  1. Hi gang. After a 6 week hiatus of travelling, visiting friends in North Carolina, and a week in Disneyworld with my grandson, I'm happily back at my workbench. I picked up a resin '58 Oldsmobile convertible kit from The Modelhaus and am adding it to my "1958 build mission". This kit came with a full width continental kit. I have so far sanded off the lettering on the hood & trunk, along with the door handles & wipers. I'll replace those with pieces from my parts stash. I painted the body with Tamiya Pink for a real 50's feel. I'll be putting on chrome reversed wheels with pink painted wheel spyders also from Modelhaus. Pics of the painted body follow. I still have to give it another coat as I had to sand some "schmutz" spots. I also have to paint the connie kit pieces and the dashboard which I only took out of the Westley Bleche White bath today and they're drying. The interior will be done in pink and black with maybe a little white thrown in. Thanks for looking in on this new project.
  2. Hey Tom... Not really much of a "world tour"... I spent 5 weeks in NC at Tom Valenta's place and a week at the Mouse House in Orlando. It's great to be back home, to sleep in my own bed, and being back at my workbench. I picked up a resin '58 Olds kit from Modelhaus at NNL East and am working on that. I'll have a WIP thread up on that shortly.
  3. Yeah I have that issue of Car Model magazine too. I always wanted to try to make that working convertible top mechanism too but never attempted it. I saw the one that Bill Geary made, but I believe he said that he couldn't find material for the top that would fold properly in scale.
  4. Scalecoat is a safe product for stripping paint from resin bodies & parts.
  5. That's a great looking truck Dan.
  6. As Tony N. stated above, model cars used to be in the 1;1 car magazines like Rod & Custom, Custom Rodder and Street Rodder. Those magazines opted to drop their model car sections because they felt that the page and a half or so that the model cars took up would be better used by another page and a half of advertising.... I don't subscribe to any of those mags any more because they're like getting a catalog in the mail every month. It's all about the advertising revenue, just like any magazine.
  7. Tom you are a madman... I knew you'd do something cool with that camper insert. I can't wait to see how this beast turns out.
  8. Hi gang. I'm visiting my buddy, Tom Valenta, at his home in Hendersonville, NC. I've been here since the day after the NNL East show. It has been raining like hell here for a week, with another week of rainy days to come in the forecast. I picked up some cool stuff at the NNL as usual. I'll be continuing my "1958 build mission" with a '58 Oldsmobile convertible kit that I picked up from The Modelhaus. If it is possible to get in a dry day here I'll be able to prime it and maybe even paint it. It will eventually be painted Tamiya Pink, with a pink, black and white interior. The kit comes with a full continental kit so I'm thinking that another mild custom might be coming down the pike. Only a couple of '58's left to go after this one. I think that once the Olds is done I'll be jumping back a couple of years and working on some 56's. I also picked up a '56 Plymouth and a '56 DeSoto promo at the NNL. I'll have to get some resin replacement stuff from Modelhaus for them. I also have a '56 Olds and Pontiac promo, along with kits of the '56 Chevy, the Nomad, Ford Fairlane, and Chrysler, so it looks like I'll be busy with the '56 builds for the rest of the year. Well, I hope that the weather is better wherever YOU are and that you all get some good modeling done.
  9. Depending on the curves of the glass, on some cars you can try making glass from clear acetate.
  10. Very, very cool looking John. You CAN get it all done...... you know you can..!!!
  11. The Gangbusters '28 Lincoln kit has rifles, shotgun, pistols (45 & 38) & hand grenades. The axe probably wouldn't be too hard to scratchbuild from plastic.
  12. John, that looks really great. I can't wait to see it on Saturday.
  13. Very nice wagon Al. Those 50's beauties are great.
  14. Nice looking build Dave.
  15. Good job overall James. Each model you build should get a little better in each of the areas you outlined in your "firsts". We all started out the same way James, so don't sweat it.
  16. Yeah......What he said.
  17. Beautiful car Rod. It's my son-in-law's favorite car. I built him a model of it, but it is nowhere as well detailed as yours is. Great job.
  18. Yep... East of the Mississippi for me.
  19. I've used Duplicolor's clear acrylic laquer over Tamiya Coral Blue with no problems at all. I haven't tried it over Testors One Coat paints.
