Aardvark Models Firebird III
mr moto replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I'd love to see the build up when you're finished!! That kind of price is tuff on the wallet but I have to admit it looks like it's worth every bit of that! Resin casters have to cover their costs and pay the rent just like everybody else and that is definitely world class work. -
I love it! It's got that real gasser attitude and the color, uh, let's say it gets your attention!

-56 Vette VS. -59 Oldsmobile 98
mr moto replied to JAFFA's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Gangsta was a style even back in the 50's! -
Well, somebody's been comin' up with all those car designs for the last 100 years or so!

Most of the time I just smooth and paint the inside of the roof. Usually flat white so it reflects the most light onto the interior. To bring the detail up a little more, I'll put in a few ribs made from small Evergreen half round stock and also install sunvisors and maybe a dome light if desired. For a custom look the ribs could be foiled after painting. Other ideas (that I haven't done yet) might be to add grab handles or use some uphostelry pattern decals from Scalemotorsport.com to add a simulated texture.

Removing Paint from Resin
mr moto replied to larrygre's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I've used PollyS paint remover on Modelhaus resin and had no problems. Still, I wouldn't let the part soak for longer than necessary. -
New kits at the Resin Realm
mr moto replied to JerryK's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I'll second that -- BIGTIME! Of course, that "Fairbird" might hold me over until a GT Hawk gets mastered! -
That's fabulous!! And you did a great build. A blast from the past!

The Rambler is totally cool! That paint scheme just looks natural on it - like the factory should've offered it. Hey, they made those things in Wisconsin didn't they?
-
I saw the body on display at the Tiger Fest XIV contest on Saturday (had a great time). It's looking great! Even better in person than in the photos. I love the color.

Brilliant!!

What else do you collect
mr moto replied to BIGTRUCK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Is collecting a side effect of model car disease? I don't consider myself a collecter of model cars - I'm a builder - but I do collect things. My biggest collecting problem (is "challenge" more politically correct?) would be yo-yo's. I don't know how many I have - boxes full. I figure yo-yo's have been following me home for about 47 years now. -
I use Ace Hardware "Deluxe" black enamel. Comes in a big can for a little money and it's the fastest drying enamel I've ever used. Then I put the Alclad on with a few mist coats until it looks right. Took a while to get the hang of it but there were never any total failures. You just get a better effect with a little practice. Sometimes I spray it over white enamel and get a little different look.

When he's finished I want to drive it!
-
Yes there was. It was made by Hawk and was sometimes offered as a cereal premium. Send in a boxtop and so much money. Sometimes hardtop and convertible versions were sold separately and sometimes there were parts to build it either way in the box. Anyway, I have one but no pictures and no camera. I can probably scan the box and instructions. I'll try to do that later. Of course, I got it off of Ebay. They still show up every now and then.

I like the Micro-Mark silicone that mixes at a 1 to 1 ratio. I used to use the Alumilite product that comes in their starter kits and it mixes at 10 to 1 by weight. There were a few disasters with that stuff. It's probably a fine silicone if you work in a high precision measurement mode but that's not me. 1 to 1 is the way to go! I've never had a problem since I switched. BTW, I've never attempted a body - just small parts as needed for a particular project.

Colored glass ?
mr moto replied to Tired of kit bashing's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'm not fond of spraying acrylics so I decanted some Testors candy blue and candy green and mixed them (don't remember the ratio right now but it's written on the jar) and thinned them even further than they are in the cans. I keep it on hand for window tint. A light coat looks like factory tint or build up more coats for a custom look. Just spray it on the inside surface and mask off the outside to prevent overspray. -
1963 AMT 57 T-Bird 3n1 model kit...
mr moto replied to a topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I remember the '62 issue of the '57 Bird as about the most sensational thing that had ever hit the LHS shelves. All my friends and I were totally blown away!! It had more options of every kind than had ever been seen and a completely chrome plated engine which was worth its weight in gold in the days before Alclad. It may have been part of the Styline series or else it was in the Trophy series. It included a tube of putty and some 400 grit sandpaper and body options for complete restyling that needed to be molded in with the putty. It had things like a fastback roof and a front end with faired in headlights. Of course, none of us had the skills to take advantage of all that but we wanted it anyway! -
I highly recommend Duplicolor's own primer when using their paint (Wow! There's a novel idea!). It's an excellent fine grained primer, available in several colors and absolutely compatible with the paint. While Duplicolor goes over Krylon primer just fine I've had adhesion problems with that combination several times in the past. Such as, when I trim the Bare Metal Foil and remove the excess it removes some paint with it. Now I use Duplicolor primer under Duplicolor and Krylon primer under Krylon.

CMFXXII has come and gone and I'm almost recovered. Thanks to everybody who participated or just came by to look and visit. You're invited back for next year and don't forget to bring some friends! Until then, here are the results with photos of most of the winners that you can look at. http://www.brmodelers.com/

That is called CLASS! A truly beautiful build. I like builders with an eye for style.
