Thanks....I mixed the orange as close to the middle of a Wheaties box and a 1/64 Racing Champions, then airbrushed. I think I painted the chassis ModelMasters Comp Orange. I've been away from NASCAR building for quite some time, though I have noticed only older downforce cars in hobby shops. I guess thats all available to build anymore, would like to build one again...guess it will have to be an older one?

69 Chevelle SS Pro Mod WIP (Updated 3.26.14)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Been able to do some mods, been a slow go though, front end (under the headlights) has posed some challenges. Actually, the air dam I have now is the third this Chevelle has had. For this one, I had to grind away everything I had below the bottom of the bumper line. At least I was able to save the bumper...lol. My goal was to keep the bumper and headlight area stock-appearing because this is one of the strongest defining areas for the 69 Chevelle body. I've re-filled the nose area and started smoothing. I've also started the front fender-well treatment, closed in the opening behind the wheel, added the beginnings of the new fender flares. I hope to make very good progress this week and will post some pixs when I have them. Thanks for looking!! -
Great start. Gonna be an awesome ride, can tell already. Look forward to watching your progress and seeing the wip. These early stages make your mind race with possibilities, right??

Love this ride, always wanted to try one, maybe one day. Awesome build!!

C5-R 2001 Corvette Pro Mod (WIP....team car)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanx for following my builds and the nice comments.......planning, research and creativity are key and I learn something new almost every time I work on these two projects. I hope to learn much more during this build! Mitch: There will be several of the sheet metal panels that will be modeled as structural...meaning they will actually be soldered to the frame. The floor panels and tranny tunnel will be built as seperate pcs like a real pro-mod and the panels that seal body to interior will be seperate. I've left one side of the chassis open for fitting the floor. All will be fitted before chassis is painted. Structural panels will be chassis color which leaves the seperate pcs to a choice of any color and then glue/attach them in place. The tubs will snap in place. Willie: Good luck on the '70 Mustang....very cool car Michael: Sounds like you have a fun build planned....good luck on the stretch! Tyrone: Upstate (Spartanburg area) -
Thanks Dwight.....I think NASCAR told Ray Evernham not to bring the chassis back, found an article at link below. I don't know if that was ever confirmed....just always heard it was true. http://www.nascar.com/2007/news/headlines/cup/05/18/all.star.flashback.1997/index.html

Hello all....First time I've posted in NASCAR section. I would like to share some pix of my #3 Wheaties car I built back in 1999. I was actually at that race (The Winston '97). That was the race Jeff Gordon dominated in the Jurassic Park red car, to be later banned from any Nascar event. Not superdetailed, but I love it. Hope you enjoy. Thanks for looking!

C5-R 2001 Corvette Pro Mod (WIP....team car)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Willie, thanks for the kind words. You should be able to find what you need @ www.ksmetals.com. At their site, they show the usual retailers and their offerings. Most hobby shops do carry a full line in copper and brass. Some hardware stores carry the brand, but not all the smaller tubing. The great thing about brass and copper is they will solder together very well. I use WaterFlow 2000, which is a water soluble paste flux....for non-electrical soldering. I use .022dia Rosin-Core Silver-Bearing solder (can be bought at Radio Shack). -

Thanks for the comments all. Motor will be full blown and posting some chassis pix. So far I've used brass and copper....suspension parts will probably be aluminum. Thanks for looking!! -
Hello All, This is the Corvette I'm taking a break from to do the Chevelle. This dude started out as a Rolex 24hr car that was ready for decaling to be finished, so I started chopping. Posting some pix of current progress, I hope to be back on this after I finish my current project, hoping to make it a team car. This has a good bit of body mods so far and I think my next step is to cut the back off (in front of rear wheel) and raise app 3/32 to 1/8 and blend to finish off the wedge. Thanks for looking! Front diagonal cut to lengthen nose Mid-cut to lengthen center, would have been to much to do all in the nose Body back 2gether, Rough frt air dam, extended top of frt fenderwell Extended sides, smoothed over nose Body in primer Chassis locked in, ride height close Scratchbuilt hood, motor started, and nose removed Ready 4 more work

69 Chevelle SS Pro Mod WIP (Updated 3.26.14)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks Michael for the comments and topic update.... Thanks Scott, you guys are making me feel great about this one. Glad you noticed the wheels, they do add to the feel and will be closer to what I use. Think I may machine me a set, I've started 3D modeling them but unable to finish. -
69 Chevelle SS Pro Mod WIP (Updated 3.26.14)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks for looking and all the comments...really gives me motivation. I've begun smoothing over the front end somewhat. I think so far, the front-end treatment has really added to the overall feel of the final shape. I've only blended a curve from mid front wheel to top of headlights, but that seems to give the effect all the way to bottom of where the windshield will be, which is great. That's almost what I was looking for. So now it's time to move to the area under the headlights and I'm still thinking about that, probably will stay pretty close to what I have now....but extended out some. Have posted pix b4 and aft. Thanks for looking!! I do have a question for anyone.....How do you edit the topic name? I have looked and looked, but don't see anything. ......ps, figured out a trick, I'll pass it along. You know how you are not supposed to use a gob of filler at once (will not dry)?? Well, I did use a gob (app. .093 thk). I used a needle and poked lots of holes in the deepest parts to allow air to get in. It worked out quite well, but there is a downside. I now have to putty again to fill the holes, albeit lightly though and was planning on doing that anyway to blend spoiler work. Thanks all....everyone's doin some outstanding art here. -
69 Chevelle SS Pro Mod WIP (Updated 3.26.14)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Able to get some more done......this time, mostly the nose. I'm going for the low, rounded, bullet shape (sort of Camaro-ish) and the gradual curve usually present on Pro-Mods from the nose to the back. I chopped off the nose, then extended an extra 3/32 (.093") between front of fender well and headlights. I then cut the nose in half and removed around .08 to narrow the width. I glued the two halves back together, then glued nose back on front end approximately 1/16 below the cut line. This left me with a narrower, lower headlight area that is now waiting for filler to cure to smooth it all up. I tell you what....this is certainly challenging, but I'm having a blast with this one. I only hope it looks like the vision I have for it. BTW, I'm thinking solid yellow with black wheels. Thanks for looking!!! -
ridiculously great....what a super clean build!!! Almost looks real, I had to do a double-take. Can't wait to see finished.

liking it so far, good-looking chassis and great stance......cool black fingernail btw, sign of a tru modeler (lol)

69 Chevelle SS Pro Mod WIP (Updated 3.26.14)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Got the basic tapered sides in place, i'm thinking of flaring lightly from middle of door to where the rear wheel starts (not sure about that yet) and I will reshape the front and rear wheel openings. Thanks for looking! -
69 Chevelle SS Pro Mod WIP (Updated 3.26.14)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks for the votes of confidence...will take some patience and creativity though. I just hope the front end poses no problems, I am remaining positive. My goal is to make the front look mean, sleek and fast while keeping the 69 identity. I should have the sides of the body extended today, which will hopefully bring the wedge profile to life. My inspiration for the body is actually a picture I have of a '69 Pro Mod Camaro, so if you see some resemblance somewhere down the road, that would be the reason. Thanks for looking! -

hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
OK....so you think everything is going as planned till you see a picture that makes you think "What if?". Well, that has happened. My mild mannered Chevelle is moving into the Pro-Mod ranks. I've replaced the top with the STP Firebird Pro Stock, stretched the nose and re-adjusted the stance. I'll post more as I do the mods. Thanks for looking! -

well, finally able to get back on this one......hood work almost done, chassis work getting close (not going all out, by no means), motor is coming along. Few more things to do on chassis and ready for some gunmetal w/black tin. thanks for looking -
I have to agree....enjoyed this thread and the pix, very awesome stuff. Chassis building is my fav part of the dragster build....research, planning, measuring, 3D modeling, etc...and every single time there are certainly lessons learned. This may have been brought to light already but the very first thing I do when scratching a chassis is establish the wheelbase on the body. These do vary between classes/styles which goes back to planning your build. Tyrone, thumper86, 1320wayne.....your art is magical, love it!! Posted some pix of my modern style pro-mod brass/copper chassis.

66 Shelby GT350H (Pro Outlaw or Pro-Mod ????)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I appreciate your opinion, which is exactly why i have not worked on this in about 2 yrs now........Everytime I've studied this body, it always seems a little square or box-like and I did wedge an app 4 scale inches along the lrp's when this was started (should have been more). I do think there are a couple of contributing factors leading to that missing aggression including your suggestion; 1) I think the headlight and grill are still located a bit high and could be narrowed when looking at front view 2) A nice little blend between the rear wing and sides along with the wing starting point being higher and moved fwd into the first radius behind side windows 3) I did scratch the front of the top 5 scale inches lower than stock and also stretched toward frt wheels but the rear of top is at stock height, maybe the whole top could have gone another 2 scale inches lower to help 4) the hood has no bulge yet for top of motor and i'm not sure if that is good or bad yet. When i get back to this one, i think i want to see what happens when the hood has more character and go from there......Thanks for looking and i do agree fully that the aggression needs a little work after looking thru the pix i've made on this subject. It may be a little late to rework the headlight area as mentioned above, but i think the other 3 plus your wedge idea would help greatly.......hOLMS -
66 Shelby GT350H (Pro Outlaw or Pro-Mod ????)
hOLMS replied to hOLMS's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
This is 1/25 scale and I've used .093 brass for lower main chassis rails, .062 brass and copper for all other tubes except .062 square brass that will support the rear motor mount plate and structural sheet metal for the firewall......used .062 aluminum for rear end. Thanks for the comments. -
Hello all This is my 66Shelby I started a several years ago and hope to be back on sometime soon, just thought I would share some of my pix I made clowning around w/camera. This one has a scratch brass and copper chassis, scratch front & rear suspension (w/4-link). The body is heavily modified and somewhat close to final sanding/priming, even though some of the shots look kinda rough. The wheelbase has been stretched to a scale 110".....scratched rear wing.....stretched, lowered and tilted nose......scratched top from back of side windows forward.....very light fenderwell flares with reshaped openings......and rounded lower rear valence for wheelie-bar clearance. I'm not quite sure if this one will be pro-mod or pro outlaw with 10.5 rears. This one has been nothing short of challenging/fun and a complete labor of luv. Thanks for looking......hOLMS....... ps...everyones work/art at this forum is outstanding, keep it up!!!!
