What is with the 50s?
george 53 replied to 50smania's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I know, caz they REALLY DO have some GREAT kits! But whats the difference 'tween a 55 Pontiac anna 56? Pics would REALLY be a big help! As far as the 60's kits go, I CAN remember what they look like, but I DO get tripped up on the 50's kits, caz if a relative or my Dad didn't own one, I'm kinda in the dark 'bout what they looked like! -

Harry, If you haven't seen anything from Motor City Resins, or Missing Link, your in for a BIG surprise! They may not have as much variety of kits as Modelhaus(YET), but the QUALITY of their stuff'll give the Modelhaus a run for their money ANY DAY!!! I personally feel that they are among the BEST in the resin casting buisness an they are BOTH GREAT guys to deal with! Like I said, they MAY NOT have as wide a selection of kits, but they are EVERY BIT as good, if NOT BETTER than ANYONE else out there! You REALLY should check them out, their castings are FLAWLESS!!!! -

Guys, just got an E-Mail this morn from someone named James Burling. Looks like he puts out a newsletter of some sort on model cars. ANYONE ever heard or know anything about him/this? I haven't deleted it, but I'm not sure on if it's legit or wat. If one of you guys could give me a little background on it/him I'd GREATLY appericiate it, caz I'm ALWAYS open to new model stuff, just DON'T wanna get scammed or played. Can anyone help? If not then it goes in the JUNK/DELETE file!

What is with the 50s?
george 53 replied to 50smania's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
50's I THINK the main problem is that the 50's are just TOO long ago to be mainstream anymore. 32 Fords ARE the quintessential Hot Rod, thus their popularity. There are just TOO MANY 50's cars that would be popular, an the model co.s can't afford to pop what they DON'T know what would sell. I myself am a 60's Muscle Car person, cas THAT'S what I know. Some of the older guys would LOVE to see some 50's models, but WHICH ones! I did buy the 57 Chrysler, 58 Edsel, an so on, but only cas if I DON'T they just might NOT pop anything else from that era, an bein a model guy, I wanna see as many NEW kits as they can make! I just don't think a 55 Pontiac Starchief or Plymouth Savoy is on their list of good sellers. I'D buy a coupla each, but I don't make the decisions on what they pop. But I do like those cars, and they're BOTH available in resin. Oh, an could you PLEASE add your name to your sig? It makes for much friendlier conversation. -
fender flares 57 chevy nomad
george 53 replied to One_Track_Mind's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Brian, the purpose of a flare is cover a wheel so it does not protrude beyond the edge of the fender, so they usually are hollow. Flares ought to cover said wheel. Your look SOLID like they were just added for no particular reason but to be there. IF they wre ACTUAL flares, they would STILL allow the wheel to sit INSIDE them. Your look like they only move the OUTSIDE of the fender farther out. If you had used the rear or even the front fenders from a VW bug,you would have gotten close to the same look ,but they would have been functional. If you hollow what you have OUT then you'd have fully functional flares. Right now they just look like bulges on the side of your car. I'm NOT trying to be mean, but you DID ask so, I HOPE you take MY OPINION as constructive, and NOT a knock on your build. Like I said, you DID A VERY nice job on the top chop, so it looks like you do know what your doin. You just might be confused on the purpose of them. Like I said, they look like they're made of Bondo, so they shouldn't be too hard to hollow out, and make them look AND be functional. I REALLY hope you DON'T take my advice as critisism. -
I just picked up a 72 Elky from Jimmy in April , at our MCCC toy show for 10 bucks. It's JUST the body though, an NOT a complete kit like yours. So far it's been just a simple conversion to the plastic kit parts. His stuff is pretty easy to work with, there IS some clean up required, as with most of his stuff, but they ARE NICE accurate castings. If I'da seen your body, I'da bought it to, caz I LIKE elkys!!! She's lookin good so far, it'll be nice to see when it's done!

Jon, that "Other" mag has a VERY good article in it this month, by Tim Boyd, about how to section bodies. Just a plain simple sectioning job would do wonders with that body. And with the roof chopped that drasticly, it would take the height out of the body. I think it'll look good like that, but thats just me!
