63 Pro Mod Vette.......Updated 09/28/14

I haven't decided yet which clear I'm going to use. I usually use Dupli-color clear lacquer but lately I have been experimenting with either two part urethane sprayed through an airbrush or a new clear glaze that I stumbled upon at Michael's that works well over these homemade decals. -

Here are a few pics. of one side of the decals/graphics completed, minus the hood scoop, which will be painted white with a couple of added decals to that. I zoomed in on a couple of more unique logos that I found online that fit right into the whole outdoors theme with the Mossberg logo and the Stihl Dogs and Logs comp. decal. The camo pattern is continued onto the rear of the body underneath the rear bumper. The bumpers will eventually be painted silver, by hand, but that will happen after the clear coat. I also installed the wheels, front and rear, that will be used on this build. They are Pro Track aluminum slot car wheels with the seperate anodized beadlocks for the rear slicks. More detail will be added to the tires at a later time. -

Thanks, but the Camaro build shown in that other mag. belongs to Clay Kemp, not me. -

Well, here is the start of the decaling process. So far I'm happy with the layout but I still don't know where everything is going to go until I get to that section. Playing with homemade decals is a bit of a challenge as your not always sure how an image will look once it's in place. For instance, the "next generation Bass Pro Shop" decal was done on clear film and my thoughts were that I could simply double-up the decal to get the right look but unfortunately the camo graphics still had too much bleedthrough. So, I had to print a second sheet on white decal film and then trim another image as close to the edge as possible and then lay that over what was already there. Much better except for the white film showing through in the text at the bottom. That was unavoidable. More to come by the end of the weekend. And the last picture is the beginning of the chassis. -
Another awesome build to add to your extensive collection of superb Mopar vintage drag builds. I don't recall ever seeing a picture of that car with the Pepsi logo. Must have missed it all of these years.

MATCO TOOLS '57 Chevy Pro Mod

Just out of curiosity why is the front bumper and grill a mistake from Revell? This body is based on the picture below. It's a scaled down 57 Chevy Top Sportsman body and even though Revell didn't get the proportions exactly correct it's pretty darn close. If anything the body in the kit just seems to be a bit chunky through the mid section and could have benefitted from a small section being cut out to slim it down some but it doesn't have anything to do with the grill and bumper, in my opinion. -

That second picture looks like John Goodman from a Roesanne episode. -

He's got that! Well, the dually and trailer anyway. It's part of another equally impressive build. -

The tires and wheels you see here will not be on the finished product. These are simply what I pulled from the parts box for the purpose of mockup. The fronts you see here are from a RC diecast funny car. The rears are the tires from the same diecast with JPS wheels inserted. The wheels that will be used for this build will be Pro Track machined aluminum slot car wheels. -

Scratchbuilt tube chassis. I started the basic farmerails this morning. I will have more on the chassis to show by this weekend. -

O.K., so this one is moving right along with the color. The orange has been applied. It is a neon orange lacquer from MCW so it dried very flat. No worries as the clear coat will take care of that. I just applied the color this morning and it is almost dry to the point where I may even start applying some graphices this evening. -
O.K., so I've completed more of this to the point that it's almost finished. The interior is done along with the front suspension. All tires and wheels are attached. The rear bulkhead is in place and I used tinted clear plastic for the porthole windows. The only remaining details are headlights, windshield and fuel tanks along with some small minor little touches and this one can be called complete.

I went ahead and cut the front end away from the body and then retaped it in place for painting. At this point the white base coat is in place and ready for masking and orange to be added next. -

Great job Darryl. Guys, the pictures don't do this paint job justice. I've seen this body, finished, up close and the blue really pops. -

Hopefully in a few days I will have some color on this one. For those of you wondering about the base color? Think of a color that is synonymous with outdoors/hunting. -
Does Resin Have a Shelf Life?

A year is about the average I would think for most brands. I keep mine in the fridge and part of one of the batches I have now is over a year old and the "part A" is starting to break down. What happens is that it starts to build up a sediment in the mix. I can still use it as it will set up and dry but I have yet to get any smooth casts out of the old stuff. -

O.K., so the bodywork is pretty much complete. Just a few small areas to smooth out. I was able to correct the front wheelwells, eliminate all of the air bubbles and pinholes and I added a small piece of styrene strip along the rocker panels and front valence to bring the body down just a bit more. As I progress more on the body and ready it for paint I still have to decide whether I want to do a completely scratchbuilt chassis or go the Revell top sportsman route and just make the neccessary updates. -

1320wayne replied to 1320wayne's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I pretty much only build in one scale, 1/25/24 area. The larger scales are really becoming more popular but I will always stick with what I know best. There was a time that the 63 Vette was the primary body style in pro mod and even though it still is utilized quite a bit it has been taken over by the Camaros, or so it would seem. -
The detail is looking more and more impressive with each update.
