2012 POST APOCALYPSE/ZOMBIE HUNTER COMMUNITY BUILD
ZombieHunter26 replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Community Builds
Alright guys. I've gotten slightly better(thanks to my wonderful friend Naproxen!) and I'm ready to start getting back into the swing while my head is allowing me to function as a normal human being rather than trudging about in a near zombified state(iseewutyoudidthar!). I'm going in a slightly different direction this time around, and instead of building something from the ground up... ...I'm going to be finishing 2 of my dad's(62rebel) builds. I visited him today, and after some discussion about models and techniques(as most of our conversations go nowadays ) he handed me a box with two builds he'd thrown together a few months ago and simply said "take these and finish 'em!". As I can recall, he's only trusted me to finish something art-wise of his one other time in my life- which was AT LEAST two decades ago when he had me finish a comic strip he had outlined for him to kind of guide my hand artistically. I attribute almost ALL of my artistic talents to the guidance and support he's blessed me with over the years, so as you can guess, I'm taking this as an honor. The next two builds I will be posting will be a collaboration of sorts between my father and myself. He's done 99% of the build on one model, and from what I can see about 85% one the other, so my charge is to slightly alter and or add to the builds. I will also be giving these builds their final touches and paint jobs. Those of you who know my father know he's not one for posting images, and that's his own personal choice- so this will also be a unique opportunity for you guys out there to see his style of build in a roundabout kind of way, mixed with a few of my personal touches. I will post some photos later in the day, once I wake up and get out of the "I just woke up" funk. Keep your eyes peeled! EDIT: I will also be coming up with some back stories to complement each vehicle. -

Well, my next PAZH build is covered up front with green modelling putty- Gotta blend in the styrene sheeting and whatnot. At this point, you wouldn't be able to tell what I'm planning, and at the moment I'm out of primer and sandpaper, so at this point I'm not gonna be taking pics :[ What I CAN say, is that it looks like a big green pile of...something. -
Here's a recent one! Like, last year. Yes, I sport a fedora sometimes. A little longer ago, before I lost a little weight- one of the many jobs I've had( I hated the uniform) I -kind- of look the same.
-
Thanks for all the kind words! It's good to wake up to updates like this
-
Amen to THAT, brother. Case in point, all my PAZH CBP builds... turn out amazing. My seriously SERIOUS builds? Not so much.

7)When cutting an intricate piece from a sprue, the knife will take the path of MOST resistance- directly through the piece, and right into your thumb. 8)On the topic of knives and split fingers- The knife will miss your fingers 90% of the time when you've got a full box of bandages, but when you lose that box your fingers' mortality rate goes up about 50%!

The plan is to build a barn front diorama for it, and add debris and more 'dirt' to the build, but that's gonna take me a while as I scrounge up the materials for it (and possibly a reference photo of a certain barn from long ago....). For now, it's done! Lemme know what you guys think!

more past the break...
-
Got the 'dust' done, glass, and the rest of the assembly done (at one point one of the driver side lights popped right off, but I fixed that after I took pics)... Here's the progress- more past the break...
-
Thanks Dad & Jeff! I'm glad you like it. I can still go in and add the insert details, it's not quite done just yet I had a little trouble getting '30 reference photos for the proper aging- google is chock full of customs and rods built from this particular car- but I did manage to find a few to help with the exterior rust. I'll be going back to the workbench later on to poke and prod at it a bit more- as well as add the glass
-
So here is the next step, what I call the "clean age" stage. Basically, I put my brown shades down with a sponge brush over the primer coat. Stippled, not stroked- strokes give lines, not blotches. (we should all know that rust doesn't have a "stroke pattern" ) I then took the time to brush on body colors into the areas the sponge brush would not cover, and then stippled the rest of the body accordingly. I then detail painted, and took the time to give some thought to larger rust blotches. I then assembled the major assemblies, with the exception of the trunk and roof (to allow for touchups in the trunk and glass assembly). After that, I gave it a Dullcote. Here's the result so for, a total of 12 hours build time. The next step is to dirty the interior, body, and chassis accordingly. After that, I will be assembling the glass, roof, and trunk. Keep checking in!

Hey UberDeath322- My Mystery Vehicle was named Valiant Steed, I have since added the Europan Alien Attack Drone/Diorama and the UNIT 283 technical truck. Just thought I'd help ya out there -
Here's the primer! I used the last of my black primer last on the technical truck and the '40 pickup, so this one got the grey automobile primer(the last of it!) treatment. Keep your eyes peeled, more progress once I get it.

Monogram's re-release of the '30 Ford Coupe is replacing the '40 custom pickup on account of an accident with some spilled MEK >.<.... Gonna do what I can to salvage it, but from what it looks like I won't be doing the shiny build. In its absence, I will be building the '30 coupe. The plan is to give it a nice, aged feel. Think 'barn rescue'. I'm gonna pull all my stops and tricks, and make this one -really- nice. I've got it all pre-assembled in sections, like I always do before I prime it. Once the primer dries I'll take some pics! In addition, I put all the chrome bits on prior to priming, because I will be painting them over with one of my acrylic metal colors (I find they are easier to age than straight chrome). In a bit, I will get the pictures up!

2012 POST APOCALYPSE/ZOMBIE HUNTER COMMUNITY BUILD

Thanks Doc. As I've said, coming from you, that's an honor. If the ground outside dries up enough, I'll be sifting some of the dirt from the unpaved drive out front for the dioramas... It's been pretty "UGH" outside the past few days... Currently working up the '40 Ford Custom in the meantime.... but that's most likely gonna be another shiny attempt (EDIT) I bought testors gloss cote with some leftover car console change the other night, perhaps my coays will turn out better with not-so-cheap stuff! Great Work everyone! -

UNIT 283 reporting in for duty- You can find more on the stand-alone topic in 'on the workbench' here- http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=55024&hl=&fromsearch=1 Enjoy! -
This build isn't done, the VEHICLE is, but I have to make a diorama base for it for photo ops Yes, yes it is. Can't have too much protection! I hope you enjoyed this build, I'm still working on it so keep checking in! I think I might add shell casings in the bed, and some burn marks and bullet impacts later on. Not to forget the photo op base either!

The technical has a name now, Unified Improvised Taskforce vehicle 283 (UNIT 283). The argument that the Geneva convention wouldn't apply to the situation of post-apocalypse, keep in mind that this build is DURING the conflict, and the marking and rules would still apply. I foam-brushed the green overcoat on with my stippling technique, and detailed the body with a fine brush. I used a flicking technique (after I masked the windshield) to lay down the initial dirt and mud spatter, and finely misted Krylon Camouflage ultra flat sand for the dust cover. The decals are customized and layered. The armor panel covering the rear window has two 'FIRE PANEL' decals, on is slightly damaged, e other is hidden behind the seat of the gunner system. UNIT 283 is placed on the passenger rear panel, and 'T-16576' is placed on both doors opposite the handles. You can't make it out because I don't have a good light source or high enough res camera, but an M4 Carbine is laying across the passenger seat. Here are the pics- more past the break...

My style incorporates many different things. First, I almost -never- build shiny. I think I've built a total of 3 so far, out of 11 this year. Secondly, my basecoats. I don't just rely on primer, I do an entire basecoat for all my militaristic builds (as shown for the first time in detail on my '72 Chevy Technical in 'on the workbench') to give all the non-engine components an aged, bare metal feel. Most of my details are brush painted with miniature acrylics, and I have a preference for my foam-brush technique (stippling) for a majority of my color basecoats. Third (but first in the process) is my detail pieces. You never know just what I'll incorporate into my details. A previous build for example, 842 Grievous Wound, was made from a Chevy Van roof, a nascar body, the engine from a Bell Huey Helicopter, Lego bits, and SEVERAL bits and pieces from my scrap/spare box. The axles were even scratched from leftover sprues. I also use random bits from toys, household items, and cheap quarter machine stuff. Lastly, I have a tendency to go over the top on a lot of things. Sometimes my 'it's good enough' switch forgets to trip itself! Sometimes I'll start something, and because I can't quite place what's missing, it will sit until I can find the right piece or detail for it. Other than that, I'm not sure what else makes me stand out in the crowd... Cranky? You got anything I may have missed?

Love the slide. The music makes the pictures even more awesome!
