Some Pictures Of My Drag Racing Cars

Excellent stuff! Looks like you could re-enact the history of drag racing in the sixties all by yourself! -
New Resin '62 Studebaker Gt Hawks On Ebay
mr moto replied to mr moto's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Looks like my link to the Bay didn't work. Try this one if you're interested. If it still doesn't work you can probably search it out (How many Studebakers can there be on Ebay?) Stude GT Still didn't work!! -
There are newly cast resin Studebaker GT Hawks showing up on Ebay. That has always been one of my grail vehicles so I bought one for a fairly steep price (too much). I plan to do a full review of what I got later after I have the chance to take some pictures but the short story is that they're pretty rough. It looks to me like it will be usable to build an okay curbside after a good bit of work but that's probably because I'm a fanatic. In short, bid if you're like me and hafta have it but don't expect All-American Models or Modelhaus type quality. http://cgi.ebay.com/1962-Studebaker-GT-1-2...bayphotohosting

Welcome on board, Brian. According to Yahoo Maps you're only 1218.1 miles due north from me. Practically neighbors!
-
Welcome Chris! Hope you have a good time here.

That's beautiful and an excellent piece of work. It's so well done that it's hard to appreciate that so much is scratch built! Everything looks as good or better than if it was manufactured. WOW!

My Version Of The Rat Packer Chevy Ii
mr moto replied to fireguy14's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Very cool, Fireguy! I like clean builds. -
Is the finished creation gonna be brought to life on Halloween?
-
It's easy to picture that winning "People's Choice". Who wouldn't fall in love with that truly classic look!?!
-
WOW! That's a beautiful thing! Box art build??? I'm curious, too. Is there a kit on the way?
-
I love the concept! I'll be keeping my eye on this one.

Last night I did some test painting with BIN and found out why it comes with that funny spray nozzle with a big hole. After a few sprays through a Krylon nozzle it clogs up completely. This wasn't a big problem because I had plenty of Krylon on hand and just popped a nozzle off another can and continued. The clogged nozzles cleaned up easily after soaking a few minutes in alcohol. But before I do any more BIN spraying I'll be sure to have extra nozzles and a small jar of alcohol handy. It does a great job of protecting sensetive plastics (recent Revell) from lacquer. I started with a primer coat of Mr. Surfacer 1200 (couldn't use my usual Krylon or Duplicolor primers) followed by BIN then put Duplicolor on top. Duplicolor would seriously etch the plastic before (even on top of Mr. Surfacer) but it worked perfectly with the bIN.

I bought a can of BIN last night. Tonight I'll be finding out if it can protect the soft Revell plastic from automotive lacquer. Anyway, the story about it having a lousy nozzle is absolutely true. It looks like the hole is just too big. The good news is that Krylon nozzles (which I happen to have on hand) fit perfectly and solve the problem 100%. So if you have any Krylon around the house or use it to paint models like I do you can solve the spray nozzle problem easily.

That has a real classic style. I can't wait to see it after you fix it up! AMT's original Deuce roadster from the Trophy Series was molded in black and came with a hemi so I'll bet you've correctly identified it.

Found A New Site Worth Checking Out
mr moto replied to parki's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Holy cow!!! I WAS around for the "Golden Age" but I guess there was a lot that I missed. Somehow I wasn't familiar with Bob Siffert's models but he's obviously a great innovator and craftsman! -
Beautiful work! I know how challenging R&R and some other resin bodies can be but your work makes it look like perfection. Just one little nitpick. Am I the only one old enough to remember that amber turn signals didn't start until '63? Maybe I'll get old enough to forget it soon!

Great work on the Merc! I hope it doesn't get overlooked in the flood of Revells. The shifter and engine details are fabulous! Also, much thanks to Mr. Willits for a brilliant technique. I'll definitely try that one soon.
-
Thanks for the compliments, guys! That's a Revell kit. It's the companion kit to their '59 convertible, in fact it includes almost all the convertible parts, too. You could probably cut off the roof and build a convertible if you wanted to do it the hard way!
-
This is my current project (one of 'em) - the one that's most likely to get finished anytime soon. It's supposed to be a '59 Cad that's used for ranch work. It's been a real fun project so far. I had to open the trunk to make cargo space and generally abuse every part of it with washes and Tamiya Weathering Master. The body comes next. And the finishing touch!

Well, I did it. Built my own spray booth. The fan was in our bathroom until about two years ago so that was free. I used an old aquarium light that I already had. It's built on top of a cabinet from Home Depot (about $75). The plywood is scrap that I had on hand. Electrical bits and pieces plus the filter, hose and vent add up to about $45. Here it is!

The Corvettillac sure works for me but those bean counters in Detroit wouldn't have the guts to do it! Adventurous styling died sometime in the 60's and was replaced by committee-driven, focus-group tested styling.
-
That is truly SWEET! You'll be able to display that one proudly.

My favorite stripping method is Easy Lift Off. It's not instant but it's worked on everything I've tried it on and the fumes don't knock you over like the oven cleaners do. No damage to the plastic. Sold at LHS's and lots of places on the web.
