Put Up or Shut UP !
ramonesblues replied to Reliable Resin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used to use a hot knife a lot. Thats part of why I'm divorced. Used the ex's butter knives. They all had burned tips and coated with plastic. -
This depends whether you are going to wet sand and polish your paint job.I would follow the three mist coats with at least two, preferably three medium wet coats.Mist coats don't give you very much coverage and I would'nt want to have insufficient material to sand and polish. With two to three wet coats you are more assured you won't cut through the clear when you polish it.This in only my personal preference, but there is nothing more disheartening than burning through a candy or pearl paint job.Better safe than sorry.

tweety pie
ramonesblues replied to ramonesblues's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You're right, Bill. Roth bought it, gave it a shave and a haircut and made it famous. Such is the power of celebrity. It also helps to have the eye of an artist. -
I just read that Roths Tweety Pie just sold for $325,000.Imagine owning one of the icons of hot rodding.

'84 Monte Carlo color code?
ramonesblues replied to larrygre's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The wa designation denoted water based paints. Code 22 and 27 were the worst colors for peeling and i repainted at least a thousand of those cars. I used to keep the colors in stock at least a gallon at a time.In '84, waterborne paints were garbage. -
What do you drive?
ramonesblues replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Since my old '57 chebby isn't running yet, my ride is my '59 ford pickemup, and my '91 evo Sportster.during spring, summer and fall, my bike is my main transportation. -
Another source for interior color reference sources is your local auto paint stores. They all have color chip books with interior color chips. They may even mix small amounts for you as they can mix1/10 if a pint.

Does anyone have any knowledge of Drag City Castings as far as quality and service?. They have some pretty neat stuff, but I have never heard anything about them.

What Model Year is this car?
ramonesblues replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The bumpers look like the '79 I have in the back yard. -
Correct. Sam Barris chopped the top before Buster Litton owned the car. Cerny finished the rest of the car.

The first model I ever built was a P47D. I was 6 yrs old(54 yrs ago). It didn't look anything like yours!. Hopefully my skills have improved a little bit since then.

that is a super nice replica of one of George Cerney' early customs.Cerney was not as well known as the the Barris brothers and their contemporaries, but was a superb metal man.

Using Testors Glosscoat as a sealer
ramonesblues replied to falcongeorge's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
They don't call Vari-prime green death for nothing. its excellent for ground coating metal as a rust preventative, but the risks are not worth it just for models, imho.Plus, its incredibly expensive. -

I met Ed Roth at the San Mateo car show, around '62 when he first showed the Beatnik Bandit. I was standing there talking to him while he airbrushed a tee shirt, when a friend of mine came up and ran his hand over the back of the Bandit. Roth literally leaped over the table and on a dead run, kicked my friend square in the butt, lifting him a good foot and a half off the ground. I will remember that day 'till i die.

Using Testors Glosscoat as a sealer
ramonesblues replied to falcongeorge's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Zeb, that is the most comprehensive analysis on shellac I have ever seen. Bravo Sir! In the old days we used to spray Endo shellac on synthetic enamel as a bleeder sealer,i.e. white over red.Worked great. Not sure how long they lasted, as they were usually economy paint jobs. -

I found a local Auto Zone that had a whole rack of Duplicolor lacquer, with Candies and pearl with a chameleon paint. The local auto paint store had a Duplicolor chameleon paint kit with base, color, and clear for $15
