  1. This will be a model of a car I would like to build in full size. The idea is a low-buck rod. Not a rat rod, but something that could be built and driven by a working man. The engine will be a Packard straight-8 (I have a real one in my garage). Frame will be scratchbuilt (it needs to be longer and stronger. The Packard engine is a beast. 925 pounds w/o trans, IIRC). I bought a resin turtle deck for it, but while I was cleaning it up, the foot locker-type trunk idea occurred to me. It's different, and it can hold enough stuff for a weekend out of town..at least enough to get me to a hotel.
  2. Is there a paint that will wrinkle up a little? Can I use masking tape and put semi-gloss paint over it? Inquiring minds want to know. Thank you.
  3. I think your project is really cool. I love seeing street rods built to a high standard. I think one day we'll see a street rod at GSL that will rival anything Gerald Wingrove has built.
  4. None of the above. Shorten front and back ends so the wheel is in the middle of the bed.
  5. Without a mill or some other way to space the swirls apart at consistent intervals, that's what you're going to get. Here's an experiment from a few years ago, using a small wooden dowel and valve lapping compound on my Sherline mill:
  6. Tamiya 1/6 Honda CB750. Not this one; it's an image I lifted off the 'net. I got a partially built one off ebay. Japanese chopper!!! I wanted an engine with more displacement. I have a 1/6 scale 250 wheel & tire. Seems like overkill for a 750. I may just use the kit wire wheels.
  7. Forged rotating assembly to turn a 351 Windsor into a 427. It's for my 1988 Mustang convertible.
  8. Scrap copper and brass. I'm a plumber and it's all stuff that we remove when repairing/replacing stuff. I keep it in 5gallon buckets. When I quit my last job, I had a few days off so I decided to separate my scrap and turn it in. I figured I'd have 3 or 4 buckets worth. I went into the garage and saw another bucket, then another, then 2 more. I remembered I might have some on the side of the house. I did. My mom came over and reminded me I had some scrap in the shed. I ended up with 17 buckets plus some stuff that was too big for a bucket. I got $1148. It bought me a corner sofa from Ikea and I had some cash left over. I LOVE the new sofa, btw. My new job doesn't let us keep scrap
  9. Would there just be one transmission? BTW I have to go to work so I can't check back in for another 11-12 hours. I'm a plumber and there's still a backlog of calls for broken pipes in Austin...a week after the big freeze. It's like this at every plumbing company in town, and all the plumbing supply houses are running low on parts. I can't wait 'til we get caught up.
  10. I've seen that, and it's wild. What I'm after is two inlines side by side, just for the visual impact.
  11. I saw this: and thought it was wild. Turns out it really got built, but details are hard to find. I'd like to build a model inspired by this sketch, but I do not like Harley Davidson engines. Would it be possible to have a pair of inline-4s side-by-side driving 4 steamroller rear tires? Could it be done with a push button shifter, and split the signal so it goes to both transmissions? Just wondering how it could be modeled realistically. Thanks. Lee
  12. I've got frozen pipes just outside Austin, TX. First time that's happened to me since the '70s. I'm a plumber and there's nothing I can do. I just have to wait it out.
  13. And, FYI, I'm one of those who thinks the magazine is just fine, even if the cover date is way off the calendar date. I happen to think the main competition is boring. Looking forward to it.
  14. A new body for the Big Deuce. It could be a Tudor Sedan, pickup, '29 Roadster or Tudor, etc...
  15. I have a couple of workbenches made from wooden doors. They are 8" tall (long) and were exterior doors, so they are heavy. IIRC they were 40 bucks each off Craigslist. A glass door from an old stereo cabinet makes a great work surface for your bench. If you spill glue or paint, you can just scrape it off with a razor. Since it's flat, you can use for lining up suspension/chassis parts. Tamiya spray can lacquer is AWESOME. Oh yeah- like CAL says, you'll get there. It just takes time.
  16. Why not try to convince a resin caster instead? Much smaller investment for "tooling", much smaller number of kits would need to be sold. Much more likely to happen , especially if several investors step up with 50 bucks for their kit beforehand. On another forum, several people have expressed interest in a 1/8 scale '34 Ford 3-window body. It looks like a few guys will invest and get their copies first. I'm one of the original investors in a 1/8 scale '71 Barracuda kit.
  17. Maybe the OP can organize a car show with owner-built cars only. I wonder how many would show up? Better yet; I wonder why no one has done this in the past? Maybe because no one would show up.
  18. Are those tires 1/8 scale? If so, I must have two sets.
  19. WOOHOO!!! Extended X and Y axes for my Sherline mill (still manual control).
  20. I agree with the OP, which is why I subscribe to Rolling Pile of Dog Poop Monthly. Next month's cover car: I'm kidding, of course. This is why "checkbook hot rodding" doesn't bother me at all. How many builders have used an idea they saw on a car built with a check book? Plenty.

  22. I don't speak for MCM, but I'll throw a couple of things out there. 1) There's no requirement for the magazines to offer the exact same content.* 2) There's a New Kit Reviews forum on this site. The reviews are by builders, not journalists. This is a big plus, IMHO. The builders pay for the kit out of their own pocket. They are not beholden to an advertiser who pays part of their paycheck. We get real opinions about how a kit looks/goes together. None of this "Which Dodge Viper is the winner? Both of them!" *I'm really glad that Gregg doesn't feel the need to match everything SA does. I find SA's content boring. I quit buying it several years ago. I feel the same way about Fine Scale Modeler; another Kalmbach publication. There are many magazines for the military modeler with better content. Kalmbach has not kept up with the times.
  23. But I drove a .PDF KIT REVIEW FILE TO HIGH SCHOOL. You'd be making a huge mistake by NOT OFFERING THIS. Yeah. I know. Donkeys/school.
  24. Did you ask him?
