I love '70 Cougars. I have owned them in real life for over a quarter century now. I still have one in the garage that needs a loving restoration if my health and finances hold out. I haven't bought a lot of resin kits lately, because I have a backlog of kits to build, but a '70 Cougar coming back would push me over the edge. I would need at least two of them to build my long lost "babies". One for street and one for strip! It wouldn't be complete, though until I lit it up with the sequential turn signals. Last time I drove my red '70 before selling it, I got pulled over by a young cop who thought I had some illegal aftermarket flasher system in the car. Luckily, an older officer stopped by to look at the car while it was pulled over and explained that his Dad had one of those when he was a little kid, and the lights were supposed to do that!

Basic concept of decanting Tamiya or Testors spray laquers. Glue a straw (Bendable if you have one) to the nozzle of the spray can. spray the contents of the can into a jar and shoot it through your airbrush. If you find the color you want in a spray can, this is the way to go. Dr Cranky has a video of how to do it. This way, the paint is already thinned and ready to go. You get the color you can only find in a spray can and you apply it with the control of an airbrush. Best thing for airbrushing is practice, practice, practice. Change one variable at a time and take notes. It will get better the more you practice.

If they fix the roof, I'm buying a bunch. If they don't, I'm out. I bracket raced Fox body Mustangs in a few different classes. I drove Fox body Mustangs to work for the best part of a decade and a half, I made out with the love of my life in a Fox Body Mustang. My God Daughter was born in the front seat of a Fox body Mustang. I want to all of my reunions in them (Except for the time I had a Capri) Both of my college era steady girlfriends had Mustangs... While the car is not as iconic as a '57 Chevy, or the first generation Mustangs, it was the functional car for a whole generation of car nuts. I wouldn't mind a few on my shelf, but they gotta look a bit like the real thing.

Hopefully somebody will print the decals for that one too. But then I would have to buy another one of these kits. I did one of these when they were released as an ssp kit during the '90s. I also had the street machine version from a few years later. They build up nicely and are a really pretty kit once you clean off the acre or two of flash on them. It's a lot of work, but it is a great old tool. I'm glad to see it back. I would build the BRE racing version, and probably a street version. Revell is really going after my Money this quarter. Thank Goodness they aren't releasing the 240Z or I would go broke...

I built a couple of these a long time ago. They are simple, but like most of the JoHans of the era, they build up into very nice looking models. Great shelf models.

Looks great. If it was 1/25, I would already be sending Paypals to anybody named Meng! I have just been trying to purge my collection of 1/24 kits, but this would really look great with a Galaxie trailer and updated Monogram sprint car. Lots of light commercial and scratchbuilding opportunities with a 350 too. Lots of these are used for parking lot maintainance and snow removal up here with a plow and salting equipment. Lots of contractors use them for everything from electrical to plumbing. I see a nice welding truck here. I also could scratch a utility box for it. I'll have to see the price, and decide if an off scale kit is worth it to me, but I really like what I am seeing.

8th Annual 24 Hour Build January 25th and 26th!
DaveM replied to Terry Sumner's topic in Community Builds
Lots of neat models everybody. I fell a bit short, timewise. I had to back up and disassemble a few things to make it fit together correctly. I will finish it off this week and take a couple of pictures of it. (Not real sharp closeups though. It WAS a 24 hour build after all.) I had lots of fun and I am looking forward to next year. -
Great! Thanks for the info. I'll pick one up tomorrow. I just didn't want to lay out 24 bucks to find out that they had deleted the stock parts by surprise. Thanks again, Dave
-
I see these are in the stores now. I looked at the box, and I see no mention of 2 in 1 or any such thing. I know the other foose kits tend to have the stock parts in them, but I wanted to make sure this one does before I drop the cash on it. I am hoping so, because I want to complete my "Impala Row with a couple of 65s. Thanks, Dave

8th Annual 24 Hour Build January 25th and 26th!
DaveM replied to Terry Sumner's topic in Community Builds
What are we all building for this? I was just about to do a 1966 Royal GTO Tiger , but I looked at the decals in the new issue. They have one black and one white decal. I thought I was missing a sheet, but the instructions show the car being built with one black and one white side. Not sure what Revell was thinking here... I will have to put this kit aside and source some aftermarket decals for it. (And source out the slicks and headers that are missing now.) Now I am going to go to the stash, which was the whole purpose of this build in the first place. (Whittle the stash down by one kit per year!) I have a stack pulled out with some recent reissues like the 78 Pacer, 76 Gremlin, 60 Ranchero, 70 Impala, AMT 55 Chevy and Nomad. 55 Ford Pickup (in 1/24 and bright red plastic!) 56 Ford Pickup, and a few others. I also have some newer kits, including the 72 Cutlass, 62 Vette, 50 Olds, 66 El Camino, 62 Bel Air, 62 Impala, 66 Nova, 69 Nova, 55, 56 and 57 Chevy kits from Revell's '90s era tooling, Revell 58 Chevy, Hemi Cuda, 57 Ford, Revell Beetle, Hemi Dart, Thunderbolt and many countless others. (I really have to trim the stash!!!) I am really looking at the 66 El Camino, 70 Impala, 55 Ford Pickup, 72 Cutlass and 69 Nova. I have never built the Nova, Elky or Cutlass before. I remember hearing good things about the El Camino. How are the Cutlass and Nova? Any real hangups on either one? In a perfect world, I would fix the wheel openings on the Nova, but for this build I would stop being a rivet counter for 24 hours. I also keep staring at the 51 Chevy Convertible kit... The pickup would be cool because It is a street machine, and I can paint it any color and detail it any way I want and be correct. (No time in a 24 hour build to research reference material for every part you paint.) Any dire warnings about why I shouldn't build one of these? I will make the final decision when I get home tonight. THen I will get rested up for the build. Let's all have fun with this! p.s. Our low temp Sat. night is going to be 6 degrees below zero Fahrenheit! It will take a little extra effort to do the painting in this weather. -
8th Annual 24 Hour Build January 25th and 26th!

I think the Monogram indycars were pretty decent. I have a few, but never built one. I saw several completed back in the day, though and they all looked pretty nice. I know the AMT ones were pretty fiddly. The Monogram ones seemed to use a generic chassis with different engines and bodywork IIRC. Seems like the year after all of the indycars came out, the Junior classes around here were full of the Monogram ones. That's usually a good sign. Hopefully somebody else here has actually built one and can pitch in. -
Rolex 24 At Daytona starts Saturday!
DaveM replied to Speedfreak's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I will watch the start and finish (No fs2 here) and I will also be building! The 24 hour build is the same day, and should be a lot of fun. I hope they at least update it and have a couple of highlights during the night portion. Watching a race and building a model is always a good time. -
Putting on tires without breaking suspension
DaveM replied to bigbluesd's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Same here. I sand down the shaft and/or open the hole until I have a smooth, but not loose fit. I take the ridge off until the part no longer "snaps" into place. Whether I put the wheels on the suspension before or after it is installed on the chassis depends upon several things. If the suspension is built up with separate spindles and A arms, it might be safer to put the wheels on after the whole suspension has been assembled on to the chassis. When gluing wheels on, make sure that they are straight and level. Sometimes it is easier to get the body over the chassis without the wheels in the way. Unfortunately, these are usually the cars that make it hard to attach the wheels afterwards too. (Lowered cars with larger wheels where the wheel has to be worked up into the wheel well to attach it.) -
Createx Wicked Colors Paint Questions
DaveM replied to Jc cline's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks, that's just the information I needed. I read the other thread where you mentioned that you used Wicked Colors. I am glad to know that they will work well. Sounds like they should work well for masking two tones too? Thanks again, Dave -
Createx Wicked Colors Paint Questions
DaveM replied to Jc cline's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have a new huge set of Wicked colors paints and a pint bottle of regular reducer. (Christmas present from Cathie to reduce my use of stinky lacquers) I am finally getting my airbrush station set up this week. (Almost done) I plan on doing the 24 hour build next weekend, but I need to learn the new paint system well enough finish a model in 24 hours. I have never used these paints, so I am in for a fast lesson! I am using a Badger Anthem 155 with a Pancake compressor. I can reliably paint with 50 p.s.i. for a body or so without kicking the compressor back on. I tend to spray lacquers and acrylics under 35 psi, but I can adjust that to whatever works with these paints. I know some of you get terrific results with Wicked paints. How fast do they set up, and how hard are they to mask? Do they leave a big ridge that can't be feathered like Createx paints, or do they work a bit better? Any tips or tricks on thinning and spraying to keep from making a total mess of my first project. I won't be able to get the premium reducer, or neutral base until after the 24 hour build, but if either of those are needed to get better results later on, I will spring for them. Do I need to break out a hair dryer like the Createx paints, or will that cause these to wrinkle (Or burst into flame?) I will still probably prime with Tamiya or Plastikote primers, and I will probably have to clearcoat with lacquer for the time being. I am guessing that the wicked colors are going to build up in very thin layers and the gloss will be provided by a clear topcoat. Do you ever use a wet coat with these or not? If they work out well, I will get some more colors, and maybe try Auto Air, since it can be mixed with them. Thanks in advance for your help, Dave -
I got one! The AMT Ford LN-8000 Race Car Hauler!
DaveM replied to schwack's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
My frame was a slight bit warped, but nothing some careful assembly wouldn't pull back straight. The bed seemed pretty close to flat. I think it was more of a packaging issue than a molding issue with my kit. I see I am not the first person to think of matching up the ramp body with the C-series cab. I found a couple of old photos of C-Series ramp trucks in real scale, so I know the idea is not too far out. I bet it would be able to be adapted to Lindberg's Dodge Tilt cab too. I was also thinking about the possibility of mating it up with the Modelhaus Chevy medium duty truck. ('64 or '65?) Lots of ways to build this one. I may have to buy an extra one for the stash! (And I can always find a use for a leftover Louisville cab and chassis too) -
Drooooooooooooool!!! Love the paint. And I agree, Nice Barge. Those old land yachts always seem to look really nice in dark colors, but those big flat panels show off every little flaw too. Your surface prep and paint are flawless! I built one of these a long time ago and finished it in light metallic blue. It was okay, but nothing like yours! Great job on a tough old kit!

I am looking forward to the Sox and Martin Cuda. I built the Johan version a couple decades ago. If they fix the fender flares, this will be a "must have" kit for another Sox and Martin car, and a couple more for other race and street/strip projects. (440 powered bracket car?) I am waiting to see if Revell fixes their Mustang body. If they fix it, I am in for at least three or four of the drag version. These can be backdated to street machines too. I will be grabbing a couple of the 510s. I hope they reissue the 240z someday too, as they would make a neat pair. I also might grab a 58 'vette just to keep my 62 company. I have enough of the 59 Impalas in my stash to last a lifetime, so I won't be buying any more, but It is a cool kit. In the end, Revell always seems to end up with some of my money!

8th Annual 24 Hour Build January 25th and 26th!
DaveM replied to Terry Sumner's topic in Community Builds
I am still in on this one. I have the fans set up so I can airbrush, unless the weather is incredibly nasty. I will be flying solo, but I will try to post a few times during the build. I still don't know which kit I will build for this, but I will go with a conventional kit with a body and interior. I have a 72 Cutlass, 69 Nova, 70 Impala, 64 Thunderbolt, 60 Vette, 70 Cuda, 50 Olds, 66 Fairlane 51 Chevy, 72 GMC, 55 Ford Pickup and many other possible kits, I might want something with a bucket style interior, to save a couple of steps in the painting and assembling procedure. Maybe I should use up one of the Monogram kits that I never seem to build any more. (1/24 scale) Whatever I pick, I can thin the stash and get one on the shelf. That is always a good thing. 10 days to go! -
Amt truck reissues I'd like to see
DaveM replied to Bennyg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with the International S, and the Mack R. (I would buy quite a few copies of any Mack they released.) I will probably get at least two copies of any reissues, just to add to the stockpile. Keep bringing them out, and I will keep buying them. -
8th Annual 24 Hour Build January 25th and 26th!
DaveM replied to Terry Sumner's topic in Community Builds
No wife, so no stinkeye here... But I am taking care of an elderly relative, and staying in their house. If the weather is pretty nice, I can paint in an upstairs bathroom that is going to be remodeled this spring. Still deciding what to build. I my just pick something from the stash at the last minute. I have lots to choose from right now. I could pull out a Pacer or Gremlin and make a "close enough" box stock build. I have several old NASCAR kits from the '90s. (I would have to choose a single color paint scheme and really build fast for one of those) I have some old Monogram musclecars, Lots of street rod kits... Whatever I pick, it should be a lot of fun. -
That "woodless woody" would make a really neat build. I know from anecdotes that the old wagons are prone to birds nests and also usually home to more than a few wasps and hornets. It would take a lot of scratchbuilding, but this would be a cool idea for a diorama, either rotting in a field, or the start of a rebuild in somebody's driveway. Thanks for the very informative picture.

Funny thing about Painting
DaveM replied to booboo60's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My first few paint jobs after I started wearing bifocals were abysmal. I finally set up brighter lights, and learned to deal with it. I am getting better at sanding too . I am also getting much pickier about my surface prep, and that is helping my paint jobs. It still comes down to "win some, lose some" The good thing is as I get older, I don't notice the flaws as much either. (Or care as much, I'm not sure which.) -
5 model cars or trucks you wish were made.
DaveM replied to ranma's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll play too. All with a factory stock version... 1; '71-'73 Buick Riviera 2; 1955 Pontiac Safari 3; 1936 Ford Pickup 4; Mack "B" series trucks 5; First Generation Barracudas... I could have picked lots of others, like early Falcons, '40 Chevies, Volkswagen fastbacks and squarebacks... Econoline vans, early Chevy vans, but these look to be the most fun. -
Monogram's Garbage Truck showrod has a couple of guitar players, but I can't remember if they had separate guitars, or if they were cast in one piece.
