  1. Woo hoo, there is a state more insane than California. That is an amazingly short sighted proposal even for politicians. You know they can make gasoline from garbage now? Seriously there is a plant in the south making diesel fuel from the waste at turkey plants, its coming out at $5 a gallon so not quite economically feasable just yet, but it is possible. The same process can use a lot of the trash currently going to landfills. Lets not work on that though, lets make cars look like roller skates and be less safe to save 0.1 mpg. http://www.changingworldtech.com/
  2. I just got my magazine today, and I think you pretty much hit the issue rigt there. People are looking at the traction engine thinking what the heck is a train doing here. It is not a train though, that was the height of heavy trucking circa 1900, really not much different than having an article on a Ford Model T.
  3. I've got a Mustang 2 kit in the stash. Some of these parts will definately be finding their way onto it. Just a suggestion, if you could have a link to a pic of the parts in each listing it would be nice. You do list after them so it is fairly clear what you get, but I like to see pics, plus I'm not that familiar with the Mustang 2 so there are a few things like the wheels it would be nice to actually see. Since you seem to be pretty familiar with the Mustang 2 maybe you can help me out. I've run into a slight snag on building what I want. When I was a kid saw a black & green Cobra 2 at a county fair, this would have been during the production run for the car so somewhere in the 74-78 range, I really want to say 76-77 but not really sure. My memory might be slipping but I'm positive it had a big cobra on the hood. Neither the Cobra 2 or the King Cobra looks right to me, the Cobra was like that used on the Shelby Mustangs. Did Shelby ever do anything with the Mustang 2?
  4. The new Camaro just hasn't grabbed me. I don't know if it is the white paint or the car is finally starting to grow on me, but yours actually looks like a Camaro.
  5. I know the feeling trying to get any service from buisnesses these days, but what do you expect when employers don't value the workers that take some pride in their jobs anymore. Its all about minimum wage these days, employees are just disposable cogs. Printers are not the best value for doing photos. There are some online photo labs, you just mail them a CD of photos with instructions on size print and such. Some will even do things like framing, buisness cards etc, I understand they can even do some 3d stuff. My wife had some done awhile back, seemed to be a pretty painless process and not anymore expensive than the old days when you dropped off a roll of film and got prints in return. There are several of these online labs, I have heard good things about Mpix from photography friends but here is a list I have if you want to shop around. 6. As Curt said, you can use a copy machine. As far as I know most would use the laser printer decal paper. I used to work with a guy who made his decals that way. He would print his decal designs on his inkjet printer then use the copy machine at work to print the decals onto decal paper. I'm not really sure why he used the copy machine instead of his printer, but it worked. However you are unlikely to find a Kinkos copy or similar that will let you put "strange" paper into their machines so that could be a problem. Actually they do, they just don't sell the ALPS in the US anymore. There is a guy in New Zealand who can still get new printers from Japan. They are not cheap, but not a lot more than people were paying for used ones on ebay. http://www.alps-supplies.com/ You can use white decal paper or paint white under the decal if you don't have an ALPS but that is definately not as simple, and willl not work in all cases.
  7. I went through a fire simulator where they had a photo of a hose and could add in smoke, fire etc in a class once. The house fire they had me running had heavy black smoke with occasional explosions coming from the back. My first thought was Oh, no its my hobby room, run away, run away.
  8. Two options, get a resin COE cab from RMR (very nice one btw), http://www.freewebs.com/rmrresin/ or have a look over here in the workbench. James is doing a COE conversion of the 1950 Checy pickup right now. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17334 I've been working on a '41 Chevy COE myself. I can tell you getting the cab moved forward isn't too hard, but the hood, that is the tricky part. I'm looking forward to seeing how James manages to do it.
  9. Those plug in air fresheners have done similar things to outlets. Not saying this was the case with you, but many old homes have out dated electrical systems. Modern society has added a lot more electrical devices than homes built in the 70's or earlier planned for. How many times have you seen the (one) outlet in a room with two power strips pluged into it. That is 12 places to plug stuff in on wires only designed to power 2 items, this is particularly common in kitchens and living rooms / family rooms (entertainment centers). Don't hesitate to call the fire department either to check it out, that is why we are here. Even if you think the fire is out there can still be hot spots in the wall. I went on a call to an office where someone left an old space heater running all night, luckily the building was on an alarm system and the smoke set off a detector. The outlet was fried and there was char about 1 foot up the inside of the wall studs. Good job on keeping your detectors supplied with fresh batteries.
  10. It is a plastic like material created through a chemical reaction. If you have ever used 2 part epoxy, resin works like that, two liquids that when mixed become a solid. If used in a mold it can be make model parts. It is a popular method of making small run model parts because it can be done relatively cheaply with minimal specialized equipment.
  11. Ok, here are some car songs that also have video with lots of cars. George Thorogood, Ride on Josephine Commander Cody, Hot Rod Lincoln http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6g9yylRujU Chuck Berry, Maybellene Its hard to find good vids and good sound for Chuck Berry, but here is a really young Chuck. Chuck Berry, Can't catch me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTp_xxRJaK0
  12. All right finally some pork for me, its about time!!! I work for the NPS so at least its some waste I can get my hands on.
  13. Thanks, you know me and my Krylon.
  14. Thanks, I'll have a look, I'm pretty sure I can at least get the Meguiars. Just thought I'd try to step up my paint jobs a bit. I put some Meguiars wax over a coat of Future last last year. It really increased the shine, but didn't deal with some of the small imperfections in the finish.
  15. I've seen some of you use this to get a really smooth finish. Is this a hobby product or something I can get at an auto supply store like Kragens or NAPA? Thanks
  16. There are 22 replies to the point you made this comment, I only saw one that could be taken as an attack on your opinion. Unless you consider differing opinions attacks, I don't see what you are responding to. The majority are simply saying why they thought it was an appropriate article to include.
  17. Brian, just wanted to thank you for posting this, it has inspired me to finish mine, although in a slightly different theme. I started converting this kit into an ambulance several years ago and it has just been laying about collectiong dust. Because of your post I pulled it out and got some paint on it. While not intended as a replica it was heavily inspired by Bill Cosby's ambulance in Mother Jugs and Speed. This is how it has sat for probably 3 years. And yesterday it became this
  18. Sounds like we need to twist some arms for an other than model cars area. Sounds like several of us have been sneeking off and building stuff other than cars lately.
  19. I understand peoples frustration with the magazine being late but really as long as I get the 9 issues I paid for mostly within the year I paid for I'm a happy guy. Like you said at least when it shows up its worth reading.
  20. Very nice, I haven't seen a van with a mural on the side in years. It would fit right into a Cheech and Chong movie, just needs some smoke coming out of the windows.
  21. I think everyone goes through spells where they just can't build. I really got that way about a year ago, I'd open a kit, maybe assemble the frame and then just put it aside unable to generate any motivation. Part of the problem was I like to build fire apparatus, but they are not simple builds. I started trying other things, painted some figures, built some aircraft, last March I built a helicopter and that really got me going again so last week I pulled out my Trumpeter fire engine and picked up where I left it more than a year ago.
  22. Well H E double hockey sticks, there goes my article idea for an amphibous tank turned salt flat racer. Really guys, a traction motor is early construction / farm equipment. I hope a build of AMTs Cat D8 Dozer or one of their farm tractors fits here, it certainly doesn't fit in other magazines. There is more to car modelling than hotrods and lowriders, not that there is anything wrong with those. I'm still waiting for my issue, now I'm looking forward to seeing this article to see what the fuss is about.
  23. I would try it one something unimportant like a piece of sprue, but I bet if you experiemented a bit you could make a brushable adhesive from Elmers glue. Just thin it with water to get a nice thin consistancy. You can clean the brush with water, but I wouldn't use a good brush just in case. You might even be able to use a finger to apply it if there are no tight corners you need to get into. I might give this a try myself since I don't have any stores that would carry something like gold leaf adhesive within an hour of me. That reminded me of Emo Phillips talking about his childhood. When I was a child my parents used to tell me to stay away from the basement door. One day when they were gone I open the door and saw all kinds of wonderful things... birds, trees, blue sky and clouds....
  24. While browsing I realized I missed a whole 1/3 of the Big 3 How about a suggestion for a '70-74 'Cuda or Challenger, I've always liked the look of that car. Might as well recommend a Charger too. Also how are Revell's '69 GTO, 68 & 70 Firebirds? Definately starting to become a wish list instead of a shopping list.
  25. I just saw a car posted on FSM that used it for a vinyl roof. Looks like it is worth playing with if you like vinyl tops. http://cs.finescale.com/forums/1080682/ShowPost.aspx
