stare at the ceiling at midnight------------beating the back of their hands against the headboard, wondering how to beat you and I out of our money! -
Okay-------Most likely that is a hot acrylic enamel/lacquer clear. Lacquers don't like to be sprayed over anything else but other lacquers. But you can spray acrylic enamels clears over lacquer because they aren't so hot. Likewise hobby enamel clears can be sprayed over just about anything. But it seems that reaction should have been immediate------how long ago did you paint the car? Might be the only solution would be to take the car apart, strip it, then repaint.

If you've got a good train shop near you, check out what's known as "MV lenses". Train guy's use 'em for reflectors and such---------the only drawback is they don't have the fine lines that most sealed beam headlights have. Here's a pic of my Daytona Charger....I wanted the flip up headlights and didn't want to raid the parts box for dual quad lights............. Hope this helps!
-
Ouch!! What kind of paint/clear did you use? The clearcoat dries faster than the color coats--------because the previous coats are still shrinking this can lead to the cracks in the topcoat/clearcoat. I ran into this problem years ago with Tamiya Acrylics, using their clearcoat over their water based acrylic colors ALWAYS led to cracking about a month or so down the road!

If I were building a hardtop Mustang, I'd probably start with the AMT '66 and kitbash it with the AMT '67 Fastback or Shelby. The chassis would be identical (as they pretty much all were-----1965-73).....as well as other mechanical bits. The '66 kit in of itself is very basic-----molded in chassis details and mundane engine bay details......pretty much typical of your basic kit tooled in the '60's. I know of no resin '65's hardtops out there.....someone else may know, but I've not seen one. You could try the Revell '65 Fastback and use the AMT '66 roof, but get ready for a LOT of bodywork as they're two different scales. You'd have to "stretch and widen" the '66 roof to accommodate the '65 'cuz your dealing with 1:24 vs. 1:25. Good luck and post pics if you can!

Great old Z Mark! I often wondered why you never see these on the roads anymore. The cars aren't THAT old considering.......but back in the early '90's they were EVERYWHERE! Ditto what everyone else says.........this would have made a great ROM!
-
George, if I were to call someone that.......would that mean theirs are high and wide??
-
I did that years ago Larry when I built my '69 Daytona.......I just hate breaking up kits just to get a few parts to make a certain version. I guess I could swap the 440 into the '67, but I'm not sure the 440 was out for '67? I was a bit too young to remember the car when new.
-
Nice Bugeye Randy!! I think yours is the first one of that kit I've seen built! That paint looks flawless! Your Bugeye reminds me an awful lot of my old '71 MG Midget------a very tiny car by even today's standards for sure! ...........And look at little Nickie!.............awwwww............
-
Excellent 'Cuda Stump!! The color, the wheels, the stance, everything fell together great! I still say that Johan made the best body of the '70-'74 'Cuda.........why they never made a full on stock kit is beyond me. Don't worry about the length of time to finish............I started my '55 Ford originally in August '05---------shelved it a few months later when certain parts were unobtainium, and then started on it again last October. Now it's heading on a year and hopefully in the next few weeks I can call it done!

Ooooohhh! I just LOVE 1957-58 GM hardtop wagons!! ;) That '57 Buick is a real beauty!! A Caballero IIRC.......... I did vote.........but I'll keep comments to myself 'til later.......... -
Gotta Give AMC A Thumbs Up Here
MrObsessive replied to Joe Handley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
AMC's (Rambler) old sixes out of the '50's-'60's were tough engines as well. I remember as a kid hearing stories about folks purposely trying to kill 'em but they wouldn't die! True tough engine story: Back in the late '80's I had a cousin call me one day saying that her Chevette (an '81) wouldn't go over 40 mph on the highway. I told her it may be a compression problem and she ought to get it checked at the dealer and soon. She then calls me back a few days later and says the car is running fine now------I asked her what was wrong with it? She says "I went to get gas and when they checked my oil, they saw nothing on the dipstick". They put in oil and the car ran like nothing was wrong. No smoke, no knocks, no tapping valves, nothing! I said whaaaaaat?? How did that car's engine NOT seize if you were running without oil?? She had made what would have been a 40 mile round trip where she was originally going when she had called me to complain about the car! Well since then, I've come to have a LOT of respect for those little four bangers. Too bad Pontiac didn't see fit to leave this engine alone when they made the Fiero. Pontiac "shortened" the height of the engine by giving the Fiero Iron Duke four a smaller oil pan. That's the reason you don't see many early (particularly 1984) Fiero's around today-----especially four cylinders as the engines self destructed from lack of oil (5 quart pan down to 3). -
Giving a quick glance at the instruction sheet 'cuz my kits still bag sealed until I build it--------there is a roll bar with a molded in extinguisher, as well as beefy rear drag tires. I see no roll cage per se.........but one would should be easy to scratch build. You'll love the kit though as the body is dead on accurate for a '68!

Gotta get my wisdom teeth removed.
MrObsessive replied to Berk765's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well how 'bout having 2 top front, 2 bottom front, and one in the rear pulled all at the same time! I just had that done a couple months ago as the dentist suggested that they be pulled or they're gonna come out on their own....................and that could be most unpleasant! I've got partials in their place now-----------let's just say I haven't gotten totally used to eating with 'em yet! -
Great looking engine Bill! I think Revell kits the best 440 out there in this series. I just picked up this kit the other day and my only beef is I wish Revell would have included ALL the engine parts for those of us that want a street Hemi! Other than that the kit is perfect! Yeah, Chargers are about the only muscle car I can think of that looks good with a vinyl roof. It's too bad Chrysler didn't see fit to incorporate more of the '68-'70 styling cues into the current Charger.
