Jeep Gets a Lift
gasser59 replied to gasser59's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Now that my dad's Christmas present build is done, I'm back on this build. A bit of time in tonight so I'll post some pictures tomorrow morning. -
Thanks guys. I know he's going to flip when he opens the package.
-
This one is now completed and will be a Christmas gift for my dad who was a high school buddy of Tiny's in Harlan, Iowa where I grew up. Had a few challenges but am really happy with the outcome. Comments welcome.

I'm counting this one done and I'll be putting finished pictures up in "Under Glass." Thanks for following along.

It looks much improved now that its painted but I still believe its still too large. That's just me. I wouldn't want you to change it just because of my opinion though. Let's see what other think.

Oh man I love the grass part in the front. Great idea and your sign looks good but it seems too big and overpowering. IMHO I think its twice the size it needs to be. Also, I'm not sure you need to mention that its regular gas since unleaded wasn't around back then. For the time period you're depicting, I'm not sure the gas price isn't too high. I know, it sounds like I'm being very critical but I'd like to see these last few touches to be just right along with everything else in this great depiction of time dio.

WOW...that DOES look great. Looks like you hung in there. nicely done.

In the one photo referenced above, you mentioned about the mailbox will sit there in the grass just up on a square post. Remember to keep the mailbox a bit closer to the driving portion of the roadway because the mailman will deliver it from the street and not walking across the grass. Don't forget to put a low digit number on it too. Keep up the awesome work.

Thanks for the kind words John. This has been fun and what I thought i could finish in two weeks hasn't quite panned out as planned.
-
he size looks just about right although I'd shortened it a bit. I like the dent, nice touch. Don't forget to put bird poop on it.

Thanks Pete. That is the impact I was going for so I'm glad you think it worked. Got the headlight covers and the taillight pieces painted and inserted. This morning, I cut out a dark grey sheet of fine sandpaper for the base cover and marked where to put the mounting wires around the axles. Just a few minor tasks to get done before mounting to the base of the display case. Getting really close to being done. Thanks for following along and comments welcome.

Thanks James. Let me know when you're ready and I'll connect you with my decal printer. Hopefully he still has the file I sent him, if not, we'll get you set up. I was thinking the same thing on the red scallops being part of the decal sheet. I also found online the exact colors for the white and the red. I'll go and find them and post them here as an edit. Keep watching. I may build another for myself. I really like the looks of this built up car. On edit: the colors were Corinthian White (a “creamy” white) and Rangoon Red. Thanks for the info James. I found out about the red scallops on the rear after I painted the car and still deciding if I want to paint them on. Funny I never noticed them when I was watching a promo video of the race from Autolite and Firestone that I bought online. The kit red taillight lens looked funny to me and I have other uses for them so I painted the new cutouts the same red as the body too see how they look in the rear chrome bumper piece. I'll know more tonight. Thanks again. Here's a pic of the tubing for drilling the round disks. Sorry the picture is a little blurry. Although it doesn't look like it, the red disks are the same color as the red on the body. Thanks for following along.

Got some foil put on last night and figured out a way to make the headlight and taillight covers. I took an appropriate size diameter of a section of aluminum tubing and thinned out the inside lip to make a sharp edge. I then put it in my drill and used it as a hollow drill bit through some thin styrene. Worked out quite well. They got a coat of paint and hopefully will be applied tonight. Still a bit more foiling to do plus the straps on the rear windows. Here's a couple of photos. That's all for now. Thanks for your interest and comments welcome.

Now that looks better. Do you have a period of time in mind for this dio? Say, maybe the 1950's?

Richard - I was referring to the style or year of issue, if you will, of the plate. I looks like a current issue of Oregon plate and not something a bit older. I figured whatever you put in there would eventually get some of your fantastic weathering. Ask that girl in there to get you an older style plate. Put her to work.

Any progress is still progress, no matter how you look at it. I'm just glad your progressing on this epic build. -
I like the variety of finishes on the parts washing bin but the license plate looks too new. Got something a little older yet still has some color?

Thanks Dan. I appreciate the feedback. A bit more done last night but not as much as I'd hoped. You see, I'm the package wrapper in our house and my DW is the gift shopper. That way I stay out of the stores. I know I'm getting the better end of that deal. I spent a couple of hours last night wrapping and hope to get a bit more bench time in tonight. I'm still trying to figure out how I want to cover the four headlight holes with flat round discs that are the exact size I need. A hole punch is too large of diameter. I cut some plastic rod to fit in from the backside but didn't like how it didn't cover the headlight trim ring. It needs to be something applied from the front the exact diameter of the headlight trim ring. The last of the decals were applied and I set the kit windshield in thinking it would need some fitment fixing and it dropped right in. That's a relief. I'll get some update photos posted either tonight or tomorrow morning. Thanks for following along.

Glad to see the printed fabric sheet worked out for you John. Looks stellar. I'm not sure how you applied it so in case you aren't aware, there is a product called SprayMount that is an adhesive in a spray can that would work perfectly for this. I've also used PhotoMount. These can be found in art supply stores, maybe even Michaels or Hobby Lobby carry it. I still have a can from years ago I still use for small applications. This build is really progressing lil' brother and I continue to be amazed and in awe of your abilities and skill.

That Ramchargers FED is spot on Scott. Nicely done.
-
Thanks Chris. As for the 1/16th scale - soon but not yet. Other builds are either in the works or on the drawing board before I clear my bench of 1/25 & 1/25 scale stuff. I even have a 1/35th scale planned. I'll get there one day.

Although I haven't updated this build in awhile, I've been working on it steadily. It is now painted and the decals have started to go on. A bit more to do like the head and tail light covers, roll bar padding, BMF the body / trim and a few incidentals. I bought the display case yesterday and created a Daytona crowd backdrop. This is the Revell one. I'll replace the supplied roadway surface for some black fine grit sandpaper. Tiny's name was written on a piece of duct tape covering the original Marvin Paunch name on each door. I've replicated that with the decals. Gas filler neck is sticking out the rear grill work and was fabricated with aluminum tubing and rod. Now for some photos. Comments welcome. Thanks for your interest and following along.
