3-D Printing is now affordable
CadillacPat replied to Darren B's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thank you Casey, Harry I understand youir anxiousness, What I don't underxstand is why my responses are not read and understood clearly. I am glad you have agreed with me that it may be "coming" and that you finally admitted it could take a decade. That is 10 years. But, all this talk about it being here and ready to put on top of our desks and replace what we have used for 75 years is ludicrous. Office Depot where I get all my printers does not have anything that will print out Models. I've never heard of anyone in Houston having one at home on their desk. I haven't addressed anything by Martinfan for some time for obvious reasons. I've been told to just ignore him. I don't need or care about extra post counts. Tell you what Harry, I can see this whole 3D thing is very emotional for you, your own personal crusade, and being as overtly passionate about it as you are may mean you are also passionate for other aspects of the Hobby. Hopefully. So, you can have all and any future threads about supposed 3D Printing. It's all conjecture anyway. No one here is posting pics of the complete Models with all their parts, that they have printed on a 3D Printer. I don't care about one obscure person printing out distributor caps or tiny non essential pieces where durability and precision does not matter. What I do find backwards is, this is a Forum. I have seen 25 DieCast Customizing Forums crumble and vanish from cliques only allowing viewpoints ffrom a selective group of favorite Members. I see the same thing on several other Model Forums. Nobody else who disagreed with this subject was attacked or even replied to, just me. I did not try to steal anyone's thunder, just present a realistic point of view. Remember, change means being able to accept another person's viewpoint. Change just for the sake of change is meaningless and does not necessarily make things better. If Barbara Eden (Genie for those who don'[t know) pops out of the bottle tomorrow morning and has a magic Printer it will still only be interesting to a small percentage of those who build Models. 3-D Printing is now affordable
CadillacPat replied to Darren B's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To Harry, No, you are wrong and apparently cannot accept it. On one hand you say the tech is here and then you come back and say it is coming. Which is it? I gave a perfectly good, honest and logical response and got attacked for it/ Perhaps there should have been a disclaimer saying," Only responses that agree will be accepted, no disagreements allowed, ever" One sided discussions are just that, one sided and no discussion at all. If this technology is here then where is it? Are you printing out Models? Just because billion dollar companies have these machines does not mean that Modelers are using them with perfect success. I won't waste time making allusions to peoples age as I have seen with other interruptions of the topic. That is a pretty weak comeback. I have seen more change in the world than most here, so I can accurately gauge and see that this change is not here yet. It is laughable that a few refuse to accept that they may be wrong. Did you think I meant to hurt your feelings with the obvious truth? Now go ahead and do some more of that La La thing because only input from one side of this discussion will be allowed. Attacking people for clear information brings this board down to the level of that goofy Lazy Barn Door guy that used to be here. But, it seems that attacking me is easier than accepting reality, or at the very least, agreeing that I make valid points. By your assumption there should be dozens of links to Modelers that are printing and selling 3D created Models. So where ae they? I will disreagrd the silly side swipes that have interrupted the flow of this topic. CadillacPat -
3-D Printing is now affordable
CadillacPat replied to Darren B's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Okay, So let's say magically these 3D Printers become available tomorrow morning for $100 that "will" print out acceptable , albeit in sections, bodies. And let's say this can all be done with the press of one single button. Since it is apparent that any degree of difficulty will dramatically affect acceptability, purchase and use. Then you still have to send out to someone for Decals and someone else for Chrome plate. So how is this going to superimpose itself over the world of Model Kits and make their 75 years of manufacturing disappear? Like the Jetsons it is nice to dream about, but look around, there are still not any of the flying cars they promised we would all have parked in our driveway. Even with all the spoken magic shazzam Star Trek potential, maybe one tenth of 1% of Modelers out there will attempt this. I teach people how to design, create, print and apply their own Custom Decals but only a fraction take the initiative to attempt it and only a fraction of those correctly can and do follow directions to do it successfully. Some may try this promised futuristic technique,, again on this proposed availability of a working machine, but 99.99% will look around and see the millions of Model Kits easily available for their enjoyment. We are talking about 2 kinds of Artist or Modeler here. Those who just want to enjoy a Build, and someone who is more interested in creating many many pieces from powdered plastic. There is a high degree of personal satisfaction from being a "one man show" in any artistic endeavor, but it takes lots of effort and know how. It is a totally different aspect of any Hobby undertaken by one tenth of one percent, at best. I myself prefer hands on in all aspects of DieCast Customizing and would rather do it all because I don't know anyone who would go to the lengths that I do, except for one well know ScaleMaster, but in this case injection molding is dependable, accurate, and easily available. Take it home, open the box and have a good time. CadillacPat -

House of Kolor Kandy kits questions
CadillacPat replied to dmk's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Dave, Urethane Clear will make your jobs shine with depth. There is nothing to mixing and applying it, and nothing to cleaning ujp your gun. Very simple steps if followed will result in beautiful finishes. And, it's not expensive either. Like anything, just jump in and learn. CadillacPat -
House of Kolor Kandy kits questions
CadillacPat replied to dmk's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I would never buy anything pre blended. You have no idea how long that has been mixed and on the shelf. Coast AirBrush are the ONLY people authorized by House Of Kolor to repour their paints into smaller amounts. You don't know what TCP Global (and you might want to read what people think about them) means by "standards". InterCoat Clear (SG100) is something you do not want to be repeatedly opening and exposing to the air. It is also not meant to be applied in more than 2 or 3 coats as it is not designed for durability or buildup. Yes you must ClearCoat but any Urethane Clear will work. It is always best however to stick to the HOK system. You should read the House Of Kolor Tech Sheet for the real info on using Candies, KK's and Clearcoat. I suggest buying real HOK and mixing it yourself, to the actual standards and ratios HOK suggests. Here is an alternate Valspar (HOK parent company) Urethane Clearcoat I have been recommending to people for years that don't want to shell out for HOK Clear. And the Catalyst and Reducer, all of which can be purchased in pints and quarts, CadillacPat -
Hmmmmmm, are you sure this is not the bulky undrivable Michael Keaton 1989 Batmobile??? Sure looks like this particular design has all those added on unnecessary pieces. I doubt it could even be parked, much less driven safely. Nothing original about this. But it would make a neat plastic model. CadillacPat

Why do people do these things?
CadillacPat replied to mnwildpunk's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Are you kidding? The answer is obvious, you have accrued more possessions than you should rightfully have. Success to any degree is the Devil. The thieves are merely trying to redistribute what should have been theirs' in the first place. You owed those cars to the thieves. 2 cars in storage, oh my god how UnEuropean, how UnGlobalOrder, how UnNew American, how UnSocialistic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you had only rightfully been taxed more in the first place, you never would have had them. What?? You say you were raised by caring loving parents and to do something like this would never even occur to you? Sucker-r-r-r-rr!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was the America of reason and compassion. The America where people had kids because they wanted them. A long gone era. Your parents obviously also had too much time on their hands not to completely ignore the responsibility of having, caring, loving and raising you. It is all your fault, maybe even your parents fault, not that of the thieves. Why is it that the criminals who commit this type of crime do not conveniently shoot themselves???? Where is the National Public Outrage?? Maybe we should ban Public Storage Units. Certainly this would stem the flow of crime and protect us all. CadillacPat -
The Corvette is THE American SportsCar. Always has been. For that reason alone many who have never even sat in one will say they hate it. It's just like so-called organized sports, I think they are all a joke but people still fill the stadiums. Owning a Corvette allows you to view the rest of the world in the rear view mirror, even if it's sitting still. CadillacPat

"Jenna Jameson Movie Premier and SuperBowl Customs " Back in 2005 I had only been online for a few months when I got a call from Jenna Jameson wanting me to make Custom DieCast for a Movie Premier and also for her upcoming 2006 SuperBowl Party in Detroit. We talked a couple of times and I first sent her sample cars for her appearance at the AVN Awards Show in Las Vegas. We decided on HotWheels 1959 Cadillacs for the Movie Premier, And Jada 1932 Delivery Sedans and Chevy Silverado Dualley PickUps for her SuperBowl Party in Detroit. Here's the Sedans without the PickUps, PhotoBucket won't allow pics of the Customs I sent to the AVN Awards as they were rather explicit. Heck, they were VERY explicit. The Caddys, like all my stuff, undergo lots of filing to remove flash and slag, and are then sanded with 220 and rubbed down with #3 Steel Wool. Then they are Primered and shot HOK Shimrin White and then SnowWhite Pearl which shines through the Decals as if they are backlit. Here's where things get a little tricky. The long main image on top of the Caddys is laid down over the open rear window of the body shell. When the Decal dries it tightens up flat. Then I come in and shoot in reverse order, the inside of that rear window with the same SnowWhite Pearl then Shimrin White to give the image opacity that matches the roof and trunk portions. It is an innovative way to actually use Decals over open spaces. Upon insertion of the plastic window piece into the painted and decaled body, the Decal is protected from harm. Now for the '32 Delivery Sedans, Matching pairs done as mirror images of each other. They too get well cleaned up, primered and then shot the same Shimrin White and then SnowWhite Pearl. They are then taped and shot their respective HOK Candy Apple Red or Black. Look closely and notice a thin 1/16" border around an even thinner Red outline. I take one of these printed Decals and apply it to a piece of clear Frisket. When dry I use an Xacto knife to scribe down the middle of that thin black border, just barely inside it's outer edge. The result is a decaled piece of Frisket just ever so slightly smaller in diameter than the original Decal. I use the negative portion of the Frisket, with the hole in it, center it on the roof, and crank my gun way down to spray a positive Shimrin White and then SnowWhite Pearl oval. The Decal is laid down over the white oval very precisely. There is no room for error. The Dualley Silverado PickUps are all done similarly with the addition of specially created flames and checks. All cars are ClearCoated with HOK Urethane Clear and a healthy dose of Brilliant Gold Pearl Powder. Here's some of the Caddys stripped and ready to paint, Drying in one of my large Ovens, Mounted in Crystal Cases and ready to ship, And the more involved SuperBowl 2006 Party Customs, (Scroll down for remainder of post)

You mean you are Rattlecanning and you don't have an airbrush? Is that why you can't mix the Pearl Powder into your clear? CadillacPat

Do you Clear coat --after or before-- DECALS?
CadillacPat replied to adabiri2's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you lay your paint down smooth and correctly your Decals will apply and adhere correctly without any silvering. If you Clear before you lay down Decals they will appear to float above the surface of the paint. CadillacPat -
Tape residue removal ?
CadillacPat replied to Bartster's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Bart, no reason to clearcoat between colors. You're creating a problem by doing that in adition to losing body detail and definition. Paint is made to stick to other paint, not clearcoat unless you scuff or sand. Clearcoat is the final step. Intercoat Clear is used if your plan to stop and wait more than 12 hrs before continuing with paint. Laying your paint down smooth and wet along with using good tape, Tamiya, is all you need to do. Thanks Gray, Keep your eyes peeled for more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CadillacPat

Tape residue removal ?
CadillacPat replied to Bartster's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've used Tartan, did you leave the tape on too long? It's never given me a problem. What kind of paint did you use? I'd try alcohol but not Goo Gone and I would never use q-tips or cotton on a paint job. CadillacPat -
