1/16 Scale Army Vega Funny Car - Finished 10/14/2018
gasser59 replied to Mooneyzs's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
That is so cool Chris. Is this in 1/16th scale or 1/24th? Either way, I want a set. Be interesting to see how these come out. -
Thanks John. You might have something there regarding the 'tinis.
-
Thanks Tom. I have a few hours into it and probably not as many as you'd think since I've got everything planned out to scale in advance. I really need to get back to this one but my bench needs clearing of a couple of other builds in the way. I have a thread on this build on here. Here's the link if you want to go through it: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=48138&hl=

I found some siding that i plan to use on my vintage trailer that I found at the LHS. I can't remember exactly the style off hand but I'll show some pics of my progress. I've been working on the interior components and will eventually move on to the exterior. Probably building this out of sequence but I'll get it to work out. Since this is all scratchbuilt, it fits right in here. And here's a floorplan. Still lots to do and I plan to make it really lived in without going overboard.

Once you the the brackets thinner, it will look spot on. Nicely done. Looking forward to more updates. Keep at it bro, you'll get there. How soon are you planning on needing the decals? I've found a great new printer who does fantastic work. -
Thanks alot Chris. I really had alot of fun collecting and making items for this and putting it together. I may do another one the same size that connects to this one through the door on the left side in front of the office. I'm thinking one that has a lift or two with parts storage in the back along with a brake turning machine and possibly a lathe.

This is such a great thread. Not sure if I've posted any of my diorama or not but here goes. The sink in the lower left is made entirely out of printing plate and basswood. There's even a small screen in the drain. In this pic, you can see the scratchbuilt dyno machine and shelving. And here is the Reznor heater made from styrene with aluminum fins and tubing on the interior. The pegboard has over 200 drilled out holes. Notice the folded up newspaper and pack of Marlboro's? And finally, the office. The door is made from aluminum channel, printing plate and printable acetate that has lettering on it as well as the window. The water cooler is also scratchbuilt and the bottle is a clear screwdriver handle I rounded out with my drill. Over time it has discolored though. Most of this dio is over 20 years old. The cup holder on the side even has a site window. The office gal had to go see her plastic surgeon and get enhanced. This is one of my favorite threads. I look forward to new posts every day.

Great update Chris. I still say the 5lb bottle. -
Thanks Danno. Appreciate it. The decals were finished up yesterday and have been sent out for printing to Fireball Modelworks. Joseph does some amazing stuff.

Yes, that would really help. Nicely done.

Been working on the engine and have most of it done. Distributor is wired up and will be put in soon once the glue on wires dries. Here's the distributor wired along with the red spark plug boots. Here's a couple shots of the engine. Thanks for your interest and as always, comments welcome.

A real stunner Bill. That looks great with an aluminum finish. Good luck, like you need it. -
Thanks Chris. Slow going with this fine weather outside. Bench time is limited but I'll keep at it.
-
Thanks Bill. Yes, the Starliner has a great chassis and engine and I've finished minor flash removal on all of the pieces and they're ready for paint.
-
OK, here's a photo update with a bit of narration. Here's the side of the original body where I've started to remove the trim. Well I got carried away and realized too late that I trimmed off too much of the upper lip. In fact, I completely took it off. Looks really bad. Had to purchase another kit and was a bit more careful on this one. This is shown with a coat of Tamiya white primer. Here's a shot of the original kit chassis. Everything's molded in and I just can't work with this. Stay tuned for more.

Started this build a couple of weeks ago. Began with the AMT '63 Galaxie and since the chassis looks like it came from a promo I've recently picked up the '60 Starliner kit. I just can't build a curbside, I don't think I have it in me. I'm not going all out on this one as its for my dad for Christmas but it will have some details like plug wires and seat belts. Tiny and my dad were high school friends and I've heard numerous funny stories of Tiny's escapades. A little back story on Tiny. He was a mountain of a man at 6'4" and 240 pounds. Tiny also loved a good laugh and practical jokes. He had been driving the early Nascar circuit as well as modified and others but was without a major sponsor and needed a car to drive. In late 1962/early1963, he was living in South Carolina where he owned a fish camp. In early February, he ventured on down to Daytona a few weeks before the 500 hoping to find a team that needed a driver. Marvin Paunch was the driver for the Wood Brothers '63 Galaxie 500 car number 21 and while he was test driving a Maseratti on the Daytona track during Speed Week prior to the 500, it overturned and caught fire with Marvin still inside. Tiny and a few other bystanders ran to the burning car and while lifting the car along with a few others, Tiny pulled Marvin out. While Marvin was in the hospital recovering from his severe burns, he told the Wood brothers he wanted Tiny to take his place. They agreed and the rest is history. I'll get some pictures posted tonight of my progress. Please stay tuned.
