Yes, stupid won't wash off! I know a guy who is a walking disaster. Screws up every job he's assigned, lies that he's covered details and causes big disasters due to his lack of action, lack of planning, lack of vision or by doing stupid things that any normal person would say is inappropriate. When called on the carpet, he denies any responsibility and flails about, blaming everyone around him, the vendors involved, the position of the sun and the moon... you get the picture! And he wonders why he's not in charge of the world!

I went to the Super September Showdown in Gilbertsville, PA. There was an active sales area so I was able to grab a few things I had been looking for. I wanted a Phantom Vickie to supplement an unfinished kit that I own. They had done a nice job painting the body and interior, but someone had stolen the chassis and engine from that kit. So I was looking for a kit, and found this one for $5. The owner was quick to point out that it was missing the wheels and tires, no problem! And once I got it home to inspect, I found a complete Chevy six from the 1960 pickup kit inside in it's own plastic bag! So add one engine I like from that five dollar bill. Another vendor had this small bag of parts just marked as you see. I quickly recognized it had the flathead six, one of my favorite engines I've been hoarding to build old mopars! It also had the complete later model V8 minus the chrome valve covers and air cleaner. So two nice engines for $3. And I grabbed up this Chrysler Cirrus promo for $15. I've paid a lot more for one of these. I now have a few of these, both the Cirrus and the Stratus models. They are so well done and in plastic. It's a shame that Brookfield is no longer around. And as luck has it, they did both the Cirrus and Stratus, but not the matching Plymouth Breeze. We've owned two of those, so I'm hoping to do a conversion. This one is just too pretty to break up, the dark cherry color is just perfect. So I'll be looking at the others I own. All in all, I got off pretty cheap for being at a swap meet. I did buy everything I saw that I wanted and only spent $23. It just shows that I already have way too much stuff!

1959 Buick "Junior Craftsman" 8/15 More pics
Tom Geiger replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Cars
Love your '59! I have a soft spot for these because I used to own a 1:1 1960 Electra. Here's a primer project of mine, which I was fitting up to work with the Monogram 1959 Chevy kit. Note the windshield surround and roof. I had started with a poorly done early resin body, so I have a lot of time into it just fixing the short shots on the rockers and lower body. I molded in the '59 Chevy rear pan as well, and have the rear bumper and connie kit going there. I later found that the Chevy chassis wasn't appropriate for the Buick and that stalled the project! -
What did you see on the road today?
Tom Geiger replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw this sitting on Route 100 on my way home from the Super September Showdown yesterday. Since I had my camera from being at the show, I decided to stop and take a closer look. The car is in nice shape, and overall well done. It needed a headliner, and the seat work isn't to my taste. But overall a cool car. Notice that it is for sale, although no price was posted. I'm trying not to call the guy! The car in the background is a Pontiac G6 hardtop convertible that had a price of $18,900 on it because it had 6,000 original miles. -
Anyone Have A Sleep Number Bed? Waaaay OT !
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Thank you David! I have ordered the bed and am awaiting a delivery date in the next few weeks. We are excited since neither my wife or I have been sleeping well, or through the night, on our current 10 year old mattress. I tend to sleep on my left shoulder, and I wake up with it aching on a regular basis. I have noticed that I sleep better in motels than at home, so I believe the bed will help me. In fact, I fell asleep on my comfy couch last night and stayed there for the night. No shoulder ache this morning! -
Foil under clear *rant*
Tom Geiger replied to freakshow12's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's not the end of the world if you've cleared over the scripts for the reasons stated. Perfectly reasonable. and not that noticeable on something that small. and an aside... I've noticed a lot of guys don't understand the foil under paint technique. The aim is to foil the scripts as if you were foiling them on top of your final paint coat... that is perfectly trimmed around the letters. I see too many models where the builder just put a jagged large piece of BMF over the scripts, some how thinking that the entire huge piece of foil would disappear under the paint. -
I wonder if R2 listens ?

And he was no doubt upset that this didn't happen within weeks of his suggestion! -
1961 Oldsmobile F85 Station Wagon -now in 'Under Glass'
Tom Geiger replied to maltsr's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Paul, don't forget the two chrome strips across the back glass. You could add strips directly to the back window, the kit doesn't have it. -
Super September Showdown, PA --- Pictures!
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in Contests and Shows
I'm not part of their club, just someone who attends so I don't know. I'd say Norman Veber - Replicas and Miniatures of Md and Ron Bradley because they are part of the host club. Mike's Decals said he was going in a thread on another board. Aside from that, there will be a room full of small dealers and some of their club members selling off stuff. This is actually a good thing because there are always bargains and unusual stuff. I never have a problem spending my money at this show! -
Foil under clear *rant*
Tom Geiger replied to freakshow12's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree. I never clear over foil. As Fred said, the foil has it's own level of shine, that is different from that of the clear paint. The two side by side is the contrast of a 1:1 car. Guys clear over decals on Nascar cars. Back in the day there was a guy at contests in our area whose Nascar cars always won, but had mile deep clear with the decals buried way down there. His models looked more like jewelry than model cars! -
Or just make up a funny name like Roger Hayes!

You jarred an aged memory! My Uncle Tom had a '59 Plymouth and when we were up at his lake house, he'd sit me on his lap and let me 'drive'. I was probably 5 or so and really thought I was driving since I was holding the wheel and steering straight. So I guess that was the first car I ever drove!

What did you see on the road today?
Tom Geiger replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I go into the office once or twice a week. No more than that. I went out to pick up a pizza this evening and realized it was the first time I had left the property since Thursday! -
Electric cars and state and federal gas taxes?
Tom Geiger replied to clovis's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
New Jersey combined all their toll road authorities... NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway into one agency with the theory that having one entity would save money... shortly after that move, they raised the tolls! They tried to convince NJ residents that it didn't affect them because the majority of the tolls paid on these interstates were paid by people passing through the state! -
I have a battery back up on my sump pump just for this reason. It looks like a car battery with a small charger that powers a second pump in my sump well. During Hurricane Sandy much of NJ lost power for days to weeks. My sister in law living in North Jersey, way out of the hurricane and shore area had $50,000 damage to her finished basement. Now she has a battery back up. And what did I get today? RAIN! Planned on spending a lazy day out by the pool. I no sooner stepped in the water and heard thunder off in the distance! Soon enough we were inside for the day.

Electric cars and state and federal gas taxes?
Tom Geiger replied to clovis's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Oh one more... many years ago New Jersey decided to add a tax to the purchase of new trucks. Most large trucking companies aren't just in NJ, so they just adjusted their purchasing to buy their trucks in adjoining states, and avoid the NJ tax. It cost NJ not only the new tax, but the existing sales tax, title fees, registrations etc of having those trucks bought, titled and registered in the state! They nearly put all the big truck dealers out of business before they were pressured into repealing that tax. Brilliant! And don't get me into Governor Jim Florio and the toilet paper tax. At least the press picked up and that and it didn't go through! -
Same can be said for your Avatar!

The releases I am remembering are the two pro street type Barracudas... one molded in blue, the other molded in red which preceded the yellow molded snap car. All of those have huge door handles.

Electric cars and state and federal gas taxes?
Tom Geiger replied to clovis's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Many years ago in New Jersey they got the bright idea to double the registration cost on SUVs because they were obviously luxuries that people really didn't need, so they should be taxed. In the days when the average registration was $35-45 for cars, suddenly SUV registrations started at $100. The stupid part was that they included mini vans in the definition of SUV. So all the families who had the modern equivalent of station wagons, got hit. I had a Caravan and my Geo Tracker at the time and both got hit with this stupid tax. Another thing that's popular is voting in taxes on people who can't vote. Florida had a deal where they were taxing people who were moving to the state by charging them $500 to title an out of state car. The bright stars in office got that through since current voters didn't care since it didn't effect them. They reasoned that people moving into Florida would sell their cars before moving and buy new cars in Florida to avoid this tax. I don't think it worked. -
Trading model collection for non model items
Tom Geiger replied to ridinframe's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
It could be good if someone is getting out of the hobby and wants to trade his model stuff for things related to a new hobby. Over the years I've had a few guys who left the hobby contact me to sell their hoard. In those cases it was unfortunate that they wanted way too much money for the entire mess, much of it cheap easily found kits I already had multiples of. -
and of course none of those idjuts giving advice even owned a car!

Nothing kills the modeling motivation like..........
Tom Geiger replied to Jantrix's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
When I moved from NJ to PA, I moved ahead of my wife so I had nothing to do at all in the evenings. I was going home on weekends, so I loaded my workbench into the van and brought down my collection one van load at a time. I had almost no furniture in the house back then, so I'd spend evenings up in the hobby room, working on models, and watching the TV I bought at Good Will! Life was good. I'd come home the four evenings a week I was there, eat something and hit the hobby room. You don't need the model clean room to build. A guy in my club moved into a house and hired a carpenter to build him a large bench to his specs, along with a spray booth and everything you think you'd need to build championship models. I went to see and he showed me quarts of Ferrari red paint and Duesenberg engine paint he had bought for his planned projects. He lived there about 10 years and never produced a single model! In comparison, back in the time I was between model rooms due to construction, I built one of my best models ever at the kitchen table! I worked evenings, covering my table with a small board to work on and I had a clamp on light. Every night I had to put everything away and on top of the refrigerator so small kids wouldn't get into it. And I built a great award winning, magazine feature model there, under those conditions. So it's really what you make of it!
