  1. Hmmm 235,000 on an '89 Tercel, 270,000 on a '96 Tacoma and well over 200,000 on a '69 Landcruiser FJ55 (the odometer broke 14 years ago at 189,000 and I can't find any reason to fix it). The Tercel had some issues, but I think that can be largely blamed on the previous owner and me not really doing the proper maintenace. The other two have been pretty much trouble free just the usual wear items, brakes, shocks etc.
  2. Amazing how many economy cars are on this list. I say amazing because I'm amazed at how many people seem to expect them to be fast, sporty and sexy looking. I guess being cheap to buy, cheap to operate and relatively reliable isn't good enough for a car built to provide inexpensive transportation. Personally it is a dream of mine to own a diesel Chevette with the license (yr of manufacture) Vette, just to irritate some Corvette owner of the same vintage who wanted that plate.
  3. I'm quite impressed with the kit overall so far, but what a pain with the cab. Thanks for the tips, it sounds like it is mostly a case of the interior supporting the outside. It could be worse, the interior could be bigger than the assembled opening of the cab.
  4. I'm building my first Italeri truck kit, and am wondering about their multipiece cabs. Can I assemble the shell completely so I can paint it without the interior like I do every other kit I've built, or do I have to build it around the interior? The kit I am doing now is the Freightliner FLC if it matters, but I also have the Ford LTL to do down the road. Thanks
  5. It would be a daycab, sorry I misread your post and didn't pickout the sleeper in the photo. Still not clear on the why does it exist part other than the single rear axle? If that is it, then if the company doesn't need to haul a heavy load it saves money upfront on the truck, saves money on maintenance and tires are expensive. One axle is 4 less tires, maybe a little better fuel economy too.
  6. What is confusing about it? The tractor is set up for short haul, modest weight loads. I'm not really familiar with curtainside trailers, but assume they are basically flatbeds with some protection from the weather / debris for the load.
  7. Thank you, that is very helpful.
  8. Thanks, from what I've read the main difference (at least as far as we are concerned for models) would be replacing the inline fuel injector with a V style injector. So basically making this this piece? http://www.jhdiesel.com/Cat.htm about 1/2 way down the page
  9. Yes, the '48 has decals. Artists oils work well for wood graining, takes a little practice but its not terribly difficult. The long dry time makes the oils very user friendly, very easy to wipe it down and try again if you don't like the result. Here is a tutorial showing wood graining technique on a 1/32 ww1 airplane. http://www.clubhyper...odgrainel_1.htm The stock engine would be a flathead correct? Shouldn't be that hard to scrounge up one of those. What's the Caddy engine that comes in the kit?
  10. I think the Cummins NTD350 is a typo, it is what was on the list I had, and is what the White Western Star says on the box, but putting it into google only brings up hits on the kits listed as having that engine, no hits on a real motor. I think that should be NTC350. Also the motor in the Louisville is a Ford V225 (it's on the valve covers) which is just a Ford branded Caterpillar 1160. The 3208 would have had V636 or Cat 3208 on the valve covers. The 1160 and 3208 are very similar so most likely only the most eagle eyed would notice if it was used in a later model truck (3208 introduced in 1975). The Revell snap Kenworth W900 has the same Caterpillar 3406 as the Pete kit.
  11. More engine options, enough with the small block chevys. How about the big Ford / Lincoln 337 Flat head, or a Lincoln Y block, both would offer something different for early hot rod guys and old truck guys. I'll buy whatever kit they stick them in. Tool up a diesel engine for the Ford dually kit already and just for something wierd, how about a Hall Scott 400 (and a truck to put it in)
  12. Thanks Continuing on the what if thoughts, the bed from the 53, 55 or 56 kits could be used for a stepside with these kits correct? I understand there was little to no change in the bed from the 50s to the 70s.
  13. I get a bit confused by Big Cam and Small Cam Cummins, but wouldn't the 475 Cummins also be a Big Cam?
  14. Thanks I've found reference to the Italeri Freightliner FLC and Ford LTL9000 having either a Cummins FTC400 or FTC475, can anyone confirm this? I know the kits have the same engine, a twin turbo inline.

  16. I don't doubt that, but the new kits are 2wd, so detailed or not... Now that I'm thinking about it, I think the Model King truck was an F350, so maybe the Bronco would be a better donor?
  17. So would the running gear from the Model King '78 Ford be correct for a '69-71 4x4?
  18. Yeah, 1953-56 is the only other Ford C series, the earlier COEs did not have a seperate designation from the conventionals they were based on. Since I have several C-600 stake trucks and Louisville van trucks, this re-issue doesn't do much for me. A 1950s COE would have been really cool and I would have bought several.
  19. Actually it is a C series truck, the first C series was offered by Ford 1953-56. The C series most know was introduced in 1957 and ran until 1990. Unfortunately I expect the box art was a goof. My first hope is Round 2 will respond to this mistake by tooling up the truck on the box to avoid admitting such a terrible faux pax. Failing that I hope they lock the artist in a small room full of televisions playing Barney the dinosaur episodes, as that is the only punishment remotely fitting the crime.
  20. A little later than that, the side marker lights on the door came in 1968, but the truck is actually a 1974 or later. In the 1970s (1973 or 74 I think) the side marker lights on the door moved from above the trim line, to below the trim line. The Boxart shows a 1968-73 but the actual model is the later version with the marker lights lower on the door (1974-85). In 1985 or 86 until the truck ended production the F O R D on the front of the cab was replaced with a blue Ford oval in the center of the cab (between the headlights where the kind of trapizoidal badge is on the kit). The engine in the kit was dropped as an option after 1982, so most likely the kit is a 1974-1982 C-800.
  21. Sprue is the word you want (I think), most of us call the frame all the parts are attached to a sprue. As far as the C600 on the box and C800 on the cab, this kit has been issued as a C600, C800 and C900 at different times. It is correctly a C800 or C900 as the engine included in the kit was only available in those heavier duty trucks. A C600 would have had a 300 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder engine, a 330 or 361 cubic inch small block Ford V-8.
  22. I really hope you are wrong, I'd love to get a kit of the older 53-56 C series. If this is a box art mistake it is a huge one like putting a 1960 Corvette on the box for a 1970 Corvette kit.
  23. Bump Thought I'd go ahead and try to match the engines with the kits in this thread instead of starting a new one, I'm sure I've missed a few. Not dealing with the European trucks but I'll include them if they are provided. I'll update the first post when there is enough to make it worthwhile. 24. I don't do a lot of the things people do with Ipads, I'm mostly interested in handy websurfing device that will also work for reading pdfs and such. I have a Droid X phone which does these things, but the screen is a bit small for any extended reading. I have been looking at a Nexus 7 they are around $200 and seems to do what I need without making me pay a high price for features I'm not really interested in. It is not a replacement for the more capable tablets like Ipads, but if you are like me and just want a basic tablet it might work for you. It has a 7" screen so about 2x the size of most smart phones. I had not thought about using it for photos at the bench, I really like that idea. http://www.google.com/nexus/#/7
