  1. Thanks, Doc, but I'm looking for more of a collection of how-tos or a forum dedicated to scratch building.
  2. I'm going to be building a supply trading truck for the Zombie/Apocalypse build, and will need to scratch build most of the "supplies." Can anyone think of a site/forum where there are how-to pages or tutorials? A place where I can see a ton of examples to get my creative juices flowing? I've tried google, but this is one of those things where I don't know what I have to put in to get what I want. I end up with a ton of pages on scratch building a real gas generator instead!
  3. I know that quite a few people like Krystal Kleer, but I would make sure to test it on something first (just like anything else). It went on fine for my first two models, and on the third one, it crazed the paint under it. I've made the switch to Testor's Wet Look clear lacquer and, more recently, airbrushing Model Masters clear and I haven't looked back.
  4. I believe that for Testors/Model Masters enamels the ratio is 2 parts paint to one part thinner. (I use lacquer thinner per Donn Yost's suggestion) Example: Dump 2 jars of paint into a larger jar. Fill one of the paint jars with thinner and dump that in too. Shake and spray.
  5. Just to show what it looks like over other primers. I used it on the bare plastic on this Beetle. This is the green over Model Master's Aluminum Metalizer.
  6. Those tires and wheels are sexy. Nice work.
  7. That truck is the cat's meow! The detail made me paws! Awesome job, Andy.
  8. Gorgeous job! Love the color choices.
  9. From your title, I was hoping to see something that that would make my heart race... something that my wife would never agree to... You didn't let me down.
  10. I never got this either. In order to sand the mold lines and such, I have to take the parts off of the sprue. I guess this works best for parts without seams, or builders who don't care if they're there.
  11. Did my wife put you up to this, Richard? About 50 unbuilt, and 30 junkyard built ones that I "plan on doing something with."
  12. I wish I could. I used to go with my dad each year until I moved to Vermont to teach. It's too hard to come out for a 3 day weekend. Enjoy, all!
  13. Agreed. I still keep a tube or two around for the things I never want to come apart. Just a dab will do it. I do all of my detail painting with Testor's enamels, and I'm just getting into painting bodies with it, ala Donn Yost. I was a big spray bomber until I saw what I could do with a couple of jars of enamel and some lacquer thinner.
  14. OH YEAAAAH!!! I'm in and like a lot of other posters.... not sure yet what my anti-zombie vehicle will be.
  15. I think we can go about this in different ways. When z-day comes, we'll need vehicles to meet a variety of purposes; search-and-rescue, offense, defense, recon... I'm considering current vehicles that we have now, and what modifications they will need to survive the apocalypse. What would a z-day firetruck look like? A delivery truck? What about a traveling merchant (those always seem to pop up in zombie movies).
  16. There's nothing like getting punched in the face for an alarm clock!
  17. Testor's green metallic works. This was my first try. The bug was painted directly on the styrene and left to dry. The Merc was painted with primer and lacquers, sanded, and polished. End score: 0 minutes for the Beetle, 3 Hours for the Merc. I'm sold.
  18. After reading the post about using Testor's enamels in a airbrush, I think I found my balance between quality and cheap. The gist is to mix it 2:1 with cheap lacquer thinner and spray it at 30-35 psi right on the styrene. I can paint a car body for under $3 and have it set up like glass with little to no sanding. The only pricey piece is an airbrush setup.
  19. Ooooohhhhh yeah.... Now, can someone tell me why black tires make white smoke?!?
  20. Very cool. What color did you use for the green?
  21. Count me in, good Doctor. No idea what I'm going to build, but I'm envisioning dents, dirt, rust and tank treads... oh, and guns... lots of guns.
