Try and stay on topic. The subject is Cheap Craft Paints not acrylics. I don't use or like either. I use TODAY's PAINTS, I use House Of Kolor CadillacPat -
Cheap craft paints
CadillacPat replied to hooterville75's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Okay, since Holding, Futurebat, James, Hooter won't post their pics, or dont have any, I'll post some of mine shot 13 years ago with CHEAP CRAFT PAINTs like Apple Barrel and FolkArt, more or less paste in a bottle. There it is from about 13 years ago. It wasn't just the finished texture of these CHEAP CRAFT PAINTS like Apple Barrel and Folk Art that I knew could be better, but the nightmare of proper thinning and the added dificulty of cleaning up afterwards of waterbased paints, Give me solvents anytime. So, then, I moved up to the dollar aerosols at Walmart to use in my AirBrush. The first thing I noticed was the user friendliness of Enamels and Lacquers and that the finished paintjob could be just as inexpensive as CHEAP CRAFT PAINTS. Plus solvent cleanup is so much easier and thorough. So, then, I used better Testors, ModelMaster and Tamiya. Again, improved results and stll just as cheap through my AirBrush as CHEAP CRAFT PAINTS. Then I discovered House Of Kolor and since no one in the HotWheels DieCast Customizing world had ever spoken of it I decided to give it a try. I already had my setup so House Of Kolor was really no more expensive than anything else, My final paint cost on a car is about a Buck. I formed an online House Of Kolor Co-Op and 12 of us divided up an $1100 order from Coast AirBrush. That's the American way, when you run into a problem you find a way to solve it. We all got to try HOK and to this day all 11 of the other guys use it. So, After trying all those paints and discovering that House Of Kolor is no more expensive, and sometimes even less, than other types of paint, I have a pretty good grasp from experience. I've shown that there are several just as frugal coices for paint choices than CHEAP CRAFT PAINTS -

So you are calling me the Master of House of Kolor------------Okay!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too freakin funny! Pat you started your last post with "Jesus, another ambush reply!". "ANOTHER...ambush reply". Why do you think that is Pat? Do you suppose it could be the arrogant, condescending way you talk to people? Your use of bold red I'M MAKING MY POINT AND YOU HAD BETTER LISTEN typeface? Or maybe it's the way you talk down to people? I'm not really sure. What I am sure of is that yes, there are acrylic paints out there that need heat set, but apple barrel and ceramcoat do not need to be heat set when used on a model kit. I should do my research? Trust me sweets, I have! For many many years now. If you want to be part of a discussion, ANY discussion you should stow the attitude and speak to people in a general, even and friendly way, and you won't have to make statements anymore like the one I quoted at the beginning of this post. Have a nice day. I've been posting here for quite some time, participating with many here, and I can't remember ever seeing you around. Arrogant and condescending??????. Well it's good to know we can call people that here. Okay, let's all walk on eggshells so as not to offend anyone with honest, useful info gained from years of experience. Heck, who wants that????? quote] If you don't like someone's posts then don't read them Holding, I suggest you refrain from thinking about me. CadillacPat -

Mangum, please don't try to explain your being incorrect as a "misspeak". That term is being way overused these days, CadillacPat -
Cheap craft paints
CadillacPat replied to hooterville75's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Yeah Harry I've used them for interiors also, and I have painted bodies with them also, that's the reason I upgraded, but, there is no reason anyone has to use them for a body. Too many cheaper and more efficient alternatives, as I've already said, are available. It doesn't take a lot to paint a Model. CadillacPat -

You'll also find on those same sites that no one recommends AirBrushing a Model with CHEAP CRAFT PAINT. Try to stay on topic. You keep switching between Acrylic and CHEAP CRAFT PAINT CadillacPat -

James, that is good clear information. Who is the author of this copy and paste???????????????? CadillacPat -

CadillacPat replied to hooterville75's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
James, Very clearly, top AirBrushers do not use the 50 cent AppleBarrel and FolkArt paints that the guy was asking about. Those paints are used on textiles like T-Shirts and if the guy is not heat setting that stuff it is going to run all over everything the first time it gets wet. Remember, the phrase, "cheap craft paints" from the initial post? James, Top AirBrushers are using the best of Water Based and Water Borne paints, NOT cheap craft paints. CadillacPat -

BG it looks like you have a good strong fan so that's great. I mentioned that I like to have my fans centrally located (in the middle of the back and in the middle of the base) just to catch the maximum overspray from my AirBrush. It's good that you know the fumes are all being extracted quickly but you don't want the tiny particles of overspray to linger around your wet paint. I have looked at the pics you provided and I would place 4" wide strips (1/4" thick) on the top and bottom face and 2" wide strips on the front sides. these baffles will help direct and focus incoming air to the center of the Booth. It will increase draw from the fan. CadillacPat -
Spray Booth Fan
CadillacPat replied to hooterville75's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I don't use a filter and don't advise using one, as I have stated in many of those earlier mentioned discussions on Paint Booths.. Forget about the pegboard, it's mostly board and very little peg (holes). CadillacPat -

Hooter you're new so I can see why you did not get the gist of my reply, I've answered your question online since 2004 on AirBrush sites, Customizing sites, DieCast sites and here. I've not only detailed the methods I use to make my TableTop Paint Booths but also posted pics. It always ends up the same way here about this subject, Some Hobbyists take the info and use it, Some, while having no experience in even trying to build these units, scream the Sky Is Falling and will recite horror stories of Homemade Paint booths exploding and consuming entire towns, mostly from 2nd and 3rd hand rumors. Some copy and paste adages from Wikipedia or elsewhere that really impart nothing useful. So Hooter I wan't making light of your request for info, I've answered the same question many times. It's good that people actually want to improve their AirBrushing and their projects by adding tools like this to their shop. I began showing my TableTop Paint Booths and CadillacPat Ovens at DieCast Conventions years ago and many serious DieCast Customizers have built their's from the specs I offer. Look through some of my posts in Tutorials and I think you'll find some pics of my pieces. Oh, Discard the idea of laying pegboard over your fans. If you have to put anything over the fan or fans, thinking you will trap overspray, just lay a piece of screen. Pegboard will defeat the whole purpose of air flow. Good luck, CadillacPat I just answered this question a few days ago so I thought I would sit back and let it ride for awhile. -

Okay, here we go---------------------------- Good Luck Hooterville, This gets discussed quite often and there's a recent thread within the last page or two. CadillacPat -
Yeah Monty, I'm the guy you are referring to. Those cheap craft paints, i.e., AppleBarrel, FolkArt, Joann, cheap Createx, etc. are actually used by people to paint T-shirts and are set with an iron. Better, much better acrylics, such as Hobby brands may cure differently but why take a chance. Use the same steps you take for a multi layered two-tone acrylic job as using any other type of paint. Proper Body Prep, Adhesion Promoter for plastics, proper easy release tapes, proper spraying techniques, proper mixing, all come into play. 13 years ago I went straight from removing paint from Aerosol cans for my AirBrush, to using nothing but House Of Kolor. I've never liked using any kind of Acrylics or waterbased paint. CadillacPat

Automotive aesthetics - what speaks to you?

Cheap craft paints
CadillacPat replied to hooterville75's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Sure you can use those cheap craft paints through your AirBrush, when thinned properly. But, What have you gained by saving a few pennies, really, a few pennies. The pigment size of cheap acrylic paints is not designed for a smooth, consistent paint job, automotive style. Paint jobs, complete paintjobs, at our scale sizes are not expensive to lay down. Don't go for the cheapest way possible. Mangum has suggested using Clearcoats in between colorcoats of those cheap acrylics. I've never heard of anyone doing that and have no idea why anyone would. Acrylics are meant to be heat set with a blow dryer. CadillacPat -
Paint Booth Venting
CadillacPat replied to FASTBACK340's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
At the moment you are only pushing 84 cfm (per your 3 cubic meters per minute) and that's not much for a Paint Booth. Sure, add the squirrel cage fan and if you must, cram some Aquarium Filter Floss in the ductwork. But, inserting that Floss and then removing it when it is dirty is sure going to be messy. I dont like lint, hairs, dust, or microscopic strings of fiberglass anywhere near my paint area. My homemade tabletop Paint Booth is pushing 240 cfm and I would not consider building anything with less power. CadillacPat -
Co2 gas as propellant for airbrush
CadillacPat replied to Paul Bunyan's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Of course you can use a tank of CO2 for your airbrush. All you will need is a Pressure Regulator. Just Search or Google any AirBrush Sites and you'll see this subject discussed. Some people use Scuba tanks to hold their propellant. CadillacPat -
Paint Booth Venting
CadillacPat replied to FASTBACK340's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you are AirBrushing correctly, overspray is minimal. Even water based and waterborne paints contain harmful vapors, my automotive brands certainly require proper outside venting of paint fumes. These are not misconceptions. Scalenut, you say you don't need a large fan, but just how are you venting the air, or are you sitting in the closet with all those fumes. Power is the key to pulling air through a Paint Booth and the more the better. CadillacPat -
