Mele Kalikimaka
Modelmartin replied to 1320wayne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Merii kurisumasu! Japanese! I cheated. Merry Christmas in many languages. I only know English and enough French to fake people out who don't know it. Joyeux Noel! -
Back when the kit was new. The suggested retail was probably $1.50. It looks like the price was stamped with a grocery store price stamper like I used back in the early 70s. Of course, gas was 30 cents a gallon and I was being paid $1.75 an hour. It was about the same balance between wages, gas prices and kit prices as now with the exception of model kits being a bit higher.

Rough year for classic cars
Modelmartin replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is good. Very good! -
Here is a link to some pics of a dry lakes Cord that ran with a Buick straight eight. It's a sedan but gives the flavor of what those cars looked like. Cord

Musings on the Lil' Coffin
Modelmartin replied to samdiego's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't think there is any question on the DOH Charger beating any custom or any model at all! There were the 1/25 and 1/16th kits, diecasts on and on....etc. I believe that the original release of the 1/25th kit sold over a million kits. I don't think any model kit ever has beat that. I like the L'il Coffin but I would think some of the Roth stuff sold better, perhaps even some of the Tom Daniels kits. -
Latter Day Saints? Mormons?

Are you a "scale snob?"
Modelmartin replied to ian ashton's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No scale bigotry here! I am very kum-bi-ya with the polymers. If a model is cool - it is cool. I personally don't to build big scales - they are too much work except for motorcycles. I have built 1/9 through 1/87, although 90% of what I build is 1/24-25. The difference between the two is 4%....if the models are accurate. There are way too many examples of models being listed as a certain scale and they are way off. It usually only matters if you doing a row of the same basic car. -
That would be really, really rare since AMT made the kit!!! My nominee really, really rare kit is the ITC 1/25 1940 Mercury Convertible kit.

GM designer Chuck Jordan passes
Modelmartin replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is sad news. I met him a number of times at The Ferrari Club model show in Chicago and at Toledo Toy Show. He was a very nice guy with great stories to tell. He led a very interesting life and had a great career, one that most of us could only dream of having. He will be missed. -
It was semi-pointless like most of the responses to this thread. It was part humor( I thought the use of 'succulently' was actually funny.), part responding to your odd assertion that communists were at fault for the problems in the kit. I assume you meant that humorously. I can wait for this kit but we likely agree that it will be a great kit and we will buy one.

I guess what he said was pretty JUICY!! Your comments on this subject were succinct! It was the Capitalists who threw all of the molding machine operaters in the Good Old USA out of work and shipped everything off to China. And it was all of us tightwad model builders who won't pay for what it takes to produce kits here in the USA. Are South Korean kits OK - they are pretty capitalist! They did a good job on Galaxy's Chevies and I am fairly confident that there are not a lot of 46-48 Chevrolets running around the streets of Seoul. Just a few illicit thoughts that your comments elicited from me.

You are a lot closer to Minneapolis. Steve Kohler comes to the NNL North every year and brings lots of R&R with him. Think about coming down to our show. It's the first Sunday in June. Check out the flyer at rpmmodelclub.com

The rear view mirrors look like Dumbo's ears! I love some of these 70s kits. I am about half way through building a Beetle Bus which is the window bus version of this kit. The Volks Van is the panel truck version. Thanks for sharing!

No, It's smaller!!!!

Drilling the lights out and replacing with clear lenses is the best way but you could try painting them with a mix of white and silver paint. I have done this and if you get the mix right it looks pretty decent. Testors turn signal amber or even their regular orange will do wonders for your turn signals. I think cars still had clear lenses in 63 so the headlight mix will work for that. Experimenting with washes using Polly S paints (water-based) will really add depth to some of the trim. I see you used a wash in the grill. Sometimes if you use grays for a wash they look better than black which can be kind of harsh visually. I admire your positive attitude and desire to build better.

It looks like a 65-66 Mustang that was "up-dated" to a 70. The front end shape and windshield look like a 65-66. Talking about sh!tty Mustangs reminds me of the Ohio George Malco Gasser kit and it's later variants. That was a 66 Mustang re-tooled to look like a 67. One look and you can see how off it is. The rest of the kit is great but you need to toss the body and modify an actual 67 to make an accurate model.

I have nothing but respect and appreciation for what Moebius is doing with these new automotive releases. The pics all look great to me. They really aren't my subjects but I am giving thought to buying at Least the Hudson anyway. As an aftermarket manufacturer I can appreciate how difficult it is to get every detail right. I always found something wrong after I released each new model! Too late! I rarely made a correction after that unless it was really bad. The thing is, they are just models. I take my model building seriously but not to the paint of pooping on the parade for incredibly minor inaccuracies.

Don't go hating on Pyro! I love their stuff!

What you have done is very good. You asked for comments and I wish to offer some constructive ones to help you get even better results. The model lacks visual depth. Things like the headlights, hubcaps, front turn signals and the trim at the base of the C-pillars could do with some more paint detailing. The foil is good but looks a little pebbly. Perhaps polishing the paint underneath or lightly polishing the foil after application could help smooth it out and shine it up a bit more. The interior looks great and adds a lot to the model. You really did do a great job on this model. Keep up the good work.

Cool Car, Cool Model, Cool Build! I love all the weird little tabs, spoilers, plates, wings, things, etc. I wish someone would do the Audi TT DTM car.

What is your dream model kit?
Modelmartin replied to Jordan White's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think Harry wants a 1/8 Plymouth Superbird or Charger Daytona. I want a 1/24 Bugatti T57S or SC, preferably the Atlantic but the Atalante will do. -
It would be even cooler with the Bugatti Royale wheels on it! I am a big Bugatti fan but I like seeing people have fun with plastic. You obviously are!
