Favorite #11-style blade
Tom Geiger replied to Don Sikora II's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Back when I ran a drafting room, we used exacto number 11 blades a lot. The stationary catalog only listed the 10 packs, so I asked the secretary to order ten of those to keep us for a while. What showed up was ten 100 packs! More blades than we'd ever need in our careers. I'm still working off the pack I have from then. -
I think your photo etched letters look good. Nice job. I will echo Tamiya Tape! It's all about getting the job done right, so what's a few extra cents on tape? One tip, when I cut photo etch parts like those, I stick the fret to clear Magic Tape. and cut it with the tape on.The letters won't go flying.

The past two years haven't been the best for me either. I spent a year out of work, after moving to Pennsylvania for the job that lasted three years. Both my wife's parents died, and we went through all the craziness of emptying and selling their house. And my dog Ted died last fall.

Paint Booths & Safe Ventilation?
Tom Geiger replied to Synister's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
William and Ben, do you both have the 24" Pace booth? Is that size sufficient for model cars? I had been looking at the 36" unit, which my friend Don has and recommends. -
Arizona Warmth... Thanks for that info...!

Yes, I remember. I thought she may have taken the ears off the to next Fair. Unless you are still wearing them! BTW folks. This morning was the coldest morning in Philadelphia in 21 years. The coldest February morning in 32 years! I haven't even thought about going outside today. -

The way things go, our government would probably grant him permanent disability to save him the trouble of working! -

Cool! Rich your daughter sounds like an interesting person who will have some great stories later in life! And looking at your profile picture I was wondering if your ears had gone off to warmer climates! -
It's like 7 degrees here in the Philly area. We are running the gas fireplace nonstop to keep up with cold. And this is a modern home with 2 high efficiency furnaces and Anderson windows. Just not meant to be Alaska! Fortunately, my boss is a snow weenie, so anytime there is a trace of snow we can work from home. Not a bad deal at all!

Couldn't even get hired at Walmart or McDonalds with that look! -
We've been running the gas fireplace non stop when we're home! We are on the budget plan, so we'll deal with this at the end of the year!

Improved Lighting & Magnification Options?
Tom Geiger replied to nitrojunkie's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Anyone have experience with this one? I took the photo at Hobby Lobby, thinking $21.99 minus 40% would be a deal, but only if it's a good tool. I'd rather spend money on the right tool than a bargain. I wear glasses, but only for reading and close up work. I found that those Walmart / Foster Grant cheater glasses also work as a substitute for my prescription in a pinch. I believe I have the 2x. -

A few years ago there was a picture of a guy getting arrested, shirtless, with "SATAN" tattooed across his chest. A comedian did a routine about him and said that tattoo would be a big hit when the guy was in the old folks home! There are folks who just don't understand what sounds good when they are young won't serve them well the rest of their life! -
Paint Booths & Safe Ventilation?
Tom Geiger replied to Synister's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I have a paint booth I made myself about 20 years ago, but I have been looking at the Pace booths. I am considering the 36" unit which is $499. I'm going to finance it by selling a group of valuable kits that I have in my hoard but really don't need. I have models I've already done of these, duplicates and rebuildables of them, so I'd never build anything from these sealed kits. I believe in buying the best tools I can. I can justify a $500 booth because I will use it often for many years. It will help me enjoy the hobby a bit more and safely! -
One aimed at the ground, the other right into your eyes!

Fake model kit box arts
Tom Geiger replied to 57peppershaker's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd buy a couple of these! This Mercedes represents most of the cars that US Army folks brought back to the USA in the 1960s. Any Army Post in the USA, there'd be a bunch of these, trophies from serving in Germany. My father was a US Army officer and we finally went to Germany in 1969, my dad with thoughts of Mercedes in his head. He said we'd bring one back to the states for sure. Then the US military had a "Buy American" campaign, and through a contractor brought a slew of new US cars to the Px stores in Europe. I knew people who bought new Ford LTDs, and my father bought into the hype and instead of getting his once in a lifetime Mercedes, shipped the '66 Valiant back to the US. Years later he admitted he should've bought the Mercedes! -
Maybe nobody noticed that Trosley did the NNL East artwork this year? I'm in touch with George and we were very excited that he'd work with us, since he's a part of our growing up with CarToons. Who didn't try to draw his cars as a kid? His style is iconic. He was a joy to work with. Personable, enthusiastic, on time and he wanted to be sure we got exactly what we wanted. A real professional. As far as CarToons coming back, I dunno but I could ask Trosley and see what's up.

What did you see on the road today?
Tom Geiger replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nothing but salt encrusted modern cars! I was thinking about that as I walked through the parking lot at work. Messy, filthy cars with salt spray all over them from our recent weather. But you don't dare send it through the car wash as your doors and locks will freeze shut over night! I had to force the doors open on both our cars this morning. Frozen shut without being washed! -
No, it is a 1951 Jowett Jupiter but the movie is from "The Fast and the Furious"... what you say? The original was done in 1954. You didn't think that 1991 movie was original?

In Marked For Death, they pass this 1960 Buick Electra several times, and later when Stephen Sagal throws this guy out a window, it's conveniently parked in the alley below!

When do you open your kits?

We all do this and I consider it time spent in the hobby. You don't need to be building something to enjoy yourself. -

That's pretty amazing country Ed! And those are good neighbors. It's a funny thing, when I've been out in Denver or Salt Lake City, you always see the mountains and are in awe, but the locals don't seem to even notice. Then a friend of mine put it in perspective... I used to live at the NJ Shore, in fact drove along the coast for a bit on my daily commute. And yes, I didn't even look half the time. Here's my back yard and a few of my neighbors enjoying our Halloween pumpkin. The lookout only has one horn. These two are around all the time. Photo from my kitchen window. -
Dodged another bullet here near Philly. Snowed overnight but not enough to use the snow blower, which hasn't been out this season. My company delayed opening until 11am, but I had an International conference call at 9-11am, so I am working from home and not dealing with it.

Pyro was founded by William Lester in 1939, and was involved in providing plastic parts for the WWII including aircraft parts. The company was in Union, New Jersey and had a line of ray guns and space toys that are highly collectible today. Bill Lester pretty much perfected the injection molding process, and was known as "The Father of Modern Injection Molding. He sold Pyro in 1972 so he could concentrate on the then new field of tamper proof packaging.
