Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think the person who made this beholden a few drinks before they put this thing together. Just my humble opinion. Dan

I use Future for all the clear coating on the models that I clear coat and I have never had a problem with it. I don't know what happened in your case though. It looks like what was said, the color had not completely dried before you used the Future. Dan P.S. I use Testors little bottle paints almost exclusively which are enamel by the way.

How long have you been modeling?
59 Impala replied to wvsm's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, lets see now. It's been 54 or 55 years now for me. I started when I was 9 or 10 years old building airplanes and I turned to building cars and trucks and I've loved it ever since. Dan -
Get well soon Ed. My prayers go out to you for a speedy recovery. Dan

I used the frog tape on this Studebaker. I masked out the green to paint the black and I didn't wet the tape at all, and I got a very sharp line between the colors. I guess you can wet it but I don't think that I will take the chance of messing up the paint job. Just my opinion. Dan

I've used the yellow frog tape. It's the same as Tamiya's tape in my opinion, but a whole lot cheaper and it will last a lot longer. I bought the 2 inch size that comes in a plastic container to help keep out dust and dirt from the edges. I'm sold on it for model use that's for sure. Dan

Very nice work Joe. I like them all. I'm not to crazy about lowriders but I like the work that you did on all of these vehicles. I especially like the weathered models. Again, great work. Dan

Bear, nice build, and I like it. To be a cancer survivor and have someone make something for you is very thoughtful and kind of you. It says a lot about yourself. I'm sure that the person is very thankful and it shows how much you care for them. I'm not very good at finding the right words sometime for something and I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Great job. Dan

Ian, the way I did some is I used Testors clear parts glue and put one coat over the chrome, let it dry and then put on another coat over that and that gave the chrome light a lens look to it. Sometimes ya might have to use three coats of glue but it looks better than chrome. Hope this helps ya. Dan

Expired paint?
59 Impala replied to shatteredsoul76's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't know how long it's been since Testors quit making the PLA enamel paints, but I had a bottle of the green that was opened years ago. I kept the lid on tight and when I opened it, it was still good and I used that paint to paint the 53 Ford with the Packard tail lights on it with no problem. The price of that bottle was 10 cents, so that gives ya a clue of how old that bottle was. Dan -

Here's how: Buckeye Classic Model Car Contest Sponsorship Buckeye Scale Auto Club is having a model car contest in Columbus. We are a well established Columbus area model car club with 30 years of modeling excellence. Now is your opportunity to get in on the ground floor of what promises to be the premiere model car contest in the state of Ohio. We have several members that compete in contests regularly and have appeared in national publications as well as having put on shows in the past. This event will take place on March 27, 2011 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Conference Center 4900 Sinclair Rd. There will be a contest judged by participant vote with a vendor area in a 4000 square foot room. Both national model car publications have been invited to attend as well as some model manufacturers who have accepted our invitation. Well known resin car and parts manufacturers and other accessory retailers will be present. This is adult run contest for what is mainly an adult hobby. Most of the participants are 40+ year old males with discretionary income from the local area. We expect a minimum of 70 participants, 50 vendors, and at least as many shoppers as participants in the vendor area. This is an opportunity to bring your business to their attention by sponsoring our event. There are several levels of involvement for you to choose from. A full event sponsor allows you top billing on our flyers, banners, posters, and a class sponsorship. It allows you to promote your business 100% at this venue. For example, the contest would be “The Buckeye Classic Model Car Contest presented by your business†in all references to the show. Your company’s name would also appear on the coveted “Best of Show†trophy. The cost for this is $600. An associate sponsor would receive second billing to the club in all references to the show. For example, “The Buckeye Classic Model Car Contest presented by the Buckeye Scale Auto Club and your business.†You could post banners and include flyers for your business in participant “Goodie†bags. You will also receive a class sponsorship described below. This level of sponsorship would require a $250 commitment. A class sponsorship would allow you advertise in the area where the class you are sponsoring is located and will put your company’s name on the trophy. For example, if your business were to sponsor the street rod class, the placards for that class would read “Street Rod Class presented by your business†and the trophies would read “1st place Street Rod presented by your business.†You would also be able to place a banner advertising your business at the edge of the table where the cars for that class are located. Class sponsorship is a $25 commitment. You can sponsor on multiple levels and multiple times to maximize your opportunity to promote your business. This promises to be the beginning of the premiere model car event in the state of Ohio and you can be in on the ground floor. Let us promote your business to potential customers through our venue, on our flyers, as well as local and national media. See the bottom of this page for sponsorship opportunities! Here's my 67 Chevelle SS Dan -
Well, I don't use urathanes but I do use Future or Testors clear coat sometime. On this car I didn't use either on it and you can see the result. Just kiddin guys. As far as paint goes, I mostly use Testors little bottle paints (enamel) and I get very good results for me. All of the paint jobs that I have done were done with the enamels. I don't use the other paints because of cost. I've been out of work for two years now and I use what I have in stock and that's Testor's paints. On this Ford I used no clear at all. I just polished it with Novus polishing system. It is painted with the Testors enamel thru an airbrush. I think it looks good for a 50's custom. It's not overly shiny. I used to paint machines and cars and have used urathanes and I was scared of that stuff. We had to use the full body suit with an air tube to feed air to us and I never liked that. Just my 2 cents here to try a lighten things up a bit. All work and no play makes you a dull boy. Plus I think it's right to think of the youngins who read this stuff. Dan

Rough year for classic cars

"I'll paint any car, any color for $29.95. No Ups! No Extras!" -Earl Scheib Or, how about "I'll paint any car, any color for $19.95. No Ups! No Extras!" -Earl Scheib Now, that, I remember back in Akron Ohio back in the late 50's and early 60's. My cousin took his 56 Ford to him and had it painted Red. In two weeks the paint was falling off in BIG chunks. They painted everthing except the glass. Now, the car was Blue and when that Red was falling off it sure looked funny. Goes to show ya, ya get what you pay for. Dan -
Yep, they both are a workin now. Thank you very much. 'El Presidente' Dan P.S. Nice builds by the way.

All I can say is, it's just the same as last year. Two years of lay off and nothing in sight. Dan
