A Dodge & a Nissan? Magnissimo? R34 Magnum? Am I nuts?!
Zoom Zoom replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in WIP: Model Cars
No problemo; I'll figure out the Euro-spec 300C SRT-8 Touring conversion and do that too someday. Hopefully Revell's front end (Uptown series 300C SRT-8) will be a better fit than AMT's. -
A Dodge & a Nissan? Magnissimo? R34 Magnum? Am I nuts?!
Zoom Zoom replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I can't believe I've only gotten one negative comment about it so far on A/F, and that's from a Magnum fan who likes the Magnum look better. Heck, I'm almost upset  My Magnum kit wheels/tires are being donated to my Revell Uptown (with those giant rims they ought to be called "Upclown" ) Charger SRT-8. -
amt 2007 dodge challenger???!!!!
Zoom Zoom replied to dirty_j's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Only time will tell. AMT will probably end up in more capable hands than RC2 eventually, so if it is tooled up this year it'll probably be a decent kit and live on. Probably, being the key word. I think it's a wise tooling investment regardless of AMT's post-2007 scenario. I think they're just looking for a buyer, and getting people to buy their stuff now via their announcement to keep the product moving. Classic "get it now, it'll be gone soon" sales tactic. If AMT doesn't do the Challenger I'd practically guarantee Revell would. -
The answer is yes if you already didn't know I never intended to build the Revell Magnum OOB; I'm not in love w/the truck-like Magnum front end (which Dodge is fixing for '08 very nicely) and my kit was missing one headlight bezel (but hey, it had three taillight bezels  ). I was going to do a front-clip conversion w/a Chrysler 300 to do a 300C SRT-8 Touring that the Europeans get (but we don't  ). The AMT front clip is too wide for an easy conversion, so I set out to find another idea. Then this hit me as I have an extra Skyline. The parts fit pretty well w/o major modification. They're both high-performance beasts. So let the party begin. New front clip already added. I'm also going to use the Skyline aero bits, taillights, wheels, RHD dash and front seats. Paint will be silver w/Nismo stripes, black wheels. I'm almost surprised that it hasn't touched off WWIII on Automotive Forums where Skylines are treated like the crown jewels The SRT-8 Hemi gets the respect it deserves worldwide I would give my left ventricle  to own/drive one of these in 1:1.

1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landaulet - Trumpeter Kit
Zoom Zoom replied to PeterLepold's topic in Model Cars
Beautiful finish for such a bad model of an ugly car The combo w/the boat is magnificent. Sure wish Trumpeter had done a '78 Grand Am coupe instead, like the one I used to own. It looked 20,000 times better than a Monte Barfo  Funny how over the years I've become so familiar w/cars like this, they don't look nearly as ugly now as they did when they were new. -
Who here uses PPG automotive clear on their models?
Zoom Zoom replied to Matt T.'s topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Using an airbrush isn't going to save you from polishing; I get as-good or usually smoother results straight from a Tamiya rattlecan than any airbrushed clear. I know some of the guys use touchup guns and urethane clears and they come out really smooth, but often I find those clearcoats to be a bit too thick and I often see them fill up fine panel lines. 3-4 paintjobs a year isn't much polishing time; get a good coat of rattlecan Tamiya clear in place and you can hit it w/3600-6000 grit then compound and often it only takes 15-30 minutes to polish...much longer if there are a lot of parts to polish out or if it's a dark color. If you do get a gun/airbrush for clear, it's a good idea as you won't get cross-contamination with other paints you might shoot through the gun, even the tiniest of specs of paint residue will undoubtely end up on your finished clear. -
Is this true..Ricky Couch very ill??
Zoom Zoom replied to Tom Kren's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sadly Ricky passed away earlier today  . More information as it comes. Today has been an awful day for the modeling community, first Al Superczinski, and now Ricky Couch. If my schedule allows I'm going to try to get back up to Greenville for his funeral, even though I just got back from there yesterday afternoon. -
Great graphics for a milk truck

Do yu want to play a game?
Zoom Zoom replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Take a close look at the hubcaps...the logo is unmistakable  Maybe it's a Phantom Menace  -
Chrome+ does great work! Best aftermarket chrome I've experienced. However I rarely have a need to get anything near a whole tree of chrome done anymore, and can't plan ahead much because I'm constantly building what I just bought. That's why Spazstix and Alclad II are good for me-they're instant gratification. I've heard that Tamiya AS-12 spray has a similar appearance, I'm going to grab a can of it to find out if it does look as good.

Nice work! The new photos help a lot 8)

Testors Charger Police car
Zoom Zoom replied to crispy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sounds good. I'm building a Charger Daytona at the moment. Nice kit for the most part, incredible detail that rivals a Fujimi Enthusiast kit. Looking forward to the police cruiser; I've now seen fully marked Georgia and South Carolina Charger cruisers. They make Crown Vics look about as hip as Model T's -
Aw ######. I always hated this model because it wasn't stock. Now I see this, and I have to have one too. It's gorgeous. It's all your fault

The definition of a good day. Finished a project, did errands on this warm January day w/the top down, and got my Cayman and 512BB 8) They're pretty nice. Fujimi's definitely upping their game; the only weird things about the Cayman are a red body but the rear spoiler, side gills, and mirrors are black  The rest looks great. I'm planning to customize it a bit. The 512BB is amazingly good. Great engraving, nice parts breakdown and detail w/o going too far overboard; 126 pieces. The only weird thing are the tires in my kit seemed tiny; they're really nice vintage Pirellis but I had to stretch the living **** out of them to go over the wheels. They look fine, but I hope they don't end up splitting. Weird...makes me wonder if I got 365 tires that may be smaller?? This is THE Ferrari Boxer kit. All previous efforts are rendered obsolete by a huge margin

06 Mustang Rolls out of Detail Downunder!!
Zoom Zoom replied to paul@detaildownunder's topic in Model Cars
Cool model; nice use of wheels, color and graphics and the RHD conversion is a great idea 8) -
My Fujimi 512 BB and Porsche Caymans arrived yesterday from Hobbylink Japan; I'll pick them up @ a friend's later today 8) The 512 BB was out right after Christmas in Japan. The 599 GTB is due later this month.

Slooooooooooww site!
Zoom Zoom replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It seems all better now; earlier it was sloooooooow (intermittently for a few days), then one time it wouldn't open at all today, and then it was fixed 8) -
I was around when the original '93-ish Fleetwood limousine was mastered for Art/AAM by David Crowe of Atlanta, using a bright lime green Caprice test shot that was supplied by Art. I did the seat pattern (a bit crude) using epoxy putty. Dave did a great job on the limousine; and Lee Baker then took the limousine and made the Fleetwood sedan from it. I have one in my stash, it's a neat kit that I'll have great fun with some day; still want to make it like a Fleetwood STS-V or something like that 8) Someone is repopping the Fleetwood somewhere, I've seen a few on Feebay. Popular subject w/the lowrider scene.

Old truck build - Unimog 401S
Zoom Zoom replied to carsntrucks4you's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Great model, and by it's familiarity I think I looked at it back in Birmingham when you showed it. All the details work so well, you can stare at a model like this for a long time and keep finding more treasures 8) -
Your options are very limited; most aftermarket wheels are designed with the polycap in the wheel, with the axle portion part of the model, vs. the Tamiya method w/the axle pin on the wheel. I don't think anyone has a list either. XS Tuning's wheels would work, but they seem to have mostly vanished from the face of the planet. Other than getting another Tamiya kit, I'd suggest learning how to modify other wheels to fit. Once you've done it once, it's not a big issue. Half thet time I have to do surgery on the mounting (even using stock wheels) because the ride height is off. Just look at a Tamiya rim and how it fits the hub, and look at how to make a pin fit the hub, and fit into the polycap of the aftermarket wheel. Due to that area being basically invisible when the kit is assembled, you can be pretty crude with the actual gluing of the wheel to the model. Study, measure, be relaxed, have Dremel and glue, and you can make any basic wheel fit any basic model  Another hint: whatever wheel you use, attach the brake directly to the wheel. Then attach the wheel/brake assembly to the model. Set the model on "jack stands"; could be business cards, so that the wheels slip into place exactly where you want them to, exactly at the ride height. Then glue the assemblies to the model after making sure everything fits (you might have to do a snip, cut, or add a spacer). The car will then have the right look, both in custom rim and ride height. Again, I learned this a few years back and it makes a world of difference without being constrained by what the mfg's. give us.

Great work, very realistic 8)
