79 Nova Wheelbase
Ace-Garageguy replied to Perspect Scale Modelworks's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The real car's wheelbase is 111 inches. Divide by 25, as the MPC kit is 1/25 scale. Therefore the actual wheelbase of the kit should be 4.44 inches. -
Years seem to pass more quickly the closer I get to the end, which doesn't seem fair at all.

Autoquiz #651 - Finshed

Well, I thunk wrong and then impatiently did a reverse image search, so I'm out. -
What non-auto model did you get today?

I cleared some message space. -
Thanks again for your interest and comments. Just one point I wanted to make after re-reading this: though difficult to fit and with adjacent panels of varying thicknesses that makes it even harder, the kit body shape is quite good for the supercharged version it represents, which is the version that clocked 406.6 at Bonneville in 1960. To further clarify, the bare metal body as first shown to the press was considerably different in a lot of areas, most noticeable being the absence of the scoops for the superchargers. The nose, tail, and fender contours were also quite different at that time, and that first version is what my model represents. The un-supercharged version was painted light blue and run on the salt, but didn't have the speed to set a new record. It went back to the shop where it got superchargers and a revised body intended to reduce drag...which increased dramatically with the addition of the superchargers sticking up in the air stream. The model is currently back on the bench, as the finish has deteriorated somewhat from being uncovered for years, and I'm looking at what it'll take to bring it back before I pull molds from it. My plan was always to eventually make molds so I could make a set of almost-scale-thickness fiberglass skins (actually closer to .35" scale thickness, but a lot thinner than kit parts), which will in turn require a new method for mounting the body to the frame.

Another HO train score, a decent size box of structure kits, freight car kits, some scenery material, and a couple of nicely weathered built-up freight cars with metal wheels, sprung trucks, and Kadees. Just the NIB Bar Mills Staton Marine kit and the 3-fer Accurail gondola kit would have set me back considerably more on feePay than I paid for the whole mess. Looking forward to a pleasant evening of opening all the boxes and looking at the contents. -
Appear and disappear is SOP for the Cheshire Cat and most other felines I've known.

Nowhere, man; that jive cat is like nowhere in the overall scheme of things.

Autoquiz #650 - cancelled

I know what it is, but it looks like an NSU Prinz 4 and a Citroen DS had a little nipper... -
That was my reaction. Only caveat: I've found that some colors seem to be more susceptible to fisheyes from mild surface contamination than materials I've used that have hotter solvents. 70% isopropyl cleaning prior to shooting alleviates the tendency.

how important is the fit?

I'm more anal than that. Pretty much everything I build is something I'd like to build in 1:1 if I win the lottery and live forever, so, having driven a lot of rods and race cars that are really really uncomfortable, I get kinda crazy fitting people into my models. -

As far as I'm concerned, absolutely. I've been using a seated 1/24 driver figure (from the ancient Monogram Indy car kit) named Lefty (because he lost his right arm at one point...but I found it) for years to keep me honest. Being 1/24, he works as an average sized driver in that scale, and a big guy in 1/25. Depending on the build, I'll rearrange his arms and legs and feet and seating angle. -
Awhile and a while are often confused, but they don't mean the same thing.

Just because a guy doesn't hammer you into the ground the first time you cross him, that's no guarantee that you can walk all over him with impunity indefinitely. -
Expensive (and not so expensive) real estate developments near racing venues and small airports have ended most dragstrips, airstrips, and circle tracks in my area over the last decade or two.
