The Wolfgang Press covering "Mama Told Me Not To Come", an old Three Dog Night song. I heard this years ago in the movie "Party Girl", starring Parker Posey. I watched it with an Army buddy whose taste was...eh, well...different. Neither of us really fit in. We both got out after one term of enlistment. Good guy, though. I still hear from him occasionally.

I found a different source for the drivetrain swap: a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. One-stop shopping. It has everything needed; pushrod 5.0, trans, and 8.8" rear axle. As a bonus, I get to pick through the rest of it. I do like that power driver's seat. It has an aftermarket stereo that will go into the Ranger, too.

What an incredible PITA. I'm looking for a Ford Explorer with V-8 and solid rear axle. I must have sent out 15 replies to ads. I get answers like "title is lost". Hmmmm. Ad said clean title. Seller wants blue book value and the interior looks like two lions had a fight inside, plus bad paint and two doors don't open right. Full disclosure: I only want the drivtrain to swap into my old Ranger, but still, I'm not paying blue book for that. Those are the people who answered. Selling...oy vey. I once got rid of an engine and trans for a dollar. I figured no one would see it in the free section. One guy was really excited about it. After several e-mails, he asked if I could hold a few months, until he could get a ride to my house. Dude. It's a dollar. <face palm>

I know, man. I just did a quick internet search. It looks like even Snap-On has some foreign-made tools. I'm so disappointed. I would not have a problem owning fewer, more expensive tools if they were really high quality. IMHO, the problem is that so many consumers want the absolute cheapest of anything, quality be damned. Makes me thinks of a customer from a while back. Had what was probably a $400k house, in the middle of a remodel. His [cough, cough] "contractor" had a 30 year old POS pickup in several shades of primer, no company name. He was cutting some wood in the driveway...using a Ryobi 8" miter saw with no table. Good luck with your remodel, buddy.

I went to Sears this morning to replace some sockets and ratchets that got lost. I knew that a lot of their electronic stuff, and the "Evolv" line was made in China. I was very disappointed to see hand tools made there, too. If I hadn't needed to use the tools today, I would not have bought them. I can get import junk anywhere.

A Wen-Mac Spirit of America toy. I just won it on eBay. It's missing the vertical fin, but that's OK. It's not for collector value, it going to get rebuilt and maybe have a little detail added. Here's a photo of one with fin: I found a site that has repro vintage toy parts, including the fin that's missing from the SoA that I got. Cool!

Last night, the #2 overall was the Disney Nautilus sub from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. That is cool. I added a vote to that one. Also a vote for the GM Scenicruiser bus. I was surprised that the Veyron didn't have lots of votes. Also surprised that there was no Lola T70 or McLaren F1. Maybe I'll go add them. That bus kinda surprised me. Buses are more popular model subjects in Europe and Asia that in the US. It would be cool to see it become a kit. I think it would be a cool model as a stocker from back when it was new, or as a privately owned, tricked out RV from today. I saw a pair of the real thing for sale on Craigslist in Austin a while back. If only I had the money...and space...and time...

People who think a half-@$$ car should win a show because the owner did all the work. This wacky belief can go so far as to make the believer think an ugly car is cool, just because the owner built it. (That unbelievably awkward shortened Chrysler roadster from a few years ago)

Use a Porsche 911 transaxle and flip it over for mid engine application.

Fujimi's 1/16 Koenig Testarossa has that style, also. The back wheels and tires are fairly fat...and phat.

Wow. What is it about model car builders that makes them such crybabies wrt new cars? -
I'd like to add that two-part catalyzed putty is great. I prefer Evercoat Euro Soft glazing putty. It is very fine grained. It seems to work best over a lacquer primer. Many "tube" type putties cure by a solvent evaporating out, allowing it to shrink and crack. Look for a book on customizing model cars by Mark Gustavson. He also had a series of articles called "Custom Clinic", In Car Modeler magazine. He tells how to do custom body work like chop tops, sectioning, channeling, etc. Well worth it to find the magazines and/or the book.

And because people like to daydream about having it all, whether it's a perfect woman or a bad-a street machine.
