  1. There is so much knowledge on this site, but getting people to respond is like pulling teeth sometimes. For some reason, threads that involve arguing and bickering get 4 pages of input, but 5 people might respond to paint questions. My suggestion is do as I did: join every modeling forum, and read every thread in the painting section. I've spent the past month and a half reading, and finally started laying down some paint, with better results than I've ever had. I think I spend more time reading that modeling, LOL, but I enjoy learning as much as possible before jumping into things and wasting money. Good luck. If I can be of any assistance shoot me a PM.
  2. Can someone please, IN DETAIL, explain what the Norbie method is? Im not asking for a chapter from War and Peace, but help the new and uneducated (me) understand what you are talking about.
  3. What kind of paint? Acrylic? Enamel? Paint until gloss? Alot more details needed please
  4. Can someone expand in detail what this Norbie method is?
  5. I think most people here will tell you enamel paint when decanted will dry quicker if.you thin with lacquer thinner. I've find.this true.
  6. I picked up a Paasche H airbrush yesterday from Michaels ($89.99 - 40% off = $56.00) and tried it out today. I'm working on a 1/32 Salt racer and used Rustoleum Gloss Enamel Orange. I decanted it, thinned with cheap lacquer thinner from Home Depot, and sprayed. It turned out unbelievable! I used the #5 needle and tip, just like Donn, and after I emptied the bottle it was glossy smooth. It's a little tackier, and might take a little longer to dry, but the method works great. But in regards to why I started this thread, I want to use acrylics because I will paint in the basement in the winter (separate enclosed room, exhaust fan and paint booth), and I don't feel comfortable spraying enamel in the house. But I will experiment with different acrylics and post my result here to help others if need.
  7. All great points fellas. And although I do love to practice with my airbrush and see the different results, I do not like wasting paint/money. I can say with 100% certainty that I know how to spray enamels now thanks to Don's proven method. I'm just uncertain as to acrylics. Is there anyone here that only uses 1 type of acrylic paint, much like Donn only uses enamel? Regards, Doug
  8. Revisiting this topic, in a perfect world I would be able to locate every Testors enamel color and make at my local hobby shop. But that doesn't happen. But i will find the color I'm looking for in Tamiya, or Duplicolor etc, but now how do I proceed painting with similar results? The video is great, but only works for 1 type of paint not easily accessible to the masses. I would love to see a video using different paints....
  9. Love the colors! What did you thin the Rusteleom with and what was the ratio?
  10. Thanks BK....is.the.canned clear the same as this.bottle clear? Maybe I should attach some pics of the General Lee in hopes for more input?
  11. Forgot to add..its to clear the body after paint. Here's a link: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=150641925352&index=8&nav=SEARCH&nid=34365679517
  12. Curious if anyone uses this on your cars? It's a bigger 1.75oz bottle versus a little 1oz...plus its only 4 bucks. It looks like it would have to be thinned with lacquer thinner and airbrushed.
  13. I think most people like to get involved in the build threads...to offer their thoughts and ideas....to praise or criticize the build...etc. The under glass model can only receive so much praise before it becomes repetitive.
  14. Thanks Mark. I'll go shopping tomorrow! Question about HOK....there website is overwhelming....is their paint urethane? lacquer? Im interesting in thier paint...but where would I buy it in small amounts? Are all their paints the same in regards to primer/basecoat requirements?
  15. That is metallic based. I'm looking for black with no flakes whatsoever.
  16. I'm looking for a gloss Black, non-metallic, and a brand other than the hobby brands. I've tried a couple Duplicolors but they seem to be metallic black. Does Duplicolor make a straight gloss black without metallic? What other brands might you suggest? Thanks, Doug
  17. I had the same problem. So I tested Duplicolor black over Duplicolor grey primer on a spoon. It came out looking extremely dull, no shine. Without sanding at all, I sprayed duplicolor clear over it, and it came out nice. I wet sanded and polished the clear and it looks great. Be sure to shake the clear for a full minute otherwise it will come out dull also. I'm painting a Cadillac now, and the paint is dull. I'm going to wetsand the paint with 6K then 12k then scratch x and clear it. Should look fabulous.
  18. Harbor Freight sells an airbrush compressor for about 70 bucks and is quiet from what I've read.
  19. What is the time limit needed for airing out decanted paint?
  20. Bought a Wet Sanding kit from Hobby Lobby yesterday for $9.00. It's located in the model car section, and includes one sheet each of 300, 600, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000. 12,000 grit. I looked at Micromark, but that seems a little too high for my taste.
  21. Michaels has to be the cheapest place I know for model paint. I bought a Testors 1/4 oz bottle of 1539 metallic blue for 89 cents. I found a 40% off coupon on my smartphone, and the cashier merely scans your phone. Most places already do this but I wasn't aware Michaels did also.
  22. Good point Donn. My only dillema being the higher cost of hobby paints as opposed to decanting duplicolor, etc.
  23. Forgot to add I'm using a double action airbrush. Would lacquers need 30+ psi as Donn did? I've had to strip 2 models lately and I want these paint jobs to hopefully get smoother.
